A little more progress tonight but not significant enough to warrant pictures.

Been tidying up the front end with fine grade flatting paper, machining back the side pods fractionally and sanding down the top of the cockpit to present a truer/lower profile (which may have the benefit of lowering the COG too).

Trouble is I've got no heating in my garage workshop and it was bitter cold in there tonight, so I could not stand the low temperatures for too long.

Don't say I dont suffer for my art!

More to follow over the weekend, as its race night at Bearwood tomorrow night.

Good luck.

I hand painted my tartan headband on my 005 which although rough up close looks fine from a reasonable distance.

Some more baby steps today as I can't stand the cold temperatures in my garage workshop for more than an hour at a time.

Although it doesn't look much I've cut the front radiator exhaust vent into the nose of the bodyshell.

It took about 1 hour to do but by that time I could not feel my feet for the cold!

In this pic you can see the front radiator inlet that I machined in. It's a bit too big actually but that can be easily put right with Milliput.

Santa tells me that I've got a book by Doug Nye coming called "The Grand Prix Tyrrells". I may not carry out any more work until I've read that book because its got loads of reference material and pictures that will help me with the build.

Either way its far too cold in the garage to go anywhere near it with a can of paint. So it looks like this one is going to be a long old slog!

Never mind . . . . sometimes its better to travel than to arrive!

Ian H - do look forward to this book. It is on a top five favorite list on my shelf.

I take it down and read all over again each second or third month. Enjoy....

Well it was a bit warmer in the garage tonight so I had an hour or so on the 006.

I've cut in where the inboard disc brake cooling vents are and Araldited in the engine cover ready for trimming back and filling.

Still plenty to do but I can't carry on until the Araldite goes hard.

As I finished work for Christmas on Tuesday I was able to crack on with the build during Wednesday.

I've built the side radiator housings and the engine cover/airbox.

The airbox and front wing endplates are made from Milliput in the picture above and are still in a rough unfinished state but I'm waiting for the resin to go off at the moment hence the "unfinished" appearance.

I'm quite pleased with the progress and its beginning to look like the 73 006. It wont be perfect because as a racing model (No shelf Queens in my collection thankyou!) I've had to make some compromises which means it won't be exact in appearance, but what the hey, I'll still love it!

Well Uncle Ken let Roger and the other lads at the Woodyard go home early because it was Christmas, but not before they did a little more on the 006 today.

I've drilled out the airbox and structure below the airbox ostensibly to reduce the all up weight above the COG but the airbox will actually work to supply cooling air to the commutator, so I'm quite pleased with that!

Anyway, the lads at the Woodyard are off on holiday until after Christmas so there won't be any more updates until after Boxing Day.

If you've been following this thread may I take this opportunity to wish you and Very Merry Christmas and a SLOTTING New Year!

Hi Ian

I guess unless Santa let you down, & you got the Readers Digest book of something realy boreing...

...you must have read 'The Grand Prix Tyrrells' from cover to cover, at least 3 times by now !!!

How is it ? , I checked it on Amazon, seems to have got rave reviews.

Have you seen 'Formula 1 in camera: 1970-79' by Paul Parker & Rainer Schlegelmilch ?
Has got good Amazon reviews, & volume 2 is soon to be on the shelves.

Cheers

Si.

P.S. questions about Milliput, for the 'Milliput Maestro', to follow !

When Uncle Ken popped into the "woodyard" on Boxing Day what did he find?

Only Roger and the rest of the lads working on the 006 despite asking them to take the rest of the holiday off. Ken almost had a "froth job" but he's a decent bloke and he decided to let them carry on because they were happy as sandboys . . . . .

As you can see the body came together quite well in the last few days.

I usually don't use a primer but as this project has involved so much reconstruction a quick coat of primer will be useful to throw out where there are any imperfections.

All in all its not looking too bad but I will need to fill a few dinks and low spots here and there. After all I don't want to spoil the ship for a Ha'penny of tar.

I also primed and re-sprayed the rear wing in the topcoat colour of Vauxhall Regatta Blue. Which is a perfect match for the Tyrrell Race Team colours.

The chassis has also been primed and given a quick splash of Midnight Blue (the Tyrrell 006's were painted 2 tone blue).

I need to have a quick fettle of the shell and get some more Midnight Blue paint so there probably won't be much activity for a while but I am expecting "Wee Jackie" in for a seat fitting soon.

Cheers.

How's the Tyrrell book ?

Cheers

Si.

Very good indeed!

Loads of pictures, cutaways and explanations of why the cars looked the way that the did. a really superb bit of reference material.

However, it seems that early on Francois Cevert was a bit of a liability! Every time the team would build a new car or chassis, he would bloody well prang it!

Amazing to think that these world beaters were built in a woodshed. When you look at McLarens modern facility - which must have cost circa £350m to set up and build - it makes you wonder why they don't win every race!

Hi again Ian.

Thanks for your '70s inspirations.

You've encouraged me to get something 'BLUE & FAST', for the F1 garages here at MRW.

I read your rules for 'The Johnson Formula', which look real good; & far simpler than anything the FIA could dream up !

I now know what a 'Johnson Motor' is.

Seems like they were used a lot in the '70s, as my Mini's & TR7 appear to be powered by them also.

I just managed to score a good condition Tyrrell 007 from Ebay, for my back to the '70s car tune-up effort.

