Rockingham Slot Car Club are pleased to invite entries for our 1st digital event of 2021 which will be run to DiSCA WEC GT Specification.
The date for your diaries is the weekend of July 17th-18th (Around 10 weeks from now).
Rules can be found at www.officialdisca.com

The event will be a 6 hour endurance race and be open to teams of 2 or more with a maximum of 14 teams.

The event will be run using the usual hand out tyres, 2 sets of N18 and 1 set of F22 compound, these will be available for practice/qualifying on Sunday morning.
There will be no handout motors, we will however be keeping a eye on suspect cars and will be working on the trust of our fellow competitors!
Any suspect cars may be subjected to an RPM test.

Entry fee is £40 per team and entries will be confirmed on receipt of an initial deposit of £10 which can be made via paypal to [email protected]
*NOTE* In the event that Rockingham has to cancel the event due to any Government imposed restrictions all deposits WILL BE REFUNDED.
Deposits paid by any team that "No Shows" WILL NOT BE REFUNDED.
Entry fee remaining balance of £30 per team should be paid on the day.

A full timetable will be announced in due course.

We hope that you're all as keen to get racing as we are.

Cheers.
Nik.

9 weeks to go until the RockBull Ring 6h, we can accommodate 6 more Teams.

Here is the provisional timetable for the event, things will be finalized nearer the time but this will give an idea of how it will run...

Saturday July 17th.
10.30 Doors open
10.45 Firmware updates
11.00 Track opens for free practice
18:00 Club closes

Sunday July 18th.
08:00 Doors Open
08:15 Driver Briefing
08:30 Firmware updates
09:00 Qualifying/Technical Inspection
10:30 Team Rostrum Selection
10:45 Grid Formation
11.00 6 Hours of Rockbull Ring
17.00 Award Ceremony
17:30 Track Breakdown

*NOTE* During Free Practice on Saturday we ask that Teams only use the same tyre compounds that are to be used in the race.
Most of you guys probably have some left over from previous events?
Rockingham has enough N18 and F22 tyres for handout ONLY.
With the advent of Slot.It replacing the N18 with the new G25 compound, we will see what the guys at DiSCA decide for future events.
PLEASE DON'T USE THIS EVENT TO "TEST" G25 TYRES.

Any questions please ask

We shall organise an evening meal on Saturday night.

I've had some suggestions already Chinese, Indian, or Pub for burgers or steaks?

Looking to sit down for 7-7.30 PM That'll leave a few hours for some extra liquid refreshment

Please advise accordingly

John
Hi Nik

Team LLR Covid update:
Got my first vaccin last Saturday, 2nd shot due June 18th so that side will be covered.
Making steady progress on the AMR Vantage(s) GT3 (in WEC spec) hopefully first roll-out on May 30th with SRC Eindhoven expected to be able to re-open its doors...
...so those should be ready come Sunday morning July 18th.

The only thing standing between me and a trip to Rockingham is the red, amber and green list of countries by GOV.UK

On the updated list of this morning 4am Belgium and Holland are still "amber".
Hopefully by June 17th (next expected GOV.UK update) Dutch and Belgium drivers will get the call:

Green, Green, Green!

9 entries now on the board with another 5 places still available.

If anyone wants to shows us your cars for this event please feel free, we have Low Lands Racing's Aston, Garage 27 will most likely give the Wynn's Ford GT it's 1st outing since been built originally for 2020's ill fated Le Mans race, it seems so long ago doesn't it?

Always enjoy your posts, will you be doing a build thread on these Astons ? or wait till after the race before posting info ?
3
Hello r377

Been posting a build report on our Aston since May 3rd, announcement of the 6hrs made by Nik on May 4th, what a coincidence right?
tongue.png

First reaction was to enter with the BMW M8 GTE as it has some unfinished business..but later realized with just 10 weeks till the race....

running the Aston already on the workbench would give us as small (Ad)Vantage.

Post race build reports always a consequence of running out of time, never out fear of revealing too much info pre race

Hi everybody I have an update regarding Firmware.

After a discussion between the Rockingham Organisers we request that teams should perform their own firmware updates BEFORE the event please.

As we have all been away from racing for so long, to put it honestly, we feel that we as a club aren't willing to be held responsible for any possible firmware issues which may possibly arise with individual cars or controllers as we'll have enough to deal with to try and ensure the track system is working correctly.

I have no doubt that we'll be able to offer advice on updating your firmware should you have difficulty but please note that we will not do it for you.

I personally updated my cars using the Slot.it App, I am not a computer wizz by any stretch but after a little coaching I found it to be a doddle to do.

So, here are the up to date firmware versions as we understand it...please correct me if I have got this wrong
thumbsup.gif

A and B Chips......V2.13 (Now unsupported)

B1 Chips..............V3.01 (Now unsupported)

B2 and C Chips...V3.15a (Current)

SCP2 Controller...V3.04 (Most recent)

A note on SCP3 Controllers.

