![]() I've bought one of the new Aston Martin DBR9 Pro Performance Assembly Kits and here in this review I look at the contents and possibilities offered with the various motor and gear combinations. Nice format with the gearing table.
Bit disappointed that the kit has only 2 Alooominyum wheels; it has been depicted as containing 4 since it was announced, unless "4 x Endurance hubs and tyres", as written in the catalog, doesn't mean 4 sets of hub and tyre, but only 2 hubs + 2 tyres. |

Hi Doug
I like the ideal of this kit by scaley and with all the parts included to play with the overall performance etc. But compared to a slot it kit or nsr kit - whats the difference? I think NSR will be price and slot it a little searching on the web and you will most like match the price etc. Is it the all the parts that included gives this the edge if you were using this as a beginners car to build as a kit. But undecided as yet. Grateful for everyone advice. cheers vik |

Well Scalextric is obviously not Slot.it or NSR. The gears are not metal and won't have the precision that can be had with those, but then some people like plastic gears. The rear wheels are silicone and Scalextric only produce one Endurance size tyre in the Tuning range. Perhaps some people would prefer more choice in that dept.
Scalextric had it's own fan base and for a Scalextric fan, this is a great way to get into tuning. Learning a bit about racing and the possibilities to be had buy switching around parts. For club racers that may run a Scalextric GT race series, then this car would be great - obviously a Slot.it wouldn't be allowed to race in such a class. For people who want a plain DBR9 body to produce their own livery, this kit is a perfect starting point. |

I think its a great idea for scalextric to bring out this kit, it will help people new to the hobby tune any of there scalextric cars not just the DBR9.

Sounds like a great idea, but having raced many Slot.it
and NSR and Ninco cars they really are so far behind the times "Scalextric". A quick look on Ebay will give you a new Slot.it car for £30-£40 and these cars are just so much better made, with smooth running metal gears. I wish Scalextric well, but I feel they really are aiming at the 7-15 year old market. . This post has been edited by Doug: 24 Jan 2011, 08:20

F40s fall apart, chassis breaks and your tyres come off too often Golders. They are not perfect. Just a quick reminder to all that the 'tuning parts' included in the kit are for a 3mm axle not the standard 2.38mm axle. Scalex released the tuning parts quite some time ago, but neglected to make it clear that they were all for a different sized axle. Some of the more cynical among us would possibly suggest that this is Scalex's way of moving a glut of parts that didn't sell.

Nothing wrong with choosing the 7-15 y.o market segment. I dare say there are a lot more of them than there are the 40+ market segment.
A couple of points. The pinions look like they are of different diameters. So can you only mate up certain pinions with certain spur gears to get a good mesh? Or are the pictures deceiving? I can only assume that the failed experiment of 3mm axles in an attempt to lock people into "scaly upgrades" just wont go away. Talk about flogging a dead horse. Trust me, the horse is dead, you can beat it as much as you like, it aint gonna move. Most other suppliers of upgrades use 3/32". One can only assume that there must be a scaly wharehouse somewhere in England with hundreds and thousands of these 3mm axles, spur gears and bearings which no one wants?? cheers rick1776 |

Especially at the price they charged for them as spare parts - Plafit makes a range of economical 3mm axles, gears and wheels. A place to look if you want to swap out the so-so rear wheels in the kit. DM -------------------- Redisovering slotcars

Kinda my thought to Ember, but nice try from Scaley though.
If you stick to the lowest rpm motor, OR Scaley come up with a better chip that won't fry at high revs, this would seem to be a great way to upgade your SSD circuit. 4 Astons, chipped and in different liveries.......... -------------------- They're only Toys cars after all!!!

The idea is a good one. Really. It's a good way for someone to get all the bits and pieces and experiment for themselves. But I never understood why the 3mm axle. I got caught out on all the tuning parts when I started looking to experiment.
I'll possibly grab a pair of them at some stage. The Astons are the only one in the series that I'm interested in. Shame about the wheels though. They don't look like they'll take inserts. And without some disguise they look fairly ugly. And while I'm at it, why on earth does one need 5 axles??? Surely one of the right length is enough. -------------------- Anorak.
