entry 21 Mar 2011, 19:41
On Saturday we ran our second race of the season for our points series. For 2011 we race sports and prototypes from the sixties and seventies. It is a very interesting class, as together with the usual suspects, the Slot it racing cars, we match some modified Fly, Sloter and Spirit entries. 16 racers gathered for the event, divided in 4 heats.
The grid for this one was very interesting:

In heat1 we had:

Freddie's Porsche 936, George Zourbanos' Alfa no34, George Kefalonitis' Alfa no54 and Alexis' Racer Ferrari 250LM

Then we had heat2 with:

Vasilis Fillipoglou with a Ferrari 312PB, Christos Fokianos with a Fly Porsche 908, Hercules with the Alfa and Nikos Verganelakis with the Ferrari 312PB

In heat3 there were:

Giannis Fokianos with the orange Ferrari, Vassilis APR with the Alfa, Maria with the Ferrari 312PB and Giaccomo with the Racer Ferrari 312P

And finally in heat4:

Petros raced the Sloter Ferrari 312PB, I raced a Fly Ferrari 512S, Dimitris raced a Fly Porsche 917LH and Kostas had a new Alfa 33.

It was a very fast race with a lot of interesting battles throughout its whole 20min duration. Petros had the lead from the start, Kostas started very fast and was a very close second and Dimitris was not very far behind. I was too nervous, deslotted a lot, even dropped the car from the table at some point, and lost too much time in the first two runs. George Zourbanos was very fast, Maria tried to drive without many mistakes and Giaccomo started a bit cautious with the heavy Racer Ferrari. Vassilis APR was also fast with the Alfa, all of them were within a lap from each other.
Things got a bit more complicated in the process, as Giaccomo accelerated, Maria got a bit tired, George Zourbanos was steady and fast, clocking better times, and Vassilis wore his tires a bit more than he should. Giannis Fokianos was not as fast as in the first race, as he didn't practice much, Christos his brother was a equally fast but a bit more cautious. Nick Verganelakis had some trouble with the tires of his car, as did Hercules, who came back after a long absence due to his marriage and his wife's pregnancy!
In the third run, Petros gained a bit of a gap from Kostas, and I tried much harder, so I passed Dimitris (who faced tire trouble near the end of the run) and closed up on Kostas. Vassilis lost time, but Giaccomo raced flawlessly and climbed one more place. Maria could not accelerate, but still got away from Vassilis and George Zourbanos who had a few offs this time.
In the final run, it was a 'do or die' case for me, which ended up in succes and I narrowly edged Kostas for second place. Kostas was really fast and made very few mistakes, and this meant that I had to try really hard, but I guess I got a bit lucky at some point (or Kostas got a bit unlucky, to put it right). Giaccomo's consistent drive paid off, so he came on fourth place, ahead of many lighter and faster machines. Maria was next and then we had George Zourbanos, a gentleman driver, the top rookie entry for this race (Kostas may also be considered a rookie, as he races his first season, but his performance is so high that we agreed to not consider him a rookie anymore!). In the second family duel, Christos beat his brother Giannis, driving a supposedly slower Fly car, compared to his brother's Slot it Ferrari. Guess Giannis must spend more time driving and less time installing lights in other people's cars!! tongue.gif
