Wow, I'd buy four of those Astons in green (or silver) for my hire fleet straight off if they were done as bombproofs to go with the Ferraris and Lamborghinis!

 Good one I suspect the Aston will be a "high impact" car, as I think it's gonna be paired with a new chase car, suggesting 90o x-over and maybe side swipes in the set. But, I don't think even Scaley know what the chase car will be......or do they......

Hi All
What would be really terrific would be Scalex announcing a "low impact" motor compatible with their current range and future cars. Something with the performance characteristics of a Ninco NC1 would be sensational! Our Club has just about stopped using Scalex cars for racing. Of our 19 classes in 2007 we were down to only 3 Scalex - Nascars, Muscle cars and Aussie V8s. Scalex motors are just too much of a handful with the magnet out - even with weight added. And with the magnet in, most of the cars are simply too fragile. A real pity. They make some truly beautiful racing models. Cheers C57 |

Or use weaker magnets. Or stock magnets mounted higher.

Thanks (S and M1!!) for your suggestions on dampening the standard Mabuchi motor. Very helpful. But we've tried them.
"A lighter magnet" isn't a bad option even if regrettably (and unsurprisingly) comes with the on/off characteristics of magnet racing. Our club got through what seemed a long, long season with one class using lighter magnets but I don't think we were ever entirely confident that all the magnets were the same gause! But if you aren't a magnet hater, this does help with many cars. "Turning down the volts" assumes a variable transformer - not all our club tracks have one. In any case, reducing the volts deadens the cars. By that I mean that It doesn't just reduce the top end speed, it smoothers the acceleration too. The effect is a "doughiness" like using a seventy ohm controller when a forty-five or less resistor is needed to make to the car run freely. Another bind is that the Scalex cars that would benefit most from a less assertive motor are their "classics" such as the recent F1 Goodwood series. These have little room for adding weight to stabilise the cars. Result: class unoffically "abandoned" half way thru the season and an impressive collection of slightly dinted shelf queens. There's an irony here . . . The two Astrin Martin C57s that came with my first set had old Triang/Hornby railway motors (which SCX still use in their vintage F1 cars). Frankly, those motors had/have better handling characterics than the Mabuchis still favoured by Scalex. This does not say a lot for 50 years of technical development when it come to Scalex motors. Well, nothing good anyway. When compared with the fantastic strides made by Scalex in recent times, the continuing lack of choice in motors is even more a mystery. So, please Scalex! Give us that choice. Put out (after market if needs be) a nice smooth 15,000- 16000 rpm motor that we can snap into your increasingly beautiful little cars. (It's not as if we aren't already spolit for choice with 20,000 to 30,000 rpm plus speedsters.) Oh well, I started this in 2007 and its now 2008. Guess my own motor is already easing off a few notches. Time to have a drink and stop banging on . . . Looking forward to seeing the Scalex newbees. I'm sure they'll be up to the usual high standard appearance-wise, great to run on their lonesome and almost good enough, indeed temptingly good enough, to race. Cheers and a Happy 2008 C57 |