If any teams wish to use an SCP3 we have no real issue with that as long as there are no problems with cars going out of control for any reason.

If any cars on track cause accidents or any other issues arise through use of an SCP3 then ALL TEAMS will be requested to use an SCP2 as normal so please make sure you bring 1.

Nik.
Nik,
I don't think any team ever assumed that the club or organisers were (or are) responsible for the impact of firmware standardisation for an event.
It's always been buyer-beware hasn't it?

Alan (GasMonkeys)
Alan, It's such a time consuming exercise, the task invariably falls on Matt Tucker who can be sat for a couple of hours or more trying to sort out updates for teams with varying degrees of success. I'm sure you've witnessed for yourself and indeed stood in the queue to get firmware updated when you've really just wanted to turn up and race? Our aim is to achieve the latter with as little delay as possible and therefore more on-track time for everybody.

At previous events the word "shambles" was often heard to be muttered. We aim to prevent this from happening in future by making teams responsible for they're own updates.

The only update the club will be responsible for is the Chrono system to run Race Control.

We can't promise a delay free event but we are trying to take steps to get it as good as it can be.

I hope this all makes sense.

Cheers.

Nik.

Situation may improve with the new Slot.it app, latest version 1.5.0 looks promesssing, a minor bug with Blue Tooth cache which can be resolved by switching it on/off. and retry.
Slot.it app in combination with nRF Nordic app (to upgrade firmware to 0315a) means individuals no longer require bootloader/Dongle to keep their chips up to date.

So yes I would agree, we've reached a point were responsibility for correct firmware can be shifted from Organization to entrant(s).
Assistance with firmware given by Organizer always appreciated when troubles arise, but no longer a set "given" obligation for them to fix..

In the case of the Rockingham 6hrs, advise to update your Cars & chips at home, at the hotel or at the local McDonalds
lmfao.gif

As updates via the apps require a good wifi connection to register/login on Slot.it database.
Those who have attended the event know how "good" cellular reception is at Rockingham club premisses

On the other hand, the new bootloader really works very well if you want to link cars to controllers as you can store each controller with a (for example a team-)name in the database, and link it to the car chip that is connected in the bootloader. Also worth cheking the setting for pure oxigen, oxigen-ssd etc for the car chip depending on lane change type in the track.
Hello all, Exiles have asked for ID 18 for Saturday only, I see no problem with this as we have plenty of places available, I assume this is to test either another car or indeed an SCP3?
Still some previous attendees missing from the entry list, with 6 1/2 weeks to go there's still time to enter if you wish too.

Hello guys

Personally I think the decision not to offer firmware is a bad one. If anything I’d expect more help than “normal” seeing as we’ve all been away from it for so long, so this is a bit disappointing to read.

Not everyone has dongles and Slotit software at home to do it themselves. Also consider that if a chip blows and you replace it with one out of the packet it’ll ideally need to be updated. Using Siemens nRF toolbox can also be tricky unless you have an ARC power base, negating the use for magnets, but I’m guessing the club won’t be supplying that either for whatever reason.

I will bring laptop, dongle and ARC power base for easier Bluetooth flashing. Anyone needs firmware, just ask.

Hi gary
Thanks for the offer that will be welcome.
We will have the set up to support firmware changes, using the bootloader, however we won't be offering an official service to do it for teams. Basically even was I was more or less competent at undertaking the updates I found the experience a challenge. Unfortunately a couple of unhelpful comments in the heat of the moment when I was experiencing problems I could not resolve has left a lasting legacy.

I also want to increase team ownership of firmware management, which would help all of us realise it is not a dark art, and support other clubs putting on events without them dreading having to undertake this responsibility, which especially with the ease of updating B2 and C chips I think is reasonable.
My test case was Nik, whom shuts down even if you talk firmware at him, but with a little concentration he managed to update his chips without issue. Told me it was a mental barrier issue.

Some of The key gas monkey equipment is now up to date on firmware.
(Backup) Pair of B1 Chips downgraded to V3.01
Pair of SCP2 Controllers upgraded to V3.04
Synced to id 6
updates were performed using a USB dongle, desktop computer , windows10 and bootloader v2.
The piece that got us over the line ?
Chrono had to be loaded on the PC even though no chrono functions are used in the firmware management process.
Without chrono, the runtime libraries are not found by bootloader.

Graham Eldridge will be working the bluetooth firmware process for the c chip pair.
Here's hoping that everyone can get this process done and that no interventions are needed over the weekend.

We have 2 pairs of n18 tyres for saturday practise.
These are the later slot.it pressing (circa April 2019) that have the mold number 1207 on the sidewall, but not the compound identification. There are no slot.it n18 tyres available at retailers.
