Mod Name: Ian B

Real Name: Ian

Age: Once you get passed 50 you don't have to grow up "it's the law"

Nationality: British

Location: Lincoln, UK

How long on SF: Since Feb 05

How long a Mod: Since Sept 06

Real Job: Ex Serviceman Current employment - Private

Slot History: I was given a 2nd hand Scalextric set as a kid 1968. It was massive and had about thirty pit boxes, several grandstands, Scoreboard, Lemans start, oh did I mention it was four lane, it was so big I never had the space to use it all we moved quite a lot in those days I think it got lost in one of the moves. (IF ONLY I KNEW THEN!) Kids eh!

Early 70's I was given again a 2nd hand set this time it was Carrera, fantastic I had a loft to put it in as well, it came with Grandstands and some fantastic cars that can only be found on specialist sites today. (If only!!!!) I grew up and out of that phase or did I? Nope we just moved again and the box vanished again!

Third time Lucky. In the early 90s I was given another set Scalextric Mighty Metros as a joke Christmas present by my wife, within weeks I had added some new cars I mean those Metros where rubbish! But this time set stayed us with when we moved, eventually we bought our own house, and a few years ago I did the loft just as digital was about to hit the ground, things have just snowballed from there on in, I found this place got digital, well the rest is all documented on here. However I then joined a local club and found Slotracing on wood was really enjoyable and have been doing it every week since, I moved out of the loft and built a slotshed again all documented. I now race all over the country, I've also "developed" a passion for Slotcar photography, I now photograph new release cars for several slotcar companies.

Slot Personality: All round slotter mainly Racing Scratch builds, but I collect, and have digital as-well as analogue. Spends most of his time reading the Tracks and Scenery forum and dreaming if only I could do that?

Favourite slot car: The one on Pre Order that is already overdue.

Wood or plastic? Both

Digital or Analogue? Mainly analogue nowadays (I actually still have a digital set).

Swapmeet or eBay? Neither, Trusted Supplier Only.

Least favourite thing about SlotForum: The blisters! As one of the janitors its hard work trying to keep this place clean and tidy...

Best thing about SlotForum: "The Pay".....It's constantly evolving, initially the digital side which was driven by members of this forum, of course all those scenery building Masters both groups much cleverer than I, though I do learn something everyday. However really the best thing is the many friends I have made through being part of the forum.

Real Name: Gareth Jex

Age: Mid 40's

Nationality: British

How long on SF: Sept 2003

How Long a Mod: a few years

Real Job: Design and build Exhibition Stands Worldwide

Slot History:
Bought lots of Scalextric track, cars when I was about 15/16, had lots of fun racing with mates, decided I liked it and then began collecting. Collected over 3000 Scalextric cars (all types), then decided to concentrate on Slot Rally Cars only. Joined the NSCC and was on the committee for several years (promotions officer), organised the NSCC 25th Anniversary weekend and SlotRallyGB weekends at Toyota and more recently organised the SlotForum SCX Weekend. Currently I run the SlotRallyGB Championship and Web site displaying my collection. One of the few current mods who went to the first Slotforum party in Egg Switzerland. Race most Wednesday's at the Farnham Scalextric Club and of course at as many SlotRallyGB events as I can get to. Recently I commissioned some slot rally cars of my own (because I could not wait for the main manufacturers to do so!) Skoda Fabia S2000 and Citroen BX 4TC.

Slot Personality: Collector, racer, DIY re-livery enthusiast, Kit builder.

Favourite Slot Car: SRGB Skoda Fabia S2000

Wood or Plastic? Both

Digital or Analogue? Analogue-every time.

Swapmeet or eBay? Both.

Least favourite thing about Slotforum:
People who type without thinking about what they are saying and how it could be interpreted by others, especially if they are pointing across a strong point of view, plus the assumption that Mods are paid!

Best thing about Slotforum? Contact and meeting new people and ideas from around the world.

SlotForum Name: Driver#8

Real Name: Nick

Age: 39

Nationality: English

Location: Surrey, UK

How long on SF: This is my ninth year.

Slot History: Childhood slot maniac, born again in 2002 after joining the Oxford Scalextric Club, then joined the Forum after leaving Oxford as a means of staying in touch with former club mates and enjoying the hobby wherever I was. These days I race at Farnham Scalextric Club and on the Slot Rally GB.

Slot Personality: I have no knowledge or ability in tuning cars, but always have too many repaints and kit bashes on the go at one time.

