I have long been interested in space utilization when it comes to slot cars, mainly because I do not have a ton of raw space available for the hobby. I did the three-teired rally track thing, with hidden ramps connecting the three levels and reversing loops at each end. Then I did the folding table thing so I could rearrange the track more readily. Now I have gone back to an earlier idea with a dual level "bookshelf" track, but this time the transition between the two levels is a hidden spiral at each end of the track. I did an experiment with this on my current layout....R1 spirals at each end and about 8' of track in between, on two levels. This offers some really fun scenic, backdrop, and lighting opportunities as the two levels are seperate visually and do not interrelate at all, except for the spirals which are hidden behind doors. The entire unit is at eye level, about 50" off the floor. As is my custom, the cabinetry is very finished and presentable in an indoor space. A horizontal bi-fold door covers the track area. In fact, the track cabinatry creates a little niche underneath where I have a seating area with two cushy chairs and a small table. The R1s spirals work great, but I think a more permanent, bullet-proof solution is going to R2s. When I do this, I think I'll work towards encircling three walls of the room. I'll take some pics one of these days.
