Firstly - don’t forget that you can run our club cars for free all year round.

However, you might want to get your own car so you can get to know it and learn how to keep it tuned up and running well. You’ll probably get better results in the races. In this thread we'll be posting tips, reviews and links to cars that can be used competitively at WHO Racing events.

On the questionnaire we sent out, I suggested that you can run your own cars in both classes for as little as £11.

This would mean buying a Tyco 440X2 F1 chassis, a set of silicone tyres plus an F1 body and a closed wheel body that fits the F1 chassis (Corvette, Lamborghini or Ferrari F40). There are two ways of doing this for £11:

Option 1. We can buy a lightly used Corvette Tyco 440X2 for £5 from Tony's HO Racing Ahead shop at the next EAHORC national event (It’s £6 on Tony's HORA website). Add a pair of .434 silicone tyres for £1.50. We can source new F1 / Indycar bodies for £4.50 each. Total= £11.

Option 2. Buy a used McLaren F1 or Ferrari F1 Tyco 440X2 from Tony at HORA for £8. Add a pair of .434 silicone tyres for £1.50 and a Corvette body for £1.50. Total= £11 (plus P&P if you buy direct from Tony).

We would recommend painting up your car bodies – the Corvette bodies come in dayglo colours and the IndyCar bodies are all the same livery – black (not great to see on a black track!).

The Tyco is currently the best option for the F1 class. It has brilliant road-holding and decent pace. However, it is just not on the same pace as the Tomy cars that we will race in the modified class – although it could be up there if driven with skill and intelligence. I'm going to run a Tyco in modified and see what happens...

We were talking at the last EAHORC round about the Pro Mod missiles that we run. With the exchange rate not being our friend sometimes and postage they are coming over from the US and working out about £45-55. if you don't automatically assume smaller scale means smaller prices then that is not to bad in terms of being able to compete in a motor racing based hobby.

Nonetheless, the £11 scenario Woodcote sets out is entirely realistic. Another option coming up soon for those who get into their HO EAHORC-style, will be the eagerly awaited AFX Audi R10 and Peugeot 908. For another 2-3 quid you can buy an unpainted open wheel body that will fit the same chassis. This won't work out at £11, but it is the same two-for-one sort of deal.

HO has lots of advantages, the problem has always been and always will be convincing people to overlook the (perceived or otherwise) shortcomings and focus on the upside. Certainly being able to tell prospective members they can get started with their own cars for a tenner and a lotto ticket is a big plus smile.gif

Here's what my HO race car costs are

Modified Car (I'm currently second in the EAHORC modified championship)

Marchon MR-1 Formula 1 car bought from Tony for £8
Tomy Red Wire Motor £2.50 approx
Micro Scalextric Porsche 934 body that I already had
Tyres £1.50

F1 Car
Tyco F1 car £8 from Tony
Tyres £1.50

I'd recomend getting a spare car for each class as well, as mechanical failure is a real pain in the arse, and if you've got a spare car ready to go it makes things easier.

Hello

Just to add. Each time we run the MOD class at WHO Racing the club mod cars will be different each time. Currently between myself and Andy we have Tomy SRT's, Tomy Super G's, Wizzard Patriots and Standard BSRT's. The following months will look like this:

March: Primary class - Mod class - Tomy SRT's
April: Primary class - F1 - Tyco X2
May: Primary class - Mod class - Wizzard Patriots
June: Primary class - F1 Tyco X2
July: Primary class - Super G
August: Primary class - F1 - Tyco X2
September: Primary class - Mod class - BSRT

The idea is that everyone who attends WHO Racing gets to try all the different MOD chassis's available and then in October - November we can all sit down and have a chat about which ones people enjoyed using the most and then build the future of the mod class rules around that. We want to show you all the options before you start spending your money.

If you have bought a TYCO X2 and want to use it on a MOD class night you may but as Andy has mentioned above, you may find yourself a little out gunned by the Who Racing club cars. This would especially apply to May and September as Wizzards Patriots and BSRT's are cars with a bit more go and traction.

If any of you have any questions please e-mail myself and Andy.

That is a very sensible approach.

Hopefully the Mega-G Audi and 908 will be out in the summer, thereby another option, these should look the dogs...

