Alfa Romea tz2 from fly

Good morning all,

the car arrived yesterday and I will definitely have to go for a new chassis, tyres and all of the internal components. I love the model, it is beautiful. The problem is the execution of the parts that are supposed to take the car around a track. The tyres have heavy mold lines and the rubber won't be made to grip even if I were to sand them them down. For being a fly car I think the gears mesh up pretty well and the stub axles are looking ok. The look of the car is amazing though. I have already ordered a chassis from shape ways for a cobra Daytona and will see how it holds up before ordering a new chassis for this one. I will then post an update here. But here are some pictures of the car

If you've ordered an Olifer chassis for a Revell Cobra Daytona, I fear you will be disappointed. I bought one a while ago and the wheelbase is too short by approx 1mm, bringing the rear wheels too far forward to sit nicely within the wheel well. You can make the chassis work, but the stance of the car will look naff. I abandoned mine and instead grafted a Slot.it pod directly into the original Rev/Mon chassis.

However, it just so happens that I'm occupying myself during isolation by fitting an Olifer chassis to a Fly Alfa Romeo TZ2. For this model, Olifer's chassis fits nicely.

I'd urge caution before ordering a Slot.it kit. Yes, it's a bit cheaper than the sum of its parts, but you don't get to choose exactly the parts you want.

For my Fly/Olifer hybrid, I wanted to use tyres that look realistic in profile, and NSR Classics have a much taller and more realistic profile than the Slot.it equivalent. Similarly with the kit motor mount and wheels. I don't know what, if any, offset the kit's motor mount has, but having trial fitted everything from 0.0mm, 0.5mm and 1.0mm offset pods, to my eye the best looking combination is a 0.5mm pod, 15.8mm wheels (which are a tiny fraction larger in visible diameter than the Fly originals) and NSR 20.5x10 rear tyres (NSR's Ford P68 originals I think). I haven't decided upon front tyres yet.

I'm in the process of machining the original Fly wheels to use as inserts. Front wheels are Slot.it 15.8x8.2x1.5. Rears 15.8x8.2x2.5 with the part of the boss that protrudes into the wheel centre and gets in the way of the insert machined shorter by 1.55mm, which allows the insert to sit nicely in the correct position.

No photos yet of the finished car, but working on it makes a nice diversion from wall-to-wall virus news on the radio and TV.

Alwyn, my 3/32" reamer is tapered.

The tip is smaller, it isnt 3/32" all the way but gets to the spec dimension mid way along.

I use both of these reamers for different purposes as you probably realise.

so this project is way more complicated than anticipated. But I just got the parts I ordered and assembly has started. Before that I finished the cobra. All except for the new interior.
The chassis I bought was a millimeter to short and the plastic was to thin at the back. So I had to glue some plastic card to the chassis in order to lift the body of the chassis. I managed to fit some nsr rims on the back and I have some pcs rims fitted to the front. After that I painted the wheel inserts and the cobra is running like a dream. Next step will be the interior of the car.
