Not my car, but I think the little Scalextric 550 is a wonderful little car. For some reason it's I find its simplistic charm quite appealing:

Last night I missed out on my first ever Scalextric bid (sniped at the last second), and yes, it was a 550 (the red one pictured below) that looked very nice. I intended to use it as a "test car" to see how Scalextric did things "back then" (I know nothing about the workings of vintage Scalextric), as well as seeing how its performance would be once cleaned/etc. That all done, it would have to pass the SF test. (The "Smile Factor" test: That is, to see if it puts a smile on my face when running it about the track.)

I think Pace has shown we need more slot 924s.
Andre, if the 550 has the old open can Triang train motor in good condition it will be quick down the straights and with good tyres, a pleasure on the bends/curves/chicanes. The simple design of old Scalextric cars gives them a lot of charm aesthetically in my opinion.

I do hope I like what I see and "feel" once I have one on the track. There are several vintage Scalextric cars I would be interested in owning and running/play racing. I like almost all of the Scalextric vintage roadsters, some of their GT's, and almost all of their front engine GP's. Lastly, I like some of their early 60s rear engine GP's.
However, for now I'm trying to gather up the Strombecker cars of interest... but I tried to get that 550! Just wasn't to be at this time.

Anyways, back to the "A Porsche Thread" subject.
Do you think this guy needs to watch a few more videos on how to start a car before he attempts it again, and especially in front of a crowd?
The title "PORSCHE 917 FAIL" is somewhat misleading as the car didn't fail, wereas this guy in my view most certainly did!!

Thanks, Martin, for the 917 video. I have quite a lot of evidence exhibiting the cost of repairing and replacing components made in Zuffenhausen and Weissach.
It makes for 'amusing' reading. A 917 gearbox... Hmmm! Mildly funny. A 917 crankshaft... slightly hilarious...
A 917 engine and gearbox... Utterly hysterical. As is the waiting list. As are the people who work in the accounting offices. A laugh a minute at Porsche, and little wonder, eh?

or at least that's how it arrived, now fitted with a can motor using the Super Shells adaptors and vintage nylon inline crown gear. I also had to change the rear axle and wheels as I just could not get the rear wheels to lock

I just love box art. Didn't realize it at the time, but even as lad I loved it. (I still have vivid memories of the box art of some of the models I purchased as youngster.)

My nose used to be flatter as a kid.....from having it pressed up against the local Model shop front and side windows every Saturday morning during the weekly family shopping trip.
This was more hazardous in the colder months as you could quite easily freeze your proboscis to the very cold window and be stuck there for a while until it thawed.
Every week there were new boxes on display with the latest release race car, plane, ship, figure, engine etc including live "oo" railway engines and carriages criss-crossing various track layouts, purpose built for window display.
Nearly always the items of most interest to me were those fabulous kits depicting some dramatic racing image or scene involving the model in action on the box lid.
They were always so well portrayed they were enough to capture most kids (including mine) imagination for hours and days on end until the next visit, or if you were really lucky, your Birthday or Christmas arrived and one of your "favourites" (there were so many), would magically find its way into some wrapping paper which was always eagerly removed, allowing you to gawp at the now contents.
Now you only have to click "Buy Now" and its yours within a Postal delivery cycle!!
Flying off at a tangent, this thought crossed my mind:
Wouldn't it be a great idea if Box art could be introduced again on kits. Slot car kits.
Not merely a photo but proper box art. Gawping could become a thing again (minus the frost bitten nose).
There are an abundance of artistic depictions here by Trisha which would look perfect adorning a suitable Latest Hornby Airfix/Scalextric release "build it yourself 1:32 scale slot car kit" of a Porsche 903, 904, 906, 908/3, 917, 956, 962 basically as many Porsche as possible (this is a Porsche thread afterall
)".The main body and chassis being moulded and produced in-house by Hornby Airfix and the remaining items to complete the slot car model produced by Scalextric as a complete slot car kit package?
And the icing on the cake........manufactured in the UK? (avoiding the costly and lengthy shipping lead times and creating some much needed jobs as we recover from the Covids).
Maybe when I win the Lottery, I'll buy Hornby and do my Jean Luc Picard impression and....."Make it So"
At each new Scalextric model release I check to see if it is available in a slot car kit form, and then hop over to the Airfix site to see if there was any news regarding a possible release of the model as a static kit for possible conversion, but alas, no such luck just wishful thinking/hoping on my part.
Manufacturers appear to produce (White) kits of their models and spares of their main slot cars for us to assemble/finish/mod/tweak/hone etc but I can't remember seeing many recent slot car kits from Scalextric/Airfix. Maybe I didnt look hard enough.
Anyways,
I know I would certainly be interested in buying any Hornby Scalextric/Airfix produced Porsche model slot car bodies/ kits (and others with similarly gorgeous curvy lines) provided they were of sufficiently high standard of moulding/scale/finish and comparable to other manufacturers offerings, but made in the United Kingdom, not China, AND.........
containing the all important hand drawn Box art!!
Maybe a bit of SFI Hornby Airfix/Scalextric Consumer Survey/feedback could be undertaken to see if there's any interest here, apart from mine, in a far wider selection of 1:32 scale Airfix/Scalextric UK manufactured Porsche slot car model kits utilising Trisha's "Box Art"?

Some very interesting reading, there Zippy! I suspect many of us have similar memories of the hobby shops of our youth.
Also, I'll bet there were (are) more than two of us here that used to stare longingly at the models with imagination-stirring box art thereon.
So Trish paints those evocative Porsche-inspired paintings I'm seeing in this thread? Wow. I'm impressed. (AND, make that three of us that like box art!)
As for Porche, I've always liked the 904. Very elegant lines for a GT. However, of late, I've noticed that the Porsche 550 and the RS series roadsters capture my imagination more than the 904. Further, IF I were to spend hobby money to acquire another 1/32 Porsche slot car, it would be spent on acquiring a vintage Scalextric 550!

Model box art started to disappear when certain countries introduced laws that the packaging had to show the actual contents and not an impression. Which is why you started to get boxes with a photo of the made up model, but unpainted, on the box lid.
