Fly Car Model Alfa Romeo 156 GTA
FIA ETCC 2004 Salvatore Tavano

One of the fantastic new releases by Fly car Model in 2005 is the Alfa Romeo 156 GTA Driven in the European Touring car championship by Salvatore Tavano.

The first time I saw this car was on the latest Fly releases section on the front page of Slot Forum. At first I thought that this car was an ugly brute and obviously had a problem with fashion sense. I dismissed the car as one of the odd ones by Fly and thought no more about it.

That night at the Oxford club I was blown away in my Chrysler Viper by an Alfa Romeo in red, it was obvious that I needed something to compete with this and my Viper was now getting old, time to go shopping. At this point I would just like to thanks the people at Getslotted for the fantastic service I received when purchasing the Alfa, I paid an extra £3.00 or so for a quick delivery and the next day the car was on my doorstep. I have never eagerly awaited a car this much since I bought my favourite car in the form of a Scalextric Ford GT, which shows that there was something special about my latest purchase, and at £37.00 there should be.
Anyway, enough storytelling lets take a good look at the car. The immediately striking colour scheme does exactly what a colour scheme is meant to do and that is catch the eye of the bloke you overtake. In bright yellow, splashes of green, blue bonnet and a big pink smile this car may sound like a car having a mid life crisis but it soon had me wanting to just look at it. The flawless tampo printing definitely comes up to the brilliant standard that we now expect from Fly. Looking inside the cockpit we are again amazed by the standard of the detailing, we can now see where the money went, a detailed fire extinguisher, seatbelts on the front seats, a great dashboard and a nice looking driver figure too. It wan not until I flipped the car being a bit too enthusiastic going around one of Dusty Hill Raceway’s tighter corners I noticed that the Alfa has a very detailed underbelly, Exhausts and tubes all brilliantly done, job well done on the detailing!
Before I took this car to the track I decided to take a look at the supposed “new crown gear” as displayed on the box, and take a look at the guts and innards of the Fly. Unfortunately at this point I did not have my camera on me, but I can assure you that it is the normal Fly set up with the Motor up front providing weight to hold the guide in the slot and a drive shaft running to the rear axle. It comes supplied with a powerful Fly bar magnet which is enough to hold the car to the track but gives you the ability to hang the tail out on corners. While I had the car opened up I decided to do my normal tuning and tweaking techniques to get the Alfa running sweet. These are to glue in all the bushings and run the car at low voltage for about 2 hours, and then give it all a good bit of oil. I also left all the body screws slightly loose which allows body roll in the corners.
So, to the track. Dusty Hill Raceway is 15.5 meters of Scalextric Sport track with varying corners from R1 to R2 with a main straight of seven and a half straights. It’s when you first get the feeling of acceleration with a fly that you know the performance matched the detail, the car exploded off the start line with little wheel spin. On my small circuit I was unable to get the Alfa running at full speed but had plenty of fun drifting the car around the corners; the torque supplied from the motor is always there to give you the power when you need it.
I had to wait for Tuesday night to roll around before I could let this baby loose on a large club track. It managed the corners superbly, managing to stay flat and let me hand the tail out right around the corner at some very sexy angles. On the straights this car is just a blur, perhaps not quite as quick as my Viper but running in will soon have that sorted.

During the evening I only had one off in testing and this is when we come to the cars bad point, it is very delicate, the mirror was snapped off very easily but luckily I was able to glue it back on. I would suggest gluing in all of the mirrors and the spoiler if you are going to race this car and to remove the aerial.

Overall I think we are onto yet another winner from Fly, once I had the car in my hands I wasn’t going to let go. Overall 8.5 out of 10 a great one!

WHAT A CAR!
