Tom Wysom asked for a few more pictures of an old project. It started out as an EJ Hobbies 1/32 Indy Offy kit but I couldn't leave well enough alone...

...so I built a chassis out of a few bits of 1/8"ID brass tubing, .055" piano wire and .063" thick brass strips. It's pretty narrow in the business end so there is no rear bracket (nor bushings) and the motor is soldered directly to the chassis rails. Note that the gears are set in a hypoid configuration...

...and there is a pivoting drop arm with little bits of S-shaped .032" piano wire as drop arm down stops and up stops...U-shaped piece of .032" piano wire utilized as cross braces and reinforcement behind the front 1/16"OD pin tubing body mount...

...and plumber hinges (see below) which are a fancy name for those combination body mount/hinged rails that pivot up near the front of the drop arm. question.gif Note the notches ground into the piece of 1/16" brass strip that the guide flag is mounted to. It give you a little more "meat" to solder those small chunks of 3/32" tube that form the plumber hinges. The .055" piano wire is a sloppy fit in those tubes...but that's good! thumbsup.gif

One little hint when dealing with constructing piano wire and brass tube hinges...seal the openings with Liquid Paper or any typewriter correction fluid. It's heat proof and helps to keep the corrosive flux fumes and solder from invading the hinges. It washes out with acetone or lacquer thinner. I also use it to temporarily "glue" those fiddly little down stops and up stops during soldering! thumbsup.gif

This chassis design is based on 1/32 scale MESAC F1 and Formula 5000 slot cars that raced in 1969.

cheers,

Bob

Brilliant! I was wondering if you had forgotten and I didn't want to bug you about it. I'm going to have a go at it. Thanks!
