A Lotus Thread

Trisha started a Ferrari thread back in 2021. Well, time for a Lotus thread. After all, not only did Shelby and Ford kick Ferrari’s rear at LeMans, Colin Chapman and Lotus bested Ferrari often in F1 while he was alive.

I’ve been a Lotus fan since I was a teen in the mid/late 60’s. Since I’ve owned 10 1:1 scale Lotus.

I now collect Lotus slot cars almost exclusively, and would love to see what this community has by way of Lotus slot cars. Street cars. Racing cars. F1 and Indy cars. Sports cars. Vintage. Modern. Custom. I’ve got a ton in 1/32 and 1/24 scales.

SF doesn’t have a General Discussion forum, so this will be a thread for all scales. Unless the mods object, of course l

I’ll kick it off with a super rare Scalextric 1/24 Lotus 38. Scalextric produced 1/24 scale sets and cars for two years in the late 60’s. All are pricey now, the Lotus especially so. They have unbelievable detail, look at the rear suspension. This car was likely run, in looking at the pickup braids. For a detailed, fragile car to be this complete is a rarity.

This is photographed on a section of equally rare Scalextric 1/24 scale three lane track.

Show your Lotus slots!

Lotus 30/40, bought in a job lot from South Africa. It was in a racing box (together with around 15 other cars) belonging to the late Jimmy Cramer.

Looks like some seriously thick wire on that armature? :)

And some serious balancing, too!🙀
All the motors in the racing box were seriously tuned. I guess I should try one for fun.

Before I move on to the Type 25 here are a couple of Type 24 I missed.

A pair of 1/43rd, more or less, scale Lincoln International cars made in Hong Kong that came in High Rev set.

Now for some Type 25, I'll start with my smallest and built up in size.

in 1/43rd scale I have a SRM version

Wheel Tire Vehicle Toy Motor vehicle

I also have a Corgi original diecast and the latest re-release from the Corgi Model Club and a couple of models from the Panini F1 Collection.

Just a little bit bigger we have at 1/40th scale a couple of cars from Champion, these were made for Playcraft by Jouef but unlike the Jouef version the Champion cars have the yellow stripe. They also tend to have the engine and exhausts chrome plated.

When I bought this car it was the most I have ever paid for a slot car and it's still in the top three or four. At least it was complete with the box.

And a second one, that was a lot cheaper

The Jouef version of the Lotus came in three different versions.

The original version was the same as the Champion one, but without the stripe and often missing the chrome parts.

The added front wings for the second version.

The third version gained a couple of sockets at the rear

and a rear wing

next up on to 1/32nd scale.....

The Tamiya 1/20th kit motorised with basic Scalextric motor and gears, not very sophisticated but it goes quite well.

About 20/25 years ago I had a phase of building 1/43 kits - here are some Lotus cars.

Outstanding work David! (y)

There's no way you can tell WHAT scale they are looking at the pics. But having got a few 1/43 scale kits myself, my mind is truly boggled!
Thank you Kit, I now have an arthritic right thumb and the beginnings of cataracts so I would struggle with 1/43 scale models now as I am also beginning to have some difficulty with 1/32.

Here are a few more of my Lotus kits.

After the 1/43 scale models here is my original Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 72 that I built in 1973 which has somehow survived fifty years and a couple of house moves largely intact.

Which is more than can be said for my Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 49 that I built in 1968

One day I may attempt to put it back together.

Unusual (and good) to see a photo without the engine cover.
Mike
A great pity, though, that thousands of old racing cars are languishing in museums and garages doing nothing except gathering dust and monetary value. A terrible waste.