I'm thinking to keep it all 'Johnson Legal', it seems like a good reciepe.

Can you help me with tyres Ian ?

No doubt when the Tyrrell arrives at MRW, the tyres will be totaly shot.

Can you recommend a Scaley C???? #, or any other brand, that fits the standard Scaley 007 wheels ?

Without giving away all your top racing secrets, what's the best for grip on Scaley Sport ?

I am sure you know the answer to this.

Getting tyres to fit & for best grip is often a nightmare !

Cheers

GET A GRIP MAN!(Hur hur excuse the pun).

Its not a nightmare. A nightmare is The Somme or Helmand Province etc! These are only toy car tyres.

You could try this tyre supplier.

My Bearwood chum Graham Pritchard recently bought 100 tyres so I can ask him if he's willing to sell some off at a modest rate of return.

You could always use Ninco F1 tyres which also fit nicely.

As for grip on Scaley Sport? Can say I've had much track time on that surface but I find that if you true your tyres carefully without overheating them and then rub a little 3 in 1 oil onto the tyre surface (leave it overnight to soak in) you'll have a tyre that can cope with most track surfaces.

It depends how you drive. I like a fairly neutral handling car, but some prefer a little drift. The nice thing about the 3 in 1 method is that you can develop the compound to suit your style.

Gotta go, the 006 is in the paintshop and it needs a coat every 20 minutes!

I don't want Ken having a "Froth Job" on me!

Hi Ian.

Ken's gonna bust you down to tea-boy, if you don't get that car RIGHT ! ...

...hurry, you must !

I figure that smooth paint-job could give you a tenth or two, in the aero dept.

Thanks for the rec. on the Ninco F1 tyres.

I have found the F1 tyres on MRW's 2 Ninco's are exellent, good to know they fit the Tyrrell 007.

I have a spare set, although performance seems a bit down on the older, more seasoned tyres.

This whole, put oil on yer tyres thing, which seems to be what people do, is doing my head in totaly.

I haven't tried it, as adding oil & petrochemical products to rubber, seems like a no-brainer, don't do it; BUT, everyone seems to be doing it !

As a fairly experienced materials engineer, the sense in this, makes no-sense at all; although petrochemical products do chemicaly attack rubber, so may make the material more 'sticky' in the short-term.

I see in your 'Johnson Formula' this oiling is permitted.

Perhaps this is not the place to discuss tyres fully, but...

...'The Johnson Formula' says NO silicon tyres, which is OK; but WHY ?

People in paintshops don't like silicon polish products around, and shoe-shine stuff is slippery also.

However, SOLID silicon products, like tyres, cable insulation & bathroom sealant etc., seem to me to be totaly INERT, and offer no lubrication propertys like silicon oil does whatsoever.

Henry Ford once said:- "If you've always been doing it this way, you've probably been doing it wrong !"

Just so people know, as I tried to understand this 'oil' concept elsewhere on the forum, but was shot down generally in the attempt to talk about it; I'm wondering if anyone reading this can give us 'the science' behind 'oil' offering grip ( a million people can't be wrong, love to know the answer ! ).

Cheers

Hi Si

I'm no materials engineer but I used to be a toolmaker years ago and the 3 in 1 thing went against my engineering instincts too.

It works though!

As for silicones I am lead to believe that a lot of clubs ban them because it takes a long time to "rubber" a track in with conventional rubber tyres racing across them on a regular basis. Eventually the tracks develop more traction and are better to race on.

I'm told that silicone tyres can wreck a "rubbered in " track in minutes leaving one lane slick and another grippy.

I've no idea if this has any merit in fact but for an easy life I excluded silicones from the Johnson formula.

Nice to get your responses and support my brother of the plexitrack!

The 006 is in the autoclave (on top of the radiator in the downstairs bog) to allow the paint to harden off a bit. If the paint has hardened off enough tonight I'll do a quick re-assemble and post some pics later on. The colour and the finish should please Ken and the lads so I don't think I'll be on tea detail tonight anyway!

Hi Ian

Nice for your rec. on the Vauxhall Regatta Blue...

...From my youth, the original Scaley placey seemed a bit too lite.

We see when the 'fast blue thing arrives' !!!

Looks like the 'bog' radiator's gonna keep chief Ken happy with the mobile...

...I hope Barbie is just as happy !!!

Cheers

Hi Ian ...
... I can only throw flowers, as the 006 you this was very good. I see that you very quickly, and without fear, and is providing phenomenal results, congratulations.!
Like everyone else, wait for the next photos ... especially looking forward to see how to solve the issue of front brake ventilation, which no yes yes dare I with mine ... :-s

... I can ask you a question that you used to paint the spoiler? I bought a tamiya (without comparing with samples or photos, eye) and I find it dark, so I'll have to buy another spray ....

well, I said, it follows that luxury so
a healthy, happy new year!

Interested in your 2 tone blue point.

''The chassis has also been primed and given a quick splash of Midnight Blue (the Tyrrell 006's were painted 2 tone blue).''

I painted my 006 (vertical side panels) gloss black. I trawled Google images (endlessly) for ''Tyrrell 006'' and every image had side panels that I thought looked black. Cos of copyright , I don't know if I can reproduce examples here. Is ''Midnight Blue'' actually very nearly black??
