I`ve just emailed Scalextric suggesting an out of the box drag racing set, so will let you know if they reply. I tried this with Carrera a while back but didn`t even get an answer. I basically enquired if they could produce an out of the box set with a scale 1/8 mile straight track and some form of light tree/bridge and a finish bridge to measure run times and detect false starts. Not very complicated for them and if mass produced could make it cost effective as they already produce suitable track and cars. The idea is more about having a portable basic out of the box set so that clubs and individuals can try out slotdrag racing without breaking the bank. I`ve put a comment over on the the Scalextric next product blog section HERE if you want to add to it. (its still being moderated at the moment so won`t be on for about 24 hours). There are a couple of posts on there asking for hotrods so if enough people add to it maybe Scalextric will seriously think about it....

Carrera did make a set called something like 'Drag race challenge' I think, using a couple of their muscle cars, but they did the track in a figure of eight or similar nonsense. Seems they totally missed the point of drag racing....or couldn`t be bothered to do a bit of research.
I sometimes wonder if european manufacturers can`t get their head around making a set with a straight length of track, thinking it will be boring and therefore a financial flop. The crucial part is if they can be bothered to knock up a half decent timing sytem to go with it, which would solve the problem. To be honest I`m not holding my breath as quite a lot of manufacturers these days tend to want to stick to a tried and tested formula with little R+D expense, but shoving out the same tired products (albeit with a makeover) will probably bite them in the arse at some point. |

I found the two sets which Carrera could`ve made into proper drag racing sets.

Already tried that with Carrera, unfortunately they didn`t reply. The only way they may start to listen is if people start adding comments on the Scalextric link I posted earlier.

Excellent idea ad shouldn't be expensive for them to produce.
The only thing they really have to redesign ould be the start finish timing track sections. -------------------- Slot car scrap yard Does your car carry a doner card? |

There are quite a few comments over on the Scalextric site now, requesting a drag racing set. The admin team over there didn`t seem to mention it in their posts but who knows, maybe its given them food for thought.

I`ve just emailed Scalextric suggesting an out of the box drag racing set, so will let you know if they reply. I tried this with Carrera a while back but didn`t even get an answer. Ummm bit of a scale problem... The 1/8th of a mile track would be 20ft + The start area and braking... err thats a 25ft setup... bigger than most uk houses and garages can cope with! If you want to do it there is stuff already available... the sportworld powerbase does the following:- Supports open track designs... (closed loop not required) Has four beep start signal with lights... 1/100th Timing... Jump start detection with programmable penalty system... auto braking for quick distance stopping... Two lanes race at once... Ghost cars for beating your best performance... they are hard to find but there is one on ebay at the moment... Sportworld unit on ebay uk maybe you can buy the above and do what you want but think its maybe expexting too much to expect anybody manufacture an indoor racing set that most people could not find a place to build! -------------------- |

Just spotted this drag racing set over on fleabay, HO scale unfortunately but it`s not bad for a 'straight out of the box' set.... NHRA drag racing set
Seems like there are a few NHRA sets out there at the moment, here`s a youtube link to there oval drag track with drag lights. NHRA drag set vid |

There are a few people who own the AW sets, and there is the means to add timing to it.
I don't think saying that is it 'unfortunately' HO would be a good way to contact users though -------------------- |
