I've harboured passion for Porsche's way of doing things down many decades, and continue to marvel at the many Porsche slot cars we can buy, or build, that make our hobby such an enormously interesting pleasure.

This thread, I hope, will result in 'everything' Porsche - your models, photographs, memories and yarns. And anything else, of course.

All contributions will be of great interest, as usual, and I, therefore, thank you in advance.

A few pics below to start the ball rolling.

I like the Porsche concept of air cooled engines and in particular the large cooling fan, clearly visible sitting atop the 917 which, when the engine barked and burbled to life became but a blurr.

Definitely Martini livery makes cars look better😉
Or.....just the Martini (if you drink enough of them) make any car look better;)

Do you think drinking a gallon of Martini would make a Ford Edsel attractive?
Errr......OK you got me on that one .

Anyways, back to the "A Porsche Thread" subject.

Do you think this guy needs to watch a few more videos on how to start a car before he attempts it again, and especially in front of a crowd?

The title "PORSCHE 917 FAIL" is somewhat misleading as the car didn't fail, wereas this guy in my view most certainly did!!

I just love box art. Didn't realize it at the time, but even as lad I loved it. (I still have vivid memories of the box art of some of the models I purchased as youngster.)

Andre
My nose used to be flatter as a kid.....from having it pressed up against the local Model shop front and side windows every Saturday morning during the weekly family shopping trip.
This was more hazardous in the colder months as you could quite easily freeze your proboscis to the very cold window and be stuck there for a while until it thawed.

Every week there were new boxes on display with the latest release race car, plane, ship, figure, engine etc including live "oo" railway engines and carriages criss-crossing various track layouts, purpose built for window display.

Nearly always the items of most interest to me were those fabulous kits depicting some dramatic racing image or scene involving the model in action on the box lid.
They were always so well portrayed they were enough to capture most kids (including mine) imagination for hours and days on end until the next visit, or if you were really lucky, your Birthday or Christmas arrived and one of your "favourites" (there were so many), would magically find its way into some wrapping paper which was always eagerly removed, allowing you to gawp at the new contents.

Now you only have to click "Buy Now" and its yours within a Postal delivery cycle!!

Flying off at a tangent, this thought crossed my mind:

Wouldn't it be a great idea if Box art could be introduced again on kits. Slot car kits.
Not merely a photo but proper box art. Gawping could become a thing again (minus the frost bitten nose).

There are an abundance of artistic depictions here by Trisha which would look perfect adorning a suitable Latest Hornby Airfix/Scalextric release "build it yourself 1:32 scale slot car kit" of a Porsche 903, 904, 906, 908/3, 917, 956, 962 basically as many Porsche as possible (this is a Porsche thread afterall ;))".
The main body and chassis being moulded and produced in-house by Hornby Airfix and the remaining items to complete the slot car model produced by Scalextric as a complete slot car kit package?
And the icing on the cake........manufactured in the UK? (avoiding the costly and lengthy shipping lead times and creating some much needed jobs as we recover from the Covids).

Maybe when I win the Lottery, I'll buy Hornby and do my Jean Luc Picard impression and....."Make it So"

At each new Scalextric model release I check to see if it is available in a slot car kit form, and then hop over to the Airfix site to see if there was any news regarding a possible release of the model as a static kit for possible conversion, but alas, no such luck just wishful thinking/hoping on my part.

Manufacturers appear to produce (White) kits of their models and spares of their main slot cars for us to assemble/finish/mod/tweak/hone etc but I can't remember seeing many recent slot car kits from Scalextric/Airfix. Maybe I didnt look hard enough.
Anyways,
I know I would certainly be interested in buying any Hornby Scalextric/Airfix produced Porsche model slot car bodies/ kits (and others with similarly gorgeous curvy lines) provided they were of sufficiently high standard of moulding/scale/finish and comparable to other manufacturers offerings, but made in the United Kingdom, not China, AND.........
containing the all important hand drawn Box art!!

