I believe inspiration was taken more from the contemporary Toyota 2000 gt, a car whose maker missed the boat in not marketing to the mass American public. Albrecht Goertz was brought in to design the Toyota, and later took his ideas over to Nissan (Datsun) where at least part of the influence for the Z's design came from him. Another big influence was a Mr. Katayama, who promoted in America and oversaw it's naming and pricing. $4k US vs. 7k for the Toyota was a no brainer for the public.
So much for this aside, really nice progress Brian on one of my favorite cars. Those two Astons in the background show some interesting differences.