Favourite slot car: Off the top of my head the SCX Skoda Octavia, Pink Kar Bugatti T59 and C125 Porsche 911. Nobody has just one favourite!

Wood or plastic? Wood.

Digital or Analogue? My wife insists that playing with toy cars is geeky but acceptable-but playing with toy cars that have fuel allocations and tyre strategies would constitute sufficient grounds for divorce.

Swapmeet or eBay? eBay.

Least favourite thing about SlotForum: We still haven't cured Scalextric's FF motor fixation.

Best thing about SlotForum: Learning about what's out there and the friends you make. Oh... and my reviews. They're ace, they are.

Slotforum Name: David Lawson

Real Name: David Lawson

Age: 60

Nationality: British

Location: Southend on Sea, UK

How Long on SF: Since 2003

Slot Racing History
I first drove a Scalextric Vanwall in 1960 on a friend's set and have been hooked ever since. During the 1960s I raced Scalextric, Airfix and Revell cars on my home track and when the commercial tracks started in 1966 I raced 1/24 Cox and Monogram cars at weekly club meetings at "The Drag Centre" in Westcliff on their 100' wooden tracks. I also raced club nights and open meetings at "Wonderland Raceway" in Southend from the late 1960s to the early 1970s when the cars were handbuilt brass sidewinder and anglewinders with the vacform bodyshells and very hot Mura motors. From the early to mid 1970s I raced at a small club devoted to scratchbuilt F1 cars before taking a break from the hobby. During this time I built loads of static car kits in all scales. I resumed slot cars in 1990 with a home track and RTR cars, I joined the NSCC in 1993 and contributed articles to the newsletter as well as manning a collection display table at a few NSCC swapmeets. We reformed the Southend Slot Racing Club at this time and it is still very active today. I enjoy every aspect of making slot cars from carving bodyshells, building brass chassis and scratchbuilding all the detail parts.

Slot Racing Personality:

Favourite Slot Car: 1966 Cox Lotus 40

Wood or Plastic: Wood

Digital or Analogue: Analogue although I did a 6-hour race in Paris about 8 years ago on a 150' Davic digital track which was superb as the lane changing was gradual on long straights so it was very realistic. I'm not so convinced on small home tracks.

Swapmeet or Ebay: I enjoy swapmeets for the social aspect but Ebay can be quick and convenient.

Least favourite thing about SlotForum: Rude or arguementative posts.

Best thing about SlotForum: It is a great resource of information about the hobby and excellent for keeping track of events. The scratchbuilding area has been great as a means of sharing all sorts of information and techniques which has encouraged new people to the hobby.

Location: Lugano, Switzerland

How long on SF: Since April 04

How long a Mod: Since August 05

Real Job: Documentary/movie director-photographer

Slot History: Started in the early 60's with a Scalectrix set. Fell in love again in 65-66 with the Cox Cheetah and the 1st commercial wood track in Lugano, went on racing Cox Cucaracha until early 67.
I then stopped slot for other interests like serious girl chasing. Started again in March 2004 with modern plasticars and assembled a 24 m Carrera track now changed into a 30m MDF track
to race my real passion: original and replica Thingies, 60's vintage American slotcars and scratchbuilts both original and replica up to 1968.

Slot Personality: Thingie Kingie

Favourite slot car: Cox Cucaracha (right)

Wood or plastic? Wood

Digital or Analogue? ANALOGUE!

Swapmeet or eBay? Ebay, internet dealers, vintage meetings

Best thing about SlotForum: The people I met through it.

Mod Name: dgersh

Real Name: Don (Gershon Siegel, to explain my ID)

Age: 57

Nationality: US, but resident in France for 25 years

Location: Paris

How long on SF: almost since the beginning

How long a Mod: same as Edo - August 2005 (is it really 2 years already???)

Real Job: Technical translator/copywriter

Slot History: Got first sets in 62-63, an Eldon and an Aurora, raced at home and raceways for about 5 years; raced at commercial tracks again after college in 73-75, then was totally out of it until rediscovering slots at the 1992 Paris Hobby Show. Did modern slot racing (Parma, etc.) for the next ten years or so, while developing collection and getting more and more interested in vintage. I had kept my magazines and books, but not the cars...

Slot Personality: Viscount of Vintage, fan of slot car history and the variety of slots.

Favourite slot car: any interesting scratch-built car - and the many strange permutations that have studded the history of slot racing!

Wood or plastic? Prefer wood, will stoop to plastic when I have no choice. (but Carrera is almost acceptable...)