Maybe a bit of SFI Hornby Airfix/Scalextric Consumer Survey/feedback could be undertaken to see if there's any interest here, apart from mine, in a far wider selection of 1:32 scale Airfix/Scalextric UK manufactured Porsche slot car model kits utilising Trisha's "Box Art"?
(Any one from Hornby/Scalextric?)

What better way to start the day (any day for that matter) than "A-Porsche-Thread", fresh brewed steaming hot black coffee, a few videos of two gorgeous 1:1 models playing sweet Porsche "music" with a "video bomb" by a 917 in the second video (I don't think even Bach or Wagner could have written anything so beautiful), followed by a few pics of another car in my garage with live footage from the actually race it won.

Enjoy:
(text in parentheses courtesy of original YT poster)
Crank up the volume,

"1967 Porsche 910 (chassis number 910 013)".

"Porsche 908 LH. The car should be chassis number #004 which raced in the 1968 Monza 1000 km by Ludovico Scarfiotti and Gerhard Mitter. The car is one of the few 908 LH ("Langheck" which means "Long Tail" in german) that originally was built with a steel chassis instead of the aluminium one".

My Vic Elford/Gerard Larrousse Porsche 908/3 which finished 1st at the 1971 Nurburgring 1000 Km, accompanied by actual footage of the race:

The YT video intro comment makes interesting reading apart from the first line listing Derek Bell and Jo Siffert as the winners when in fact actual winners were Vic Elford and Gerard Larrousse in the No 3 Martini Porsche 908/3.
Amazing Footage!

Hope you enjoyed.

Cheers,
Martin

Many thanks for your post above. I especially enjoyed the beautiful 910. Who could ever tire of the sight and sound of that wonderful machine?

I raced my slot version last night during our weekly meeting on the Mess. Most enjoyable. View attachment 281623 View attachment 281624
You're very welcome Laurence.

I'm sad to say I don't have either a 910 or 908 LH in my garage currently, or even a plastic kit to convert but have them both on my "wish/shopping lists".
I hope you had an enjoyable if not successful race last evening which should be replicated as often as possible, the same for the 1:1 vehicles, as it is even sadder to see them confined to a shelf or museum gathering dust.

Cheers.

Amazing depiction of speed and a body in motion. Nice work.

I shudder to think of the forces transmitted through axles, driveshafts, suspension units, gearbox, engine etc and more jarringly the poor driver when rubber makes contact once again with tarmac.
(I drove a Go-Kart at Silverstone many years ago and my spine never recovered!)

Raining cats and dogs here also right now, but my bike riding is consigned to a training roller in the lounge as riding on the roads especially around here is like playing Russian roulette.....with 6 bullets in the gun!!
I dabbled in my younger years with a little Club racing/TT but knee problems curtailed that. Kept my made to measure original bike though (Dave Lloyd Campagnolo GS 1981/82) plus a later Trek 1.7 full shimano 105.
I look a picture in lycra shorts now, so just as well I don't venture out I suppose!

All this rain made me think of Noah and his Ark and the animals being led in two by two.

Ok so no animals but still two by two, Scalextric Porsche 962's in this case:

Wow! Thats what I suppose would be, nearly mint condition cars, I do not fancy too much old Scaley cars but these are really well conserved! Congrats mate.

Cheers
Many thanks GDSLOT.
They were in much poorer condition when I first bought/received them but after an initial clean to remove major dust and grime, complete disassembly, washing everything (apart from motor and wiring/lights/pcb) in hot soapy water, I found that a very light application of Autoglym Super Resin Polish (for fear of removing tampo printing) really helped the shine and finish come up to what you see in the photos. Plus the usual repairs to lights/wires etc.
I keep them in a glass cabinet when not being run on the track, with a light dust with a microfibre cloth every so often so that helps keep them in reasonable condition.

