My Ferrari 360 just went up in smoke.

The motor is dead slow, as if it is binding, and it smokes. Run it for about a minute and it is back up to speed.

I don't think you can buy just the motor, but Avant Slot and MSC offer motors and brackets that fit in SCX cars, these have the bonus of being quicker motors as well

This is a fairly common SCX motor problem. I have several that creep round the track at first and then clear. Often a squirt of WD40 helps or running them backwards for a minute. Basically its dirt and oil on the commutator...

Hmmm... It is running fine now after a couple of dozen laps but it did the smoke/slow thing last time too.

[EDIT] Thanks, I'll run it backwards and give it a squirt.

Sadly not. I had the top off it and 4 kids all peering into it when it went, so it looked like what it was... a melting toy.

Ken is right, but I'd not use any sort of lubricant on the carbon brushes as the stuff degrades the material, makes it a bit gloopy and spongy, and makes even more mess that attracts even more dirt.

Best thing to do is take out the brushes and wash with liquid lighter fuel after scraping the copper plate gaps lightly with a pin when the car starts to show degraded performance. You only have to do it every few thousand laps and it all takes 2 minutes.

Spray switch cleaner (not WD40) inside and then give it a good run to clear any old oil and rubbish from inside (forward and back).

I use WD 40 and then Switch cleaner - if you use WD40 make sure it is run and the excess burns off- otherwise you can mess up the motor completely.

Top-notch advice on the lighter-fuel Screwneck.
No nasty & gloopy oil-products in that, to collect even more gunk.

Meths is another good-one, along those lines...
...you can even dip the entire-motor; for a jolly good clean-out.

Good luck with the maintanance Harry.

Cheers.

Hi Harry,

Before you go out and get a new motor ,double check to see if it is not the lights that are causing the problem and short circuiting the motor.Remove the body from the chassis and see if the motor runs without the lights in circuit.
I have experienced this on a number of SCX cars that start smoking. After the lights burn out completely the car runs well again.
SCX are notorius for poor lights and I have also found that the motor needs to warm up a bit before it gives its best

Regards
Bryan

i should like these motors, but i dont! not standard anyway. try proslot or hawk6 90* springs and brushes in it. that will work and you get a few more rpm from it, and if you want a quicker motor put a pro slot 27k arm in it or a hawk7 55k arm. their really cheap to buy and the place to get the rx motors from is the usa, even with postage they work out cheaper. they musn,t like them very much over there. john

before you completely burn your motor :

You have a common problem of carbon dust from the brushes, in the commutator.
This is causing short circuit.

Remove the springs & brushes, open the motor, clean the commutator with a soft piece of shirt, and use a small needle to remove all the brush powder inside the "lanes" between the 3 poles of the commutator.

Just mount everythink back and it'll work like a charm, maybe faster.

Never, never use liquid miracle products inside a RX can comm. You'll only soften the brushes dust : the motor will run better 10 mins, and ...die.
