I don't know if I should have put this here or in the tracks section but anyway....

I occasionally host a slotcar night for my 1:1 Motor Club (Clwyd Vale MC) and for the next night I wanted to run a couple of rally stages using at least two tracks.

I'll be using my "Under the Sofa Track" and a plastic track but as I needed to minimise the space taken up by this, I decided to make some rally loops:

I started by cutting up some spare MDF and routed the loop

Then I cut out the recess for the Scalextric sport track.

The Scaley track was hot glued, epoxyed and nailed in (better safe than sorry!), then the plastic track was blended to the MDF with bodyfiller.
Then the whole board was painted with tile adhesive and a scrap car run over it to get clean the copper tape area and provide some "muddy rut" texture.

Close ups of the "ruts".

The finished article copper taped and with finished paint and scenery.

I've still got to scenery the second one but I've tested them and they work well but there's more grip on the loops that on the Scaley Sport track, even though there's obviously no mag on the loops (I leave the magnets in on the club cars).

Cheers for looking, Stu

Well done!
I've been imagining making small custom routed bits to include in our rug racing. I've seen one or two other examples on SF, but this is easily the most complete "tutorial" style example. Thanks for sharing, and do please show us any others you make! smile.gif

that looks really good. Ive imagined doing something similar in the past using pieces of old sport track, but wasnt sure if things needed wiring or not? obviously your work shows how simple it really is.

I like the ruts, are they ok or do they make the cars bump out?

Chances are I've written this message using my mobile blackberry. If this is the case then what is written above might be full of spelling errors, random letters, badly laid out and generally a load of old rubbish - so no different from usual then :)

The ruts are really quite small and don't seem to upset the cars at all, I'll post a vid up as soon as I've finished it.

One thing to remember is to drill a hole through the MDF so that you can press the locking tab that's inside the loop (wonder how I figured that out!)

No wiring is required, but I have wrapped the copper tape around the pins and tucked it into the sockets on the Sport tracks rails. The kids and I have been using it most of the afternoon with no connection problems.

The main thing to be careful with when making these is where the track rails join the MDF. I trimmed the plastic track surface back to leave about 1cm of rail hanging out and cut grooves with a Stanley knife alongside the routed slot to press the edge of the rail into and a recess in the side of the slot (Sport rails are n shaped).
I epoxyed the rails to the MDF and then bodyfillered the edge of the slot and sanded it flush so that the guide flags don't catch. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of that as my hands were covered in epoxy by then!

Phil B - go for it, just post some pics when it's done!

I've read your posts about the slot rallying competitions, and I'd love to come down to one sometime but I'll have to convince the missus to let me.
It's hard enough to get permission for my real rallying never mind the "toy cars" as she calls them!

PoloStu, if your going down let me know i'm only in Mold and i'll come with you. I used to do the real rallying until I knackered my back. I would love to have a look at slot rallying.

Gentlemen you are more than welcome! I used to do a bit of "real" rallying until I couldn`t afford it any more, this is cheap and you get to drive Historics and WRC etc all on the same day.

I like that idea, very good. clap.gif I used to have some slot rallying gear including a set of the Ninco loops with Ninco-to-Classic converters. With a Sport track, I had the exact same effect of the loops being more grippy than the main track, magnet or otherwise.

If one doesn't mind cutting up some sport track, there are several configurations that work fine using sectional track.
