The English Association of HO Racing Clubs (EAHORC) was set up in 2002 to promote club racing of HO scale cars in the UK. Races take place at locations all over the UK and we are always looking for new clubs to align with us. I was hoping someone could give me some advice on what would be a good choice of car as a basis to run in the mod class. I appreciate that everyone will have their own thoughts on this, but as a complete novice any advice would be welcome. Bearing in mind I have no tuning experience etc, what do people think would be a good place to start? I race at SCHORC who allow aftermarket magnets in their mod class but looking forward I hope to attend some EAHORC meetings as well so it would be better if it was within those rules as well.

Jim,

Because EAHORC has a class that is faster than Mod, aftermarket magnets are not allowed in that class, only in the faster one.

But regardless of that I still believe the ultimate package is:

A narrow marchon chassis, with a tyco front axle and wheels/tyres
A Micro Scalextric Ferrari F40 body
A red can motor from a Tomy SRT or Turbo chassis

To obtain one, check what Tony has first. Then:

I am not suggesting you get those, but the links are for reference.

Slotcarsdirect have the red motors for £2 or so.

if you look at the scores from Sunday for Dave Rouse , and especially those for Craig, I think you will see what a potent car we are talking about...

Jim, the next time we meet at Yelling you can have a try of Craigs Marchon and see what can be achieved, after a good look at it you may be able to pick up some tips from it, sorry but I can't help much with the tec stuff as we didn't build her.

I'd go with what Deane has said apart from I don't think you'll need a Tyco front axle, just change the front tyres for Tomy Turbo ones, I don't like the F40 body, I think the Micro Porsche 911 body handles better, you may want to change the pickup springs for Tomy ones but this can cause sticky pickups. You'll also need a Super G pinion for the motor, the standard Turbo one is too long with the original Marchon crown gear.

Both Craig's and Dave's Marchons are running different back axles and have higher gearing.

My Marchon runs the following, Tomy green wire motor with Super G pinion, Marchon back axle, flattened pickups, Marchon pickup springs, Marchon front wheels with Tomy tyres. Rear tyres are as low as you can get the car (it scrapes on high bits of track) but I can't remember what size tyres to get for this .422 I think.
Micro Scalextric Porsche 911 body with sticky ballast.

This set up is good enough for 3rd at EAHORC meetings and 1st at SCHORC meetings, but I need to find around an extra 10% of speed from somewhere to catch up to Dave and Craig.

You could also try a Marchon wide chassis, wide Micro Scalextric bodys will go straight on these but I haven't really used a wide much, probably the best body to go for is the MS DTM Mercedes. I have wide chassis that I can sell you for the same price as Tony (if he doesn't have any) but no narrows.

Good luck and I hope you decide to take up modified as it is a class that could do with more people.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will have a look at the Marchon. I will have a word with Tony as I believe he has some some sale. I thought it would be a good class to go for as it's a regular at SCHORC (from what I can gather from my 2 attendances!)

Paul, thanks for the offer to try the car out that would be great. I am away in March but should be there in April.

Julian, I am hoping to make the April EAHORC meeting so should get chance to meet you there, I will see if I can have something ready to race by then.

Hi Jim, the Marchon is the chassis to go for in this class, it may be 20 years old, but it is a stunning performer and with a few tweaks it is still the chassis to beat in that class, you can try some of mine next time you come to the club.

Just be careful with bodies for these, as all are very much NOT created equal.

I never found anything to match the F40, especially as it uses the narrow 'F1' chassis as opposed to the wide chassis, and has a short wheelbase. I suspect if you tried to mount non-MR1 bodies you might find something even better, but the chassis are bulky and make doing that hard. The ultimate closed wheel body is considered to be the Rokar Datsun 240Z.



That often get used on Tomy and Tyco chassis, but no idea if it would fit the MR1. Doubt it.

The fairly new AFX GT40s are considered really good race bodies, and they would convert I suspect smile.gif

Do you have a photo account Tony, then we could all see them.

I would be amazed if anything bettered the F40, but that is the beauty of HO racing - there are always new angles to look at.

Actually, you have an F40 body on the stall don't ya?

My lad went in the loft yesterday to put some stuff away and dug out all his old HO stuff from when he raced. If there are any narrow F1 Marchons chassis I will post the findings here. They are what he used to race, but somehow I suspect I nabbed the F40 before it went loftwards LOL.

Occasionally, something suprises people - for a while the AP corvette was king at the 24hr race for example, which was strange, but generally I trust things like mass and centre-of-gravity. The F40 has a long pedigree of winning national races in the UK.

This thread did get me thinking about things that might trump the F40, and the Aurora 917 popped into my head.
