In an attempt to share with others a "scratch-builders' resource" I am working towards developing an online reference index of the various articles within each issue of a number of vintage automobile magazines i have collected over the past decade.
I will be developing a category within my blog labeled "Vintage Racing Resource" - a temporary destination where, along with this reference index, original photos, magazine articles and newspaper coverage related to historic motor racing and classic automobilia will periodically be posted. The content within these posts is meant solely for personal reference / interest and is not to be used for any means of commercial gain or profit. If any material posted herein infringes upon a rightful party's copyright please contact us and said content will be removed immediately. Hopefully this will allow others to track down information on a particular car or race which they may have interest in or are attempting to model (or simply provide a few minutes of enjoyment browsing through some fantastic old cover images and articles!). (in progress - patience please!) a bit about myself
Hi all - i am an architect residing and working in Vancouver BC Canada. Here is a little blurb about my interests and how i became re-aquainted with slot cars.
Although born in 1971 just after the glory days of slot car racing some of my fondest memories are of racing tycopro / afx ho cars with my father and brother in the mid '70's. About 8 years ago i discovered vintage slot cars - this time in 1/32 scale. I was looking to find a momento for my brother - a '68 charger rt for him to display on his tv set (he had just purchased a fully restored 1:1 vesrion from Salt Lake City - a real beauty!). At any rate, as this was well before the large die cast model craze the only '68 charger models were the odd hot wheels or matchbox diecasts, or old plastic model kits. Then i found an eldon slot car - a white dodge charger (1/35?) ... and ever since i have casually been collecting vintage slot cars and accesories (mostly in 1/32) - a great hobby to focus on when work gets to be too much! My interest in the history of slot cars - models / makes and manufacturers has grown in parallel with my passion for vintage automobiles and racing. When i first moved to Vancouver BC from southern Manitoba I was fortunate to have stumbled across a great local automobilia store. I quickly became a regular and got to know the owners very well. In the early years the store proved a treasure trove of vintage motorsport literature which i couldn't get enough of - and before i knew it i had amassed a fairly serious collection of automobilia literature - which i continue to read and re-read. Most recently i have also become quite interested in the 'scratch build' game. This forum has been a wonderful resource for learning about frame and body building techniques. As time permits i look forward to trying my hand at creating some of my favourite cars that currently aren't available. At any rate - thanks for taking a few minutes to read my ramble - as time permits i look forward to sharing some of my interests / collections / projects with others through this blog - as i have mentioned to a few of this forums members before - the genuine comaradarie and spirit of sharing within the hobby is very impressive! ![]() OK - technically not a slot car - but 1/32 - and one i remember racing against my brother's on a stunt set figure 8 - intersection jump ... hay bales and all! ![]() Mattel did a series of these - based on their 'Sizzlers' - battery powered 1/64 cars that you 'juiced up' by plugging into a power station that looked like a gas pump - the cars had no guide flags and didn't drive in a slot - you just set them down on a wide track with raised edges - to keep them from leaving the road. ![]() ![]() My original one has long since vanished with my first slot cars - likely sold at one the infamous 'garage sales' our father liked to hold - this one caught my eye at the local 'automobilia store' and brought back fond memories. If i ever get my track / diorama up and running the 'Super Steed' will surely have a place to show off his thrilling stunts again! ![]() Cheers, Ron
In the 'about myself' info i mention my first experience with slot cars was circa 1976-1977 (I was six years old). In our basement my dad set up a brand new HO scale TycoPro Nascar Grand National race set!!! I vividly remember the box too... ![]() Countless hours were spent battling my twin brother, dad and friends around that oval (we would get so excited we would run around and over the track - Dad had to resort to holding the high banks together with rubber bands...and made us keep the speed restrictors on the controllers - at first). To this day i am still envious of my brother - somehow his car became the beautiful Petty Roadrunner (not once did he let me drive it) and i got Allison's 'Coke Car' - i recall hating it at the time but pics of it now look so much nicer. Like so many others our collection grew with Tyco Pro / AFX cars and accessories - but our favourites remained these first ones. ![]() ![]() Now remember - around this time - Evel Knievel was larger than life, and movies like Cannon Ball Run ran rampant. A few young boys took care of their toys...but most shared that universal desire to unhook the track, ramp it, soap it and let their cars soar - i can still smell overheating controllers and burning rubber as we performed 'smoke shows' and the like (needless to say our cars were well used and "well loved"). Once we grew a bit older we sold our slot cars for pennies at one of our garage sales (likely to buy air rifles or lawn darts) - fast forward a couple of decades - and surfing ebay i see a clean version of my beloved first set sell for nearly a thousand dollars. This is when i came to realize it was one of the most highly sought after sets amongst HO collectors - being quite rare (my hopes of ever owning another Petty Roadrunner or Coke Car to gaze at are dashed instantly - re-confirmed just recently when the Allison car sold on ebay for $800 US!!). So alas, at least i have pictures to bring back the fondest of memories of countless hours shared with brother and dad - racing and laughing lap after lap (Dad's car was a green tyco Chapparal 2G, with magnets no less - that one couldn't be caught...another i wasn't allowed to drive - unless he wasn't looking of course ![]() Hope this read reminds you of your best slot car memories - i now have a young son and can't wait until i can race with him like my father did with me. |
