Paul Pettey and Richard Reventlow took six months to turn a showroom Mustang into a full&#8208;fledged Trans Am racer.<br />Not being experts, however, the first tech inspection at the track was a disaster, and the car was not allowed to race. <br /><br />A few months later, however, they were ready to go. The car ended up racing in seven Trans Am Series races in the Midwest and on the East Coast. The best finish was 14th place. The car, now owned by Ken Adams, races in vintage Trans Am races during the summer months. 		<title>SureChange Guides - a review</title>

Many slot car enthusiasts often have several makes or brands of cars in their precious collection. Some will only fit and use the original parts and others are now beginning to look around for generic parts so that they do not need to keep a growing inventory. There can be no doubt that the guide is one of the most important parts of a slot car. So if you can come up with an elegant solution, that encompasses the strength of the good ones whilst removing the weaknesses that can plague a good car, then you can’t be far wrong.<br /><br />Richard Perry of <I><b>Route1Racing</b> </I>kindly sent me some sample guides for review. I received two standard white ones and two of the full-Monty black kits complete with braids and a spare infra-red LED. My viewpoint on slot cars is very much leaning towards the digital side, and I spend a lot of time digitising cars both for myself and others.  <!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->One aspect of digitising a car that can take quite a time and will ruin it if done badly, is the siting of the infra-red LED. It is essential to find a suitable place and drill an accurate hole for it. This must be as near to the guide as you can get so as to diminish the effects of tail drifts which moves the LED further away from the track sensor as the car waggles from side to side. The driver depends on the chip’s ability to activate the various lane changers and pit lanes required in a digital track. Miss a pit stop and your race may end if you run out of fuel, miss the chance to overtake and you can say goodbye to the chequered flag. Track design has been held back somewhat because you could never place a lance changer or pit lane immediately after a turn, an extra piece of track was always need to straighten the cars up for the sensor. On a fast track this might have been a full straight. The downside of this strategy was that you had to reduce the length of the pit lane to compensate as very racers have the luxury of a lot of space.<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><br /><br /><!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->With <b>SureChange</b>, all that is now swept away. These guides locates the LED right at the front of the blade so that you will never miss a sensor again if the car is waggling its tail around the track. The LED will always be able to communicate with the sensors as the signal strength is as high as it can be. The hole is made so that it is a firm interference fit for the LED.<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><br /><br /><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo--><img src="http://www.slotforum.com/forums/uploads/1366838571/gallery_11296_1555_17601.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /><!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><br /><br />  <!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->The guide is also engineered with two small ridges on the topside to prevent the dome of the LED from protruding too far down; these can be removed if you need a greater depth. This thoughtfulness means that you do not need any messy hot glue or finger-sticking super glue neither do you need to find a drill bit or a reamer, all you have to do is gently press down with your nails until the LED is snugly in place. It is so snug that it is impossible to damage the bulb of the LED whilst racing.<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><br /><br /><!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->  <!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Some manufacturers often change the shape of the chassis around the pivot point for the guide. This is a natural progression for a manufacturer as they strive to improve their products. The <b>SureChange</b> guide can cope with that because the guide is made from sintered nylon which allows it to be easily shaped with a craft knife or by sanding. In keeping with this design philosophy, the guide post is deliberately made long so that you can trim to whatever size you need for your car. The design features do not stop there as there is a small hole in the blade to work the steering mechanism as pioneered by <b>Chase Cars</b>.<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><br /><br /><!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->    <!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--><!--fontc--></span><!--/fontc--><!--fonto:Tahoma--><span style="font-family:Tahoma"><!--/fonto--><!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->It is possible to use any types of braid that suits you and your track. The versatility of this new guide allows for two methods of attaching the braids. Some racers like the <b>SCX </b>method of allowing both ends of the braid to be in contact with the track so eliminating the bulkiness of a double fold as used by <b>Scalextric</b>. The more traditional approach of using pins to trap the pickup wires against the braids is also catered for by the addition of two small hoops on the top of the base plate. The motor leads will be left at their original length and an extra Ferrite Man is added to cut down on the spikes produced by the back-EMF from the motor. It fits many different vehicles from several different manufacturers and can be adapted by sanding or re-shaping with a sharp knife. You will never miss a lane-change sensor again and with the infra-red LED so close to the track sensors, maximum efficiency is achieved. The design of the guide allows for two different ways of fitting the braids so you can choose the way that suits you best. Two hobby traders with something that promises to remove some annoying SSD track design constraints.<br />Over the last few months Richard Perry (aka Mr Modifier) from Route1Racing has been working with Gareth Jones (aka Choc-Ice) from Chase-Cars to make a game changing guide for Scalextric SSD digital.<br />Gareth and Richard first worked together when Richard did some work for Gareth moulding tyres for the Chase-Cars “Fall Guy” truck. Richard had this idea to solve a problem with his digital racing but not the <br />3D skills needed to bring it to reality – skills which Gareth has in abundance.  SSD racers all know that a lane changer straight after a curve can be problematic. Racing with magnets it's not so much of a <br />problem but quicker cars with magnets still slide out of corners and miss the sensor.  Richard’s club races all of its classes magless and there are lots of incidents with cars sliding round the corner before the <br />pit lane entrance and missing the sensor; thus entering the pits at full speed. This punts any refuelling cars out of the pits thus ending their refuelling prematurely. Lots of home users have this issue with missing <br />sensors and layouts are constrained by having to have a full straight in front of any lane changer. In a loft or spare bedroom this is an issue that limits where you can put a lane changer and severely restricts <br />your design options.<br /><br />Working entirely through the medium of SlotForum (they have only met once face to face), Gareth and Richard have designed a guide with a retaining ring at the front that accepts the Scalextric SSD LED. By <br />putting the LED on the guide, immediately in front and above the guide blade, you are guaranteed that; whatever your car is doing at the rear, as long as you are in the slot - the LED will hit the sensor. The new <br />guide works every time on a sensor placed immediately after a bend – even an R1 hairpin!  Because tooling for injection moulding is mega expensive (£6k-£8k typically) there was no way this could be produced <br />conventionally. So the guys are 3D printing the guides using sintered nylon which produces a hard wearing guide in small enough volumes to make the project possible.<br /><br />The guide is now robust – prototypes were tested with lots of cars and a few independent SlotForum SSD experts were sent sample guides to try them out. Some changes were suggested and the final product is now <br />ready, tested and working on all sorts of cars. An independent review is due on SlotForum shortly.  The guide has already been shown to work on Scalextric (cars with the classic guide like the C7 Mini, C125 Porsche, <br />C128 BMW, and more modern Ford Taurus and Merc CLK etc.). It is also currently working on modern Ninco1 and Slot.It HRS chassis. Anything that will accept a classic Scalextric guide or a Ninco sprung guide can <br />use this guide. Of course Gareth's Chase-Cars all accept the guide and it even has a hole moulded at the rear of the blade for the steering pin.<br /><br />The guide stem is long enough to be a direct replacement for a Ninco sprung guide and is easily cut down to fit many makes of slot car. The guide is provided with a screw and washer fitting and works well in many <br />slot cars without any modifications required to the car's guide mounting. The guide is available in white and black. This seemed to suggest a niche in the market for a small operation to fit into. The inspiration for the concept was an exciting race and a very close finish to the Italian GP at Monza in 1967 between John Surtees (Honda RA300) and Jack Brabham (BT24 Repco).