A final few Scalextric Porsche 962's (unless/until I buy more of course), some have poor paintwork which could either be repaired or completely stripped and refinished with a new paint scheme/livery.
Depends upon finding correct decal sets as these were originally tampo printed from Scalextric not decal etc so I haven't decided yet.
Mirrors, wheel trims/ducts lights etc appear to be readily available for restoration back to original condition if finish isn't too bad but if like the Toshiba No 24 side panels/cowling, sometimes its just too far gone.

The coupé version of the RS 718 at Le Mans, 1961, driven by Jo Bonnier and Dan Gurney. It gave up in the twenty third hour with a broken crankshaft, and was parked outside a rather nice, and typically French, shed.

Another rarity as a slot model. View attachment 281779
Laurence,
An interesting photo which very much reminds me of the "Combat Dealers" TV programme with host Bruce Crompton, travelling to France/Europe in search of all kinds of historic (WWII military) vehicles some astute Frenchman/Farmer happened to seclude in said shed or farm outbuilding when no one happened to be looking.
If pictured vehicles wherabaouts happen to be "unknown" right now, it may be worth taking a trip to France to have a rummage in the back of said shed/building if permitted to and not run off by farmer with a rusty pitchfork, as there may be a dusty gem in hiding just waiting to be found!

I fully understand Laurence,
It certainly is a loveable little beauty (as yet, never run).

Just a question about said model 908/3 No.20 which you may be able to answer, or GDSLOT who showed a photo of one in a recent thread entry, are the wheels and tyres on this particular model meant to be all one, as my front and rear tyres appear to be plastic and not rubber booted as the others in my Fly garage, and are "fused" to the plastic wheels?

I am unable therefore to run it on my Scalextric track in its current form.
Plastic on plastic is a recipe for disaster as well as repair.

Are the plastic tyres intended to come off the current wheels I have, to be replaced by rubber tyres, or do I need new wheels as well and if so are they still available?

I have only seen Fly Classic tyres available (as seen on Pendle PSR site):
BRM Fly classic front rubber tyres 20x9.5mm ref s-118
BRM Fly classic rear rubber tyres 21.3x12mm. ref s-119s
But no 5 spoke wheels in black specific for Porsche 908/3.

Any advice would be more than welcome.

Many thanks Trisha and GDSLOT for your suggestions, both very helpful.
An interesting example of a modified lightweight Porsche 911 with more holes than a Swiss cheese (plus some other nice examples of various Porsche 1:1 models).

Hi Laurence,
Hope All is well with you.

That snow looks OK to me but to some here (UK), especially those operating the Railways, it definitely looks like the "wrong" kind of snow!! Same excuse for poor service in the Autumn when the "wrong" kind of leaves fall on the track, or Summer when it's apparently too hot so they only run at 20 mph.
I think someone needs to put their foot down, give them a virtual slap and explain to them the Trans-Siberian, Australian Rail or Amtrak appear to be able to operate under significantly higher or lower temperatures and conditions, stop skiving and get back to work!

Anyways, I was interested to see your recent purchase of the Arii Porsche kit and wondered, if you had not already chosen a colour scheme already, a suitable 1:1 model similar, apart from wheels, to Keith's suggestion in an earlier post, could in fact be the Porsche Mr. Steve McQueen drove in the opening scene of Le Mans.

Apart from the fact I think it is a simple but absolutely stunning looking car, it's colour fits your taste and the theme is very much in accordance with both Le Mans and the great era of Porsche.

Attached some photos of Porsche 911s S-B 2795 to pique your interest.

Cheers,
Martin

The things they say, eh?

Scribbling online today, Ewan Gale ( who?) questions Porsche's credentials to come up to scratch as partners with RBR. He writes: "Porsche's recent history in top-level motor sport saw just a short, expensive but successful stint in LMP1..." View attachment 313801
I can only shake my head in despair with a look of incredulity at this report Laurence.

I think it is a sign of the times and sadly the shape of things to come.

It is little wonder "hacks" make such ill informed comments because they didn't search hard enough for the truth or the facts. They may even re write history and tell us Porsche never existed!!

As one famous person is purported to have uttered in times of old,

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do", (or in this case say)
(Luke 23:34).

We are left with few other options.
