Brit Slot Nut , Coopdevil, Yazoo - your tracks are added now. That's a round dozen now on the map!

Please bear in mind that I am using the postcode to define location in Google Maps. This is not entirely accurate - a matter of a few doors up or down the street in an urban area, but perhaps quite a stretch on a rural road. So if you think that placeholder is not in quite the right position, let me know and I will endeavour to correct it.

Of course, if you can see any mistakes the in the entries I have made, or want me to put in additional information, just let me know.

David

I've just found this thread. What a good idea. It must be pinned.

Could you add my club to the map? And the one I race at in Gubbio. I'll give you the details if so.

Graham,

It is pinned. And I'm talking to Doug about embedding the map on a page that is more easily accessible.

My intention was to cover the UK, not to map the world...but I'd like to help you as you have helped me in the past thumbsup2.gif (track building over Chrimbo, ho-ho).

There is a technical issue with putting addresses in non-UK countries on Google Maps. The UK postcode is a pretty precise indicator of geographical position - that is not the case with many five-digit postcodes. You have to edit the location by moving the placemarker to the specific point on the map.

Originally I set the map up so that anyone could add their own details, but that soon led to untraceable errors. So I now do the entries myself - not an enormous undertaking, but the world.....you can see that I don't want to create an open-ended work programme for myself! What I could do is write a very short set of instructions for people who want to add entries. I could then give them permission to edit the map individually by email.

However I can't help feeling it would be better to create individual maps by nation, as the vast majority of enquirers are going to be looking within their own country. It would be possible for SF to hold an index of map pages by nation in a similar fashion to the clubs forum. These individual maps can then also be embedded into websites, like ItaliaSlot. Then the presentation would look like this.

What do you think?

There is now a link to this map at the top of the Clubs section and on the Resources page.

Many thanks to David for putting it together, I think that it's a wonderful resource.

I think that if someone from the US would like to do one, chat to David and see how it works and we can embed it too. Likewise, I think that other national maps are best managed by people from those countries so talk to David and contact me and I'm sure we could piece together a World-wide resource.

My pleasure Paul. And Martin, Quorn is on the map now too.

Doug has put the map on SF at the top of the clubs forum and also on the resources page. So there is good visibility for it.

14 clubs so far - any more takers? At the moment I haven't the time to systematically contact clubs which don't volunteer, but I aim to do this over the Christmas holiday - as a break from home track reconstruction. But I can deal with one-off requests pretty quickly.

David

Hello All,

We get many visitors from the UK to Thailand. May I offer up our club, the Bangkok Slot Car Club, to the list?

And one of these days, maybe we'll get Lim and Nigel from Malaysia to visit our fine city, and vice versa.

As I said to Graham I think it would be better to create individual maps by nation, as the vast majority of enquirers are going to be looking within their own country. It would be possible for SF to hold an index of map pages by nation in a similar fashion to the clubs forum. These individual national maps can then also be embedded into other appropriate websites, such as ItaliaSlot.

Here are some basic instructions for creating a national Slot Car Racing Map:

1. You need a gmail account to create a map. So if you haven't got one, sign up at google.
2. Go to google maps - maps.google.co.uk
3. Click on My Maps in google maps and select Create a New Map
4. When you've created a map click on the edit button on the left hand panel
5. Type a postcode in the search bar
6. When it appears, click on it and in the pop-up window, select Save to My Maps
7. In My Maps click on the placemark and add information
8. When you've created and saved your map it has a unique URL which you can access and copy from Link on the top right of the screen
9. You can choose to make the map public or private, and you can control it yourself, make it completely public, or select collaborators who can also post after you email them from within the map
10. You can also use this link to access and copy the HTML code and embed it in another web page, as I have done for the SF page and also on the Wellingborough club page
11. The software is great, but not without its idiosyncracies - the Wellingborough postcode does not position the placeholder perfectly, so I moved it physically on the map (which the software allows), but then the embedded HTML code does not allow the map to be scaled or moved! A problem I still have to resolve...

The help documentation on the site is also very helpful, at least at a beginner level - that's as far as I have gone.

I'll also add these instructions into a new thread, How to Create a National Map of Slot Car Clubs, to make it easier to find in the future.

If you do create a national map. Please send me a link and I'll embed it into our site. I may then put up a small World map linking to the various national maps.

16 tracks now listed on the map - Mussel Bay and Home Farm being the latest. Have a look, try it out - and then PM me with details of YOUR track!
