Sorry if I offended you and perhaps I should not have strayed into the territory because it's so emotive but i'm not completely wrong am I? Look at who asked the question and think about how an honest answer would have sounded.

Yes.

I'm only 39

I would have thought that after 39 years you'd have learnt when to stop digging.

Anyways, the show on the 1964 European GP was great. Some excellent interviews with the likes of Bruce McLaren , John Surtees & Graham Hill. The colour film was excellent quality.
I`ve got the film of the 1956 season to watch, & on Wednesdayat 8pm they`re showing 11th GP D`Europe!

Alright Kev, you've convinced me! I'll watch some of the old stuff if I can find time away from the Tour de France.

Anyway the Tour de France is on now, so who cares about F1! smile.gif

You've got great taste. Slot cars and cycling; a combination of interests that's hard to beat, if you ignore Hornby's attempt to ruin it with their Olympic velodrome sets...

(Note to anyone who hasn't yet realised: cycle road racing - once you understand the complex tactics employed within it - makes F1 look as interesting as tiddlywinks. tongue.gif)

Yup, Cycle Road Racing is easily the most exiting sport you can watch on the TV anytime, anywhere! and the UK could clean up this year with both the yellow and green jerseys smile.gif

It's worth looking to see whats on ESPN Classic if you can get it. Recently they had a serise of half hour GP highlights. 77, 78 & 79 British GPs. 69 Monaco & Spanish

Cheers chaps, think I would like to SIGN off from this debate by saying I learnt a lesson this week.

Back on topic, always worth keeping an eye out for those 70's and 80's season reviews ESPN Classic show every now and then, 1976 at 4am tonight. What DVR's are made for.

Also the Swindon branch of that land where everything is a pound currently has an interesting looking DVD called something like 'The greatest Formula One cars of all time' and guess what.... it's only £1! Not sure if it's a nationwide thing or why I put it back on the shelf but looks like it was once a full price release and the sleve contains a favourable quote from the original Autosport review. It also appears to feature THAT battle from Dijon in what one assumes should be better than You Tube quality.

I'm totally against the BBC sell off -neither the BBC or SKY came out of it morally very well. I see the viewing figures are dropping, which was inevitable. My view of SKY is low enough on the best of days, but people seem not to realise that once they kill off the opposition they lose all incentive to provide a quality service. WRC is all but dead in the water, seems F1 wants to follow the same suicidal path. And I didn't see the IMHO hypocritical Witmarsh, Brundle et al complaining when SKY offered their usual financial carrots, despite the reassuring rhetoric. It's totally beyond me with all the values that News International uphold, that people are happy to carry on subscribing to SKY. Anyway, that's my take on the whole sorry saga. I watched one race one there, wouldn't be in a hurry to repeat the experience -it was roughly equivalent to the BBC effort but with much poorer analysis and less knowledgeable presenters.

I pretty much agree with most of that Mat but it is what it is. They reason the sports they choose to buy are important enough to people like me will ignore the less palatable part of the empire like The Sun and in the case of test cricket and motorsport with me they were right.

Well off topic but the WRC will soon be dead not because of pay tv but because the FIA have not a clue what people want, but thought they did. Eurosport do, so the IRC may have a future, meanwhile ESPN certainly do so rallycross looks like the future of off road for now and that's really sad IMO, akin to losing Le Mans and ending up with the BTCC.

Here's my two pennys worth. Watched the German GP last week on Virgin as it was a free weekend for sky sports nad not impressed enough to want to change my subscription. Every time I switched over to the F1 channel between practice, qually and the race I seed to be watching the same program.

If you want to here what I think was the best ever commentary team watch some of the highlight clips on the BBC F1 web site with Murry Walker and James Hunt. I love the way James was always happy to call a driver stupid or an idiot if they did something wrong.
