I will be travelling to Beijing and Shanghai soon and I would like to know if any members could recommend shops where I could buy 1:32 slot cars. Are they selling branded cars like scalextric, scx, ninco etc. in china or is it just for distribution overseas ?

I think SCX opened a shop in Shanghai recently, or was it Hong Kong? I doubt you will find a shop selling a wide selection of makes though.

The Spanish firm Tecnitoys/SCX opened the first shop of its own in the world yesterday, Thursday 15th October, in the Times Square shopping centre in the city of Shanghai, China. With this the Spanish brand has finally arrived on the Chinese market, where it will be expanding gradually with shops of its own or franchises, first in Shanghai, to be followed by Beijing and Hong Kong. The aim of all this is to situate its product at the premium end of the consumer market.

With 70 square metres (over 750 square feet) of floor space, the shop will stock all the SCX product lines, with demonstration tables inside the shop and a larger permanent track outside.

Certainly a bold move.

You are right. Almost all slot cars nowadays are made in China but you cannot find them in the shops. Is it because they are not popular sellers ? Maybe their overseas parent companies does not allow them to release or sell the cars locally. Strange though because other Made in China items are available locally.

Josem,

I think the scheme would be to get a set of knock-off golf clubs in Shanghai, they are everywhere about $200-$250 a set.
Sell them back home at a 'reasonable" price and use the profit to buy slot cars nearer home.

One of the amazing things is you never see back door sales of any of the slot car makes in china.
Back door sales with DIECAST, R/C and home electronics (IPOD ETC) are rife out there .
Has anyone ever seen any for sale through non-official channels ?

If a Western company has things made in China by a sub contractor they will have little control if the sub contractor decides to sell things directly. I believe that Scalextric (Hornby) has their own plant in China. I get the impression that there is little slot racing in China, so I would not expect that many stores would carry cars.

You are right Pete-slot ! We have access to online stores selling R/C, diecast, home electronics aside from mass market stores like Target, Kmart etc. but slot cars sales are limited to Hobby Shops or eBay resellers. The slot car makers have a good stranglehold on the market. This practice artificially inflates the price of slot cars because mass discounters are by-passed. Abarth Mike's idea to buy something that you can sell at home is good so at least you can make something out of your trip.

Just find a slot car factory and do a bit of bin diving at night!
