The driver in your 908/3 is Jo Siffert. Pedro had two competitive outings in the car during 1971, namely, the Targa Florio with Herbie Muller (retired after a crash), and the Nurburgring (second).

In July, 1971, Pedro was suddenly gone. Another tragic accident during an Interserie race in the 512 at the Norisring. Jo Siffert died in the BRM at Brands Hatch during the same year.

Another senseless crash in 1971 also claimed the life of Ignazio Giunti in a 312.

Most kind of you Laurence, as always, you know things and how to tell a good story😉, even if it’s tragic. So 1971 was a sad year for Motorsport, at least they died doing what they loved, that’s also why I respect too much all those old drivers that still walk among us, Marko, Stewart, Ickx…

Thank you, Daniel. Regrettably I recall each and every occasion of tragedy in those days, but try not to dwell on them for too long. I've watched several accidents on YouTube in recent times in an attempt to understand how they happened, and have found them most upsetting.

Contemporary press reports, understandably, were sketchy, but I'm glad that lessons were learned and that motor racing's safety record is now commendably excellent.

As I'm sure you know your compatriot, Pedro Rodriguez, became a devoted Anglophile during his time at BRM and the Gulf Porsche team. He could often be seen arriving at a race meeting wearing an immaculate tweed jacket, cavalry-twill trousers, highly polished brown shoes and even a deer-stalker hat.

I'm so glad he never met my uncle Bonkers; I fear they'd have got on disturbingly well together. Had Pedro lived he'd have had a most unhealthy appetite for Scotch, too.

Pedro! Still greatly missed.

Nothing has changed my view in decades that one of the great pleasures of motor racing is early morning practice. Peaceful landscapes are suddenly shattered by raucous engines, popping, banging and whooping before coughing, spluttering and 'ceckng' to clear their throats - nothing quite like it.

All the same today. Another grey dreary day has dawned and I've enjoyed my Fly 906 around the Mess. Most cathartic. And tranquility has resumed after the daily Force 10 for having left undone those things that ought to have been done...

Ne'er mind, eh?
