Okay... I committed to this lunacy of building a 60's F1 car, so I better start a thread - that way I can't easily just disappear without a trace!
Not that JP would let me...

No, no work has started yet, but I received my first box of goodies in the mail this morning, hence the thread start. An order from Patto's, arriving very promptly by Canadian mail standards!
, has convinced me that the MS10 will become reality!

You will need patience however, because it may be some time before major progress is made. Unlike some of the builders, I don't produce quality work in the span of days or hours. Or, as some will say, even quality work for that matter...

Nonetheless, here is the subject I will be trying to portray....

And, thanks to David Lawson, this rare view (in the intended mid-wing configuration)...

But please... when further posts appear, do not expect the calibre of some of the stuff you have seen here!

Stay (patiently) tuned...

...guess I'm in it up to my eyeballs now....

To be honest, I didn't truly realize just how small these 60's F1's really are! Where is the icon for hunting for better glasses?
But yes, there will be some suspension detail.
Details make the car!

Well, JP, as I said before, I was planning a vac-form version of the Matra, so I turned to Patto for the bodies and decals. It was my first order, and though I knew his decals had a good rep, I was leary of the quality of the bodies since I had never seen any. I am, however, quite impressed with the detail on the Matras and now know that they can be turned into reputable looking pieces with good paint and some added details. I also got his Matra decals (of course!), some ball bearings, drill blank axles, resin driver figures, pinions, and Little Ripper motors (though I'm not actually planning to use those for this project.... but they do fit even though the body is exact scale per drawings I have!
)

Another order from Professor Motor will complete my parts acquisitions, though I seem to be having trouble communicating with him...

I can plan the chassis but can't start building since the PM order includes the BWA wheels (of course
), PM's Indy Grip tires, and Slot.it crown gears among other things, so ride height is impossible to determine yet (specs aren't enough
).

Plodding along.... but happy with what I have so far.

Sounds to me like a formidable start - going to have to watch that northern border.

The motor fit points up one of the advantages of a vac-form - a typical 0.010" body thickness versus an average, probably, of 0.050" for a glass body - and, given the dimesions of these cars, an additional 0.080" is signifcant.

Must go around and have a few words with the panel beaters!

On the other hand, given the limited size and rubber on these little beasties, the use of the Little Ripper may result (unless all of the unoccupied space in the body is back-filled with lead shot) in handling "adjustments" being more a matter of calulating a trajectory!

Welcome to the madness!

An understatement! Until I actually had the Matra in my hand, I didn't fully grasp how tiny these old F1 cars really were. Having the drawings in scale wasn't the same as holding the real thing in one's hand (let it go, JP... let it go...
). Looks like my magnifier lamp will be getting a real workout!
Without stretching the body though, I have room for rails as large as 1/16" alongside the lower edge of an S can.

Quite right, EM! Yes, the Little Ripper is a "reserve" choice at the moment. A Fox II was intended for initial tests. The chassis will be heavy for it's size though, so I'll just have to wait and see whether I need to go up or down in power. And, of course, there's one thing to always remember.... I haven't a clue as to what I'm doing in this company!

Hi

As EM can attest, I have a bunch of these cars... as the series is going to be mostly models of real tracks in plastic in my garage(or others), the ripper, I suggest is way too much.

I recommend motors of Rabbit class(or slot it V12/2 or Carrera or Evo3). As an absolute maximum.

One of the local tracks we will be using also has a class for 60s f1s. NOT VERY SCALE, these guys. But the lap record is held by a car with a Sharknose body(airfix..yeech, see what I mean about scale) with an NC1! His straights are only 7 feet on the main with a secondary 6 in a 60 foot length.

Most of the club members run some sort of current MRRC clubman,a nd they all beat this guy down the straight, but he kills them with driveability in the corner. I do not race with these guys(they have been having political problems), but am friends with the owner. I have a car that will run with him. It uses a stock RX41!. So, on that track, power is not the answer.

I have not really tried to dial something into his track. I did a little running with a lotus with a Rabbit in it...and it was fine. But my hotter motors are just undriveable there.

Now, there will be ONE fast track of 125' with monster straight. But the rest will be 12' straights and usually 50-60 feet.

Thanks for the tips, Fate!

I'll dial down my natural tendency to grab too much power - too many years watching Tim Taylor on Home Improvement I guess.
Hmmm.... not sure how to make his classic "urr...urr...urr" grunt for 'more power' in text form...
...apologies to those who have no idea what I'm talking about...

V12 max, eh?.... ok.... looks like I have to re-source a bunch of my stuff anyway....
