hi
i have used some of the scaley tune up parts,The 3mm axle fouled the motor housing and had to be ground down(sidewinder) and the gears need to be pushed onto a knurled insert.

The gears were noisy and even though you get a good selection you are limited to what will mesh, because the 2 mounting points are fixed.

I purchased 2 30,000 rpm blue motors and neither of them lasted more than a fortnight, the brush gear came loose in both of them.

These hotter motors are of no use to digital users as the chips will only last on motors upto the yellow can 20,000rpm variants..

Im in the same camp as others on here, a good attempt to sell un-used parts,i am a scaley fan and my modest collection contains nothing else.

As an SSD user, me and my fellow racers look forward to buy this. I am not afraid to use the 25k motor and saloon chip, especially non magnet. Or get the Slot It chip (If/when available). But, probably the 20K will do on our home circuits.
Setting your car up for a next race will be a new chapter for our modest racing club of 4-6 racers, and our first step into tuning. I think Scalextric has found a great way to get rid of the sur plus of parts, and in the end benefit of It. I don't blame them, can't wait to do the first shake down smile.gif

I think the idea is great. Providing a tuning kit is so much better for beginners than crashing around a website not knowing what to order. Shame there are problems though. It should have been thought out a little better than that.

Finally Scaley do a white kit so you can livery it yourself. A nice selection of decals would be good to go with it.

Very nice offer to enable Hornby to get rid of parts they can't sell.....but a poor deal for anyone wishing to race.....The wheels I've seen have been poor the tyres are silicone!...banned in a lot of Clubs and the motors are very poor quality the three I've tried all having failed within a very short time of installation.

I really don't know who sets Scalextric's product strategy but whoever intoduced a range of tuneup parts to a size not universally accepted as the standard just doesn't have a clue as to what is going on....If they sorted themselves out over this and a common digital standard just think how they could perform....

Regards

Alan

I think the 7-15 year old comment is interesting - this seems like something my son (9 years old) might enjoy putting together, and be an introduction to tuning cars and what can be done with motors and gears.

(He was after a Scalextric DBR9 around xmas, I talked him into a Ninco McLaren which has turned into his favourite car.)

I think I'm getting the hang of blueprinting, but tuning not so much.
I'm thinking he can learn, and then teach his old man.

I was thinking of getting one myself, but having read all the above comments about non-standard parts, etc. I now have doubts.

Can I please ask someone to explain, in plain terms, as to what is wrong with the kit provided?

hi
you will not need to invest in gear pullers to have a play with the scaley tune up range, the pinions can be pushed on and pulled of quite easily by hand. thumbsup.gif

My understanding is that since the axle size is not common, the complaint is that the parts in this kit can't be used on other cars.

There is nothing wrong with the kit if you're starting out tuning and would like to experiment a bit. If you stick to the Scalextric parts you are fine.

If you want to start mixing parts with other brands, then you may have issues.

For example, Slot.it, MB Slot, Sloting Plus, Ninco, SCX and NSR use 2.38 mm (3/32") axles and thus their wheels, bearings and gears would fit 2.38 mm axles and not 3 mm axles.

Scalextric has always tried to differentiate itself from other brands and often adopts standards that are not in line with the competition. Sometimes that is to their advantage, sometimes not.

hi
from memory the axle is 3mm and if these kits come with the roller bearings rather than the brass bushes they are a nice set up.

I am sure this is true, many retailers brought stock of "tuning " parts only to get caught with it or to sell it to customers who did not know it would not fit with other parts in the cars. So they did not re order so Scalex must have a large stock some where to clear.
