AMT - 63 Corvette Stingray

I always wanted a split window Stingray but the 1/1 version keeps eluding me. Something to do with the price. I'll have to settle for this one instead.

It used to be a static model. It runs quite well now with a flat-6 and ball-bearing chassis. Thanks for looking.

Yes, this is a great looking car! Split window Vettes are so rare & expensive because they were only made in '63. Yours has nice paint, what brand of paint did you use?
Thank you Bill.

The paint is a spray-can of Tamiya TS-8. It goes on very nicely if you don't follow the instructions. Holding the can 10 to 12 inches away doesn't create a good shine because the drying agent dissipates before going on the body. The drying agent helps the paint keep that "wet" look after drying. 3 light tac coats a minute apart followed by a final wet coat. Hold the can 6 to 7 inches away and move it a lot faster across the work to avoid runs. That's how this car was painted.

Practice makes perfect. Best of luck with whatever you're painting!

Nice car and an interesting method! Having seen your result it is worth a try. Might also save some of the precious drops.

Very very nice indeed, fabulous chassis as always, those 63 split window vettes are an absolute classic. There's a great article on the 63 vette and 64 notchback stang in the September issue of Octane magazine. Back in 89 I was torn between a 72 911, 70 Alpine 110 or 68 C4 vette, the 911 won out.

Thank you for your kind words.

This was one of my first chassis builds in 2018 and is much less refined. The chassis is a bit ugly to me being squared off at the back. I don't do that anymore. The Jaguar XK120 and Bugatti T50B reflect how the chassis's are finished these days.

All three choices are nice Tangerinedream. You couldn't lose.

Hello KensRedZed,

Lovely job with that Stingray. The split-window always looks a bit exotic.

Leo
Great looking car! My own AMT Stingray (many years back) was powered with an MRRC slimline. I sprayed it dark green and it was one of my best cars. Was sold around 1980 along with many conversions including a Renault Dauphine, three VW Beetles and a Morris Marina. I don't see any ready-to-run split window versions of the Stingray so maybe I'll go for a 1/32 kit. Several on eBay -

Thank you kindly Leo and Jeepster.

Go for it Jeepster. These Stingrays are an easy build.

I've separated the windows for the next 63-Stingray I'm building to replace this one. They sit a little deeper in the window frame that way.

What a lovely job you made of that, both the chassis and the body.

Brings back memories of my Revell OOB kit of the '63 Sting Ray years back. Mine was metallic mid-green, just because it was the only Pactra spray can my local LHS had in stock.

The split window was my first (and only) slot car for commercial tracks. I believe it was a Revell. How do you make your chassis? I like the simplicity. Have you covered that in previous posts?
Thank you Kit and Weltmeister.

I hope to make a thread showing more details in the future. It takes a lot of time to properly document even the simple things.
