In the Gold Leaf Team Lotus thread, David Lawson asked if I had some additional pics. Unfortunately, I have very few pics and only one of those feature a Formula 1 car (greatly obscured by dust during an off!). During my high school days I was an avid motor racing fan and also a quite keen "picture taker" (as opposed to "photographer", as evinced by the quality of pics. Mind you: they are mediocre quality scans of 30 - 40 year old pics as a rule....), but I tended not to mix my hobbies. When I was at the track, I was fully engrossed with cars and racing. However, I did take a few pics around that time. First: someone who will rename nameless (not because I want to protect his ego but purely because, after 35+ years I have no idea....) having an off at Malmesbury corner at Killarney, near Cape Town in South Africa, probably 1972: ![]() Something similar to my previously posted Chevron B19 on the main straight (bit of a grand title for Killarney, but still....). Note tha absence of spectators: this was at an unofficial practice day when my brother was testing his saloon racing Triumph 2000. ![]() And on to saloon racing: a Toyota Celica of that period ![]() And now for something completely outrageous: a picture of what was known in South Africa as a Chevy Firenza Can-Am. GM locally brought in the European Vauxhall Firenza and renamed it a Chevy. The next step was for a local tuner to take a Z28 Chevy V8 and shoehorn it into the small commuter. Some more info here. A great overview of some of the hot specials generally of that period in South Africa can be found here ![]() A Ford Escort: these were extremely popular in saloon car racing at the time ![]() And because of my motorcycling addiction: had to have some bike pics! ![]() ![]() Quite some time later: 1992, and some very unique photgraphs. For the one year, the Paris - Dakar rally was changed: it became the once off Paris- Le Cap rally. One of the true marathons of motor racing. The following two pictures were taken of the all-conquering Mitsubishi Pajeros at a special demonstration special stage outside Cape Town. ![]()
