Very nice!
I'm just about to build another oval, this time larger with the back straight chicaned rather than the corners.
I've done a few of the escort XR3i's as stock cars as they are really easy to get cheap and most of the bits that are usually missing I dont use anyway!
I'll post some pics soon.

Here's a few pics of some cars ready for some oval racing,

scx escort, a favourite on the small ovals in the uk and were used for everything from stock cars, stock rods to national hot rods

The good old scalextric XR3i, cheap and plentiful and make great stock cars as standard, just strip them out and paint them up, good for a bit of contact racing!

And lastly, the mini, good entry level motor sport!

I have a question...and its not really slot car related...although since you have built superstox, I imagine you guys have to be fans of oval racing of some sort...Do they race sprintcars or midgets/speedcars in the Uk? I cant help but look at the superstox without thinking they look like they are out of the 1970s in what was called in Australia 'modifieds' or 'super modifieds'. America, Australia, New Zealand and pretty sure South Africa run sprintcars etc...just wondering. Without the risk of sounding offensive, superstox look very out dated in terms of world dirt oval racing. I could be very wrong of course.

Having said that gents, your slot cars (scale models) are a very good scale samples of the class.

Have a look at Speedworth Internationals website to see what is raced on small ovals in the UK.
It's the World Hot Rod Championship this weekend at Foxhall Stadium, which is about a mile from my house - not that I'll be there.

Alreet,

there are Sprint cars run over in this country, but due to our tracks being smaller and narrower than the ovals in USA, OZ and NZ, they're not the best places to race Sprints. Plus over here contact racing is the preferred option of Oval racing, with the BRISCA F1 Stock cars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48wbBRs6mZc) being the kings of the ovals. Superstox are like a poorer brother of BRISCA F2 Stock cars, which are smaller and limited to 2 litres, but race to the same rules.

Slot stox over here have moved on a bit since the fender benders (which were a poor representation at the time) and there are lots of clubs running them up and down the country. I race at the Midlands Club which can be found at http://www.midlandslotstox.co.uk/

Hope that answers your questions

Dave,

As I was involved in "stock" car racing in my formative years, I was encouraged by this thread to get some of these cars.

The roots of oval racing in the UK is similar to that of stock cars in the US. The difference in evolution being that UK "stock" cars ran on and still run, sometimes, on motorcycle speedway tracks. These tracks at nominally 1/4 mile are smaller than the 1/2 mile ovals in other countries. They are also narrow which as has been said results in contact between cars.

At some point in the history the contact side was adopted as the norm. Unlike super modifieds, and the like in other countries, it is now full contact racing and the use of bumpers is needed to get past and is encouraged. As a result of the small tracks the speeds are not as high as Sprint cars and as you can see the cars are "armoured". F2 cars and Speedworth (sound of spitting :-) ) cars are smaller as UK cars are smaller and have smaller engines. The Scalextric ones are based on 80's Speedworth cars. I will add here for the scale guys that although the use of FIA F1 tyres on these slot cars is a bit extreme the bumper height is spot on 1/32.

BriSca F1 cars have power plants which are close to or the same as super modifieds, at about 650hp.
The V8 powered cars of both groups are getting closer. Philosophically the two groups are like Indy and Champ cars. Sometimes at the World Final there are drivers from NZ, Holland and South Africa. Holland for sure. In Holland they have some longer tracks so the World Long Track event is held in Holland. Usually won by the Dutch!

One thing "unique" to this form of racing is the starting order. Drivers are classified monthly by current points standing with different roof colours and the faster drivers with the higher points score start further back, hence the bumpers!

These Scalextric cars come from a simpler time with exposed mechanicals and are a blast with their 360 degree guides. They are more fun with a beer. than a barrel of monkeys. I am not a great fan of Scalextric Drift cars but these....

Yellabelly,

I am going to be crass and paint one of mine like the Dodo car as the rear wings are almost the same. 1978 I think, Red with silver stripes. Another if I get really enthusiastic like Stu Bamforth of the same year brown and gold.

Great cars and great thread.

I grew up with my dad banger racing for many years. Often we would share meetings with the stock cars. Most of the racing we went to was at dirt tracks, although they were mostly mud tracks. Hatfield (in the UK) was where we went mostly but quite often we would go to Brafield at Northampton.

Saw many stock car and hot rod races.

For some reason my Dad bought what seems to have been a BRISCA F2 style stox for my brother and myself to learn to drive in. As we kept the banger cars and truck etc at a mates farm we used to get to drive around one of the fields.

Happy memories.

If i had a track at home i would certainly get some of the stox above.

Keep building

Dave
