With these two PP RB36 kits it is - or maybe just was - my intention to create the STP March Racing Team from the Monaco GP in 1972:
![]() That would be: #3 March 721X - Ronnie Peterson #4 March 721X - Niki Lauda But then it occured to me, that the smooth Scalextric W9422 tyres are completely wrong for this very, very rainy race. So my question goes like this: Is it possible to get wet race tyres matching the RSLW and RSWS wheels from Penelope Pitlane? If not I have to turn my attention to either the Spanish or the Belgian GP of the same year. Only two alternative races for the not so lucky 721X. Cheers, Holger -------------------- Best regards,

Holger,
I enjoy seeing your quest to produce complete teams/grids develop and your attention to detail is impressive. Here is my version of the Peterson Monaco car and another photo of it along side the Lotus 72. (I am happy with slicks but good luck in finding "wet weather" tyres for these newer Scalextric/PP hubs.) ![]() ![]() Keep the pictures coming! Cheers, Philip |

Philip - lacking your skills for details on the single car leaves me to mass production
But this March 721X vs. Monaco 1972 thing is becoming more and more complicated. Searching on the web every race photo in the wet shows these March racers without the STP logo on the front and without the roundel in front of the cockpit. Instead the cars seems to have a large white square marking on the nose with the black race number on it. In addition car #4 (Niki Lauda) has a white stripe on semi right side of the nose. Can anybody confirm this? And to round things up, Ronnie drove with a red rear wing, while Niki´s was white. Holger -------------------- Best regards,

Errr, fascinating trying to get the tyres right but as I pointed out in my recent thread rather more important will be moving the exhausts down as they never took part in any GP with the high exhaust set up!

Holger: It seems no-one knows of tyres with an authentic wet tread. Have you looked at and rejected early 1970s Scalextric F1 rear tyres? They were treaded or ribbed. Definitely not ideal, but perhaps the only alternative to slicks among ready-mades.
The originals, fitted from 1972 until about 1976, were probably C5962. The Ortmann replacements are 36a. The 36b may be worth looking at too. It appears to have less embossed wording to remove, though I don't know if dimensions are different. Fronts: The 37c recommended by PP looks ribbed in the RS SlotRacing display and seems to be the tyre that was usually fitted at the front of Scalextric F1s in the early '70s. To me, they (and their wheels) have always appeared too small. I haven't found better replacements yet, but there just might be something among rears for GT, saloon or rally cars. Other producers of tyres include Graeme / GT in Australia, at http://home.alphalink.com.au/~gt/Assets/Ht...Wheelsl.htm#Top . Rob J |

I've been around and I have to say I've found nothing that even approaches those wet tyres....
I did dream up the idea of heating up an appropriate grille and rolling rubber tyres across it to get an embossed patern but haven't risked it. A pint to the first to pull that one off! Andi -------------------- |

Sorry a bit off topic but your quest has stirred a memory from 10 years ago.

Could you "true" some grooves into a slick tyre.
Make up a card with some raised strips of sandpaper and go for it |

Early 1970s wet tyre treads don't look particularly complex when seen at speed. This pic is from 1974. They look much the same in a photo of the winning BRM at Monaco in 1972. This photo was just easier to copy.
Some work on the Scalextric or Ortmann tyres could make them passable imitations for those of us who aren't into counting grooves as well as rivets. Rob J ![]() ![]() |

I'm no rivet counter but that looks more like a Lotus - Shows the tyres nicely though!
I think this is the photo you were referring to...

I'm interested to hear from anyone else who has bought those tyres. I bought several pairs from RS slotracing who stocks them from Ortmann. They are SO out of round that they are a) unuseable and
Anyone had the same experience or got any other better supplier. Cheers Andi PS In practice he used slicks as someone else suggested......
