Alfa Romea tz2 from fly

Good day,

I decided to finally buy an alfa Romea tz2 from fly. I love the look of the car, but I don't think I will be able to digitize it, due to the engine being up front. I am considering buying the following chassis: https://www.shapeways.com/product/LQH6ZZE2H/1-32-fly-alfa-romeo-tz2-chassis-for-slot-it-pod?optionId=60542484&li=shops

I don't know what parts to buy after that or what parts will even fitt.

So my this is not so much of a precise question as a Help post. I would love to get some of your thoughts about the chassis and what parts to buy after.

Thanks for reading (and helping)
Best regards
Robert

You'll want a slot it in line motor pod either long can or a s can (original motor will fit in this) pod. You can also get a slot it rear axle kit which will fit. You'll need to cut the interior down for all of this to fit in or just cut a bit of card or plastic to make a tray and just pop the drivers head on it.

Thank you! Yes I would like to exchange the rear axle. I have several fly models and none with the original axle. What distance and so on should I look for. Is there a way to figure out what kind of axle and rims I need for these kind of things?

Best regards
Robert
I'd go for 15.8 rims 19x10 tyres then a 27t crown gear (black) that's the normal size for them cars I think off the top of my head. Using a 0.0 off set pod can drive one that is.

And you will need to modify the cockpit as there is not enough room.An alternative is to setup

the existing chassis, check the link in my signature
Personally, I'd be looking at sourcing a cheap Slot.it car as a donor, rather than buying all the bits individually. Top Slots 'n' Trains are listing the Lancia LC2 kit for £27.99, considerably less than buying all the bits separately.

I've just looked up the parts I was on about and there only £11.38 Axle kit is £12.19 and motor mount £5.19

Hello all,

Thank you for the tips! I like the idea of buying the kit since it includes a new guide, front axle and so on. I am also affraid that if I buy the parts separately I will mess up the compatibility, which I have done previously.

I will do something similar to this for some other cars and I might try my luck with kits in that round. Stepping up my game one round at the time :)

@Alexis: I am having difficulties with the url you mentioned. Is that post still available?

Good morning all,

the car arrived yesterday and I will definitely have to go for a new chassis, tyres and all of the internal components. I love the model, it is beautiful. The problem is the execution of the parts that are supposed to take the car around a track. The tyres have heavy mold lines and the rubber won't be made to grip even if I were to sand them them down. For being a fly car I think the gears mesh up pretty well and the stub axles are looking ok. The look of the car is amazing though. I have already ordered a chassis from shape ways for a cobra Daytona and will see how it holds up before ordering a new chassis for this one. I will then post an update here. But here are some pictures of the car :)

Thank you for the help
Best regards
Robert

It's overly difficult to re-use the original rear axle and gear due to the design of the slot.it pods, plus you'd need a front axle as the Alfa has stub axles from factory. Also, if you're going to the effort of all this, you're not going to use the standard, out of round and prone to cracking, Fly wheels. These couple extra bits put the shopping list up to more than the cost of buying the kit, of which funds could be re-couped selling chassis and body.

If you've ordered an Olifer chassis for a Revell Cobra Daytona, I fear you will be disappointed. I bought one a while ago and the wheelbase is too short by approx 1mm, bringing the rear wheels too far forward to sit nicely within the wheel well. You can make the chassis work, but the stance of the car will look naff. I abandoned mine and instead grafted a Slot.it pod directly into the original Rev/Mon chassis.

However, it just so happens that I'm occupying myself during isolation by fitting an Olifer chassis to a Fly Alfa Romeo TZ2. For this model, Olifer's chassis fits nicely.

I'd urge caution before ordering a Slot.it kit. Yes, it's a bit cheaper than the sum of its parts, but you don't get to choose exactly the parts you want.

For my Fly/Olifer hybrid, I wanted to use tyres that look realistic in profile, and NSR Classics have a much taller and more realistic profile than the Slot.it equivalent. Similarly with the kit motor mount and wheels. I don't know what, if any, offset the kit's motor mount has, but having trial fitted everything from 0.0mm, 0.5mm and 1.0mm offset pods, to my eye the best looking combination is a 0.5mm pod, 15.8mm wheels (which are a tiny fraction larger in visible diameter than the Fly originals) and NSR 20.5x10 rear tyres (NSR's Ford P68 originals I think). I haven't decided upon front tyres yet.

I'm in the process of machining the original Fly wheels to use as inserts. Front wheels are Slot.it 15.8x8.2x1.5. Rears 15.8x8.2x2.5 with the part of the boss that protrudes into the wheel centre and gets in the way of the insert machined shorter by 1.55mm, which allows the insert to sit nicely in the correct position.

No photos yet of the finished car, but working on it makes a nice diversion from wall-to-wall virus news on the radio and TV.

Thank you all for the tips. So yesterday morning I actually ordered the chassis and the white kit. I figured it was not that expensive and I have no slot.it car in my collection. So I want to have a look at the setup of the car as well as scavenging the parts. I also want to make wheelinsert of the original fly wheels and I am not sure what rims to use. Would NSR alloys fir on a slot.it axle? I have a spare 917 that I got for cheap, I might kit bash a bit and use parts from that model and the slot.it white kit..

David, the wip looks good! I am expecting delivery of my cobra chassis today, I will let you know if he has adjusted his design since you bought yours. I am hoping he has!

Best regards
Robert
NSR alloys will not fit the Slot.It axle as standard - you would have to ream them out with a 3/32 tapered reamer. But they may be too wide anyway - the TZ is a tiny car. Slot.It 15 x 8 wheels or similar would probably be better.

I am curious: why do you suggest a tapered reamer? My apologies but I cannot see the logic in that.

Alwyn, my 3/32" reamer is tapered.

The tip is smaller, it isnt 3/32" all the way but gets to the spec dimension mid way along.

I use both of these reamers for different purposes as you probably realise.

Hello all,

I'll be honest and confess that I did not understand the last part of the conversation. I will try and see how the parts I ordered fit, and then I will take it from there I guess. That being said I haven't even gotten a confirmation for my order for the Lancia I paid for.

I did get around to doing some work on the cobra. I used an old scaleauto pod with an engine and some rims from an nsr 917. The chassis is off! I can see that mm you talked about, but I think I have a fix. I will keep you posted :)

Thanks for all the help, I have learned quite a bit about the tuning side of things from your replies.

Best regards

Hello all,

so this project is way more complicated than anticipated. But I just got the parts I ordered and assembly has started. Before that I finished the cobra. All except for the new interior.
The chassis I bought was a millimeter to short and the plastic was to thin at the back. So I had to glue some plastic card to the chassis in order to lift the body of the chassis. I managed to fit some nsr rims on the back and I have some pcs rims fitted to the front. After that I painted the wheel inserts and the cobra is running like a dream. Next step will be the interior of the car.

Best regards
Robert
