Italian Job / Alpine Track (The build begins) Options

Thanks Julian, I already have a Jag (just not showcased it yet). The Minic cars have a different wheelbase to T-jets and are wider but I may get a DB5 T-jet body and chop the roof off

Well after looking at the photo's of the mini's I took I am definately not happy with the width of the wheels. So I shortened the front wheels and also took the front wheels from another car and placed on the rear of the car and am very happy with the results so will have to order 3 more sets of wheels just to get the front wheels so if anyone wants some wide wheels (would go on an AFX or scalextric) just let me know.



So back to the landrover...had a visit to the model shop and got some plastic square section and also some 1:72 Jerry cans . Put the plastic on the bottom so I can mount the T-jet Chassis properly



Then to work creating the front bumper and mounting the jerry cans...I have also carved in the painted out side windows (not done too good a job I'm afraid, it's very difficult to carve at this scale)



Then started to create the rear 'A' frame out of paper clips. Will join them with milliput and spray it matt black. I need to find a chain that is fine enough to mount onto it.



Now the roofrack is the next challange. I will try to find plastic rod that is thin enough but it will take some doing

So in the model shop was trying to find something that looks similar to the Ford Thames van



A Ford Thames OO scale model does not exist so had to come up with a similar model and found this. Once I strip it and spray it it will be close but a bit miffed I can't find the exact model.

Got some great news today..After E-mailing Vincent of Vincent-Wheels he has agreed to produce some Minilites to add to his range..They won't appear until the new year but I'm sure the wait will be worth it..The Road Race Replica's wheels are just too big for the mini's (although would look good on an american muscle car)

No more progress since last week but should get a couple of nights in this week. The Miura body is ready and on it's way from the states and Tom Bowman has thrown is a couple of pressies for me to help me on my way but will show all once they arrive.

Another little parcel arrived in the post today from Tom Bowman at BAT-Jets..so mounted it up to an autoworld chassis and tried the road race replica wheels that where too big for the mini's and below are the results



Tom also threw in a couple of pressies, a DB5 and an E-Type to help with the theme.

Hello Yakboy,
I ended up using thread at the top, a simple knot and then trimmed the tails. At the bottom end I glued a small magnet inside the back door and the chain sticks to it. I suppose that you could use thread at the bottom end as well.

Thanks for such an interesting post I had no idea there was such a thing as R/C 1/64 cars. I'm looking forward to seeing how your circuit progressess - the Kastleberg one looks fantastic. I also like your storage soluton - wish I was as practically-minded!

I'm a bit of a newbie here. I'd bought a Tomy HO set when the kids were small and I hadn't used it for a while. Recently I'd been given a load of Tyco track from a mate and what I'd like to do is build the best cicrcuit time, space (and wallet!) will allow, ideally something that will fit to a standard door.

cracking idea for a theme mate read through whole post , it's awesome and time and detail will make this stunning that your putting in , i also think that kastleberg setup is amazing if you get a finish like that WOW atb will keep an eye on this build daz

A bit of an update, not had much time to play recently as have been restoring a bike for my younger daughters birthday and have been getting rid of a few large VW camper parts to make a bit more room in the garage. Anyway the Landrover is all painted and the winch is finished on the back, just the roof rack to tackle now. I have bought some 1mm plastic rod and will have a crack at it. I have a fear that it will be too delicate and the first crash it will fall to pieces so I am in two minds whether to do it or not. Still not worked out what I am going to use for the wire mesh over the windows. I've not found any net curtaining or material that is open weave enough yet , anybody got any idea's....no pictures of the landy now until it's finished as I don't want to spoil the suprise.

So back to the track.

I have constructed the col de gran st bernard viaduct out of MDF and sprayed it with primer. I need to apply some paint effects to simulate concrete at some point.
I have also got some Faller bridge barriers to apply once it is finished to complete the look.





I have also been fiddling about with the format of the alpine section and have added a new hairpin at the end and also a "hump". Not sure about the hump but you do have to slow down for it or you deslot which adds to the technical difficulty which is always a good thing





Now onto Turin.
Before I commit to the alpine scheme I need to work out if all the turin set pieces will fit in. The set pieces I am including are as follows and in this order
1. Cars start from bullion truck
2. Cars go around hairpin fountain
3. Cars go through Piazza de Castello cafe area
4. Cars go down church steps
5. Cars go over river Po weir
6. Cars go through sewer
7. Cars go onto motorwary.

I have worked out most of these set pieces but the one that has been troubling me is the church and steps. Below is the church





So using a combination of single and double track I've mocked up a slope for the mini's to go down. If I commit to this I will chop the double track to make it into single track ( the good thing about faller track with it's joining pins is that you can create custom sections of track quite easily) I've put on a building at the top to give an idea of scale but it looks huge so I might have to cheat with scale and not make an exact copy of the church. I will use styrene plastic square section to create the steps between the track slope to at least give the illusion of steps.



I don't know what you think..I would be grateful for any suggestions and criticism on this one...and does anybody know where to get ho scale greek/roman columns for the church as I have googled and not found anything suitable. I suppose I could make some from balsa but it would take ages. If anybody is off to greece a tacky tourist souivener of the parthenon might be just the thing.

Have you tried looking at scenery for 1:76 military dioramas, this is OO scale, T-Jets are around 1:76 with American car bodies.

which would be a good start. Then a cup with a domed lid would make a good main body of the church

For the steps you could create the illusion by painting them on the track using lines and shading, saw it on the [url="http://www.dragoart.com"] web site.