I'll match Tony's generous cost-cutting and say the black F1/Indy bodies will be £4.00.

So that's £10 for both deals cool.gif

The next EAHORC meeting is Kings Lynn on Sunday 21 March, so orders before then please to the club's email address.

Tony is bringing his HO Racing Ahead shop to the EAHORC meeting at the Heene Centre on Sunday 31 October - a good opportunity to buy cars and spares to use in the last two rounds of the 2010 season and get them ready for next year.

He is still doing his £10 race-ready deal on Tyco F1 cars. Tycos have won all our F1 rounds in 2010.

If you'd like advice on putting together a car for our Mod class, I'm sure between us we'll be able to pick out a car and tune-up parts that will do the job smile.gif

We'll also be adding ideas and information on this thread in the build up to Christmas - we know that cars to run at the club will make it on to a few letters to Santa wink.gif

With a six-week WHO Racing winter break coming up, it's time to get those 2011 cars ready for next year's action. Here are my tips:

Formula One

The rules are here.

The Tyco 440X2 (above) is the best all round car in my opinion. Tony at HO Racing Ahead will sell you an F1 car plus silicone rear tyres at a special WHO Racing price of £10.

Faster on the straights but a bit tricky on the corners are the Tomy Super-G+ and Tomy Mega-G. They must be run with the original rubber tyres and the cars are more difficult to source at the moment - but we can help you. The cost for a new car will be between £15 to £20 - but with a swap of rear axle and tyres and a lexan body, these could be run in Mod Class too.

The Tomy Turbo is quick, but is not as good an all-round car as the Tyco. They can be run with silicone rear tyres to help with grip.

The MicroScalextric F1 car is off the pace when it comes out of the box. If you want to run one, let us know...

Modified Class

The rules are here.

You have loads of choice in this class. One thing that we've learned over the past couple of rounds is that a lightweight lexan body will be an advantage. We will have these in the club shop to fit Tomy Super-G+ and Tomy SRT wide cars. With a bit of work, these bodies can be fitted to most chassis.

One source for new Tomy Super-G+ cars and the Tomy SRT wide chassis is Barry's Slot Cars Direct site. Barry also stock spares, unpainted lexan bodies and the body clips to attach the lexans to your Tomy SG+, SRT or Mega-G (the last two use a Turbo clip).

The Life Like T chassis is a fast car, especially with new rear wheels and silicone tyres to make it lower at the back. Tony at HO Racing Ahead will sell you a Life Like T for £14 and Barry at Slot Cars Direct has the latest Life Like cars for £15 plus a good stock of spares. The extra parts (wheels and tyres) add £4 to the price.

We will have a few cars in the club shop too.

Of course you don't have to use a lexan body. There are some stunning new cars being produced on Tomy's Mega-G chassis, including Peugeot and Audi Le Mans cars out this winter. Let us know asap if you would like one of these. We can also get you an F1 body - so it could be run in both F1 and Mod cool.gif

Club cars

Our club cars are always available. In F1 they are Tyco 440x2 cars with silicone rear tyres. In Mod they are BSRT G3 chassis with Tomy Super-G+ parts, a lexan body and silicone rear tyres.

In 2011, you will get a 50p discount on your race fee if you use your own car.

That Peugeot plus a ChampCar body (below) would certainly give anyone the two best looking cars in the club smile.gif

They are broadly the same as EAHORC's, with hard bodies not compulsory and the MG15 not listed as an allowed chassis.

When is the first ECHO race?

I think the first Echo race will be the last Friday in Febuary, I won't be able to confirm until after December 17th, low tech reliable lap counting is sorted, I may well end up using Marchon Porsche 935s as club cars, I think I've got 8 of them, I've got to make a decision about track power, I can either use Tomy power supplies or I've got a box full of regulated 13.8V 1.5A power supplies which I'm considering, I know the cars will be noticeably slower with the lower voltage but with the shortish tracks I'll be running this may work out for the best.

Are you going to be a regular at Colchester, I will run monthly meetings, hopefully last Friday of the month.

From the look of WHO's modified rules they allow open choice of traction magnet in production chassis, if I go for the lower voltage it will make setup more interesting as it will be possible to have too much magnet.