Digital or Analogue? Analog, but early experience with Davic system in Paris.

Swapmeet or eBay? Both, plus local shops

Least favourite thing about SlotForum: Occasionally having to deal with people's agendas and closed-mindedness.

Best thing about SlotForum: Being able to meet like-minded folks and discuss things in a friendly way; plus the general open-minded approach compared to a lot of other forums.

Mod Name: Mr.M

Real Name: Jim

Age: 48

Nationality: British

Location: Hampshire, UK

How long on SlotForum: Since the first few days

How long a mod: Since the last few days

Real job: Self Employed in Vehicle Recovery/Transport

Slot History: First set bought by Mum when i had just turned three, then increased the collection to about thirty cars and scenic layout over the next 8-10 years. All except layout got put away in about early 70s. Then in 1989 I decided to introduce my stepson to Scalextric, but ended up buying HO for the much bigger layout. I then found out that, despite several house moves, my parents had kept all my childhood stuff. So in trying to find out what I could flog it for, I was fortunate in finding that my local model shop owner was a keen racer and there was actually a club in my village! Joined the club, then the NSCC and here I am many enjoyable years later. Still with those original 30 cars and about 3,000 more!

Slot Personality: Best summed up as "a bit weird". Have a liking for small low powered cars. I collect a bit, kit bash a bit and race a lot.

Favourite Slot Car: Currently SCX Abarth 1000TC.

Wood or Plastic? Wood

Digital or Analogue? Analogue

Swapmeet or eBay? Swapmeet

Least Favourite thing about SlotForum: Very occasionally there can be snobbery or blinkered vision from some.

Best thing about SlotForum: Making people aware that what could be perceived as a small hobby is a thriving one.

Mod Name: Mr Croker

Real Name: Mark

Age: 38

Nationality: British

Location: Ascot, UK

How long on SF: Since Apr 2004

How long a Mod: Dec 2009

Real Job: Sales Director

Slot History: I was given my Dad's old Scalextric set complete with a couple of new cars in the late 70's for Christmas. The older Ford F3L and a Ferrari were used the most though. In the late 90's a friend (Phil Upton) had a conservatory and a son (Ian my Godson) and the old set (boxes of track) was donated and setup up again! After years playing with Radio Control cars the cold winters finally won and a trip with Phil to West London Slot Club started the racing bug. Finally finding a wood track at Molesey slot club the bug really set in after telling my wife "this isn't going to get serious" which I get reminded of frequently. Pinewood is my local club track.

Slot Personality: Racer who likes pretty things. Cars must look good while going quickly.

Favourite slot car: There is Chris Adam's scratchbuilt ERA he lent me for Brooklands 2009 but then Martin De'Ath's Maserati 6CM is so pretty I might have left the ERA on the table. Slot.it's XJR9 Silk Cut but then SCX release the Morgan and the Sunbeam Lotus this year!

So I'll change the question and favourite manufacturer: NSR. Very small team cars look great and built to race!

Wood or plastic? Wood

Digital or Analogue? Analogue

Swapmeet or eBay? Very occasionally eBay but an online supplier in Nelson who supports this forum ?

Least favourite thing about SlotForum: The awesome skills displayed in the Thingie section & scratchbuilt section – just a little jealous!

Best thing about SlotForum: The level of experience and skill in all different sections. I haven't got a track at home but I read the scenery sections and just wonder. Same with the scratch built cars & home made chassis. One day!!

SlotForum Name: abie321

Real Name: Anthony Bartlett

Age: 56

Nationality: South African/English

Location: Brussels, Belgium

How long on SF: Since the start

Slot History: Got given a scalextric set for Christmas when I was 9 - and have been hooked ever since. Have had 3 collections, but for various reasons have had to sell them. However I still have that orginal GP 33 set. Have been rebuilding a collection now rather on what I like versus having to have everone ever produced At the moment I have predominantly hand built cars/non production cars, with a smattering of new cars that I really like.

Slot Personality: Quiet but determined - rofl.

Favourite slot car: Racer Gunston 365 Ferrari.

Wood or plastic? Wood

Digital or Analogue? Analogue (Come on I am 56)

Swapmeet or eBay? Both - love swapmeets, but ebay is soooooo useful

Least favourite thing about SlotForum: People who think that they have the right to just open their mouth and just say anything that they feel - and the get upset when they are stopped!

Best thing about SlotForum: Seeing the superb work of others, gaining fantastic tricks from those far more skilled than I and gaining insights from those with better brains than I.
