ARC PRO simple mod to switch the lap sensor into APB-mode

This simple modification switches the lap counting sensor of the ARC PRO into an APB-compatible mode.

The modification relaxes the ID-LED-to-guide-blade constraints of the ARC PRO enabling cars with surechange guides and/or cars with ID LEDs placed a long way back from the guide blade, still, to function correctly. This is achieved by switching the lap counting dual sensor into an APB-compatibility mode.

In making this modification, the analog lap counting function is lost.

The modification is straight forward... and done carefully can be reversed if necessary.

The modification is for DIGITAL use only.

The following nine photos show the procedure (no text)...

Anyone else given this a try? all feedback welcome! for example... was it easy or difficult? and... did it work...? ie were the results positive? or... was it truly awful?

Hi Doc, as I said earlier I will do this mod, but not until they reopen the airports here...when I do the mod I'll likely just cut the grey wire and put a switch in there that will be accessible thru the side of the track...I've got loads of the small switches that came out of my Carrera cars that were used to switch polarity

Nice catch, Dr_C. Still with my APB.. but interested.

By the way..

The modification relaxes the ID-LED-to-guide-blade constraints of the ARC PRO enabling cars with surechange guides and/or cars with ID LEDs placed a long way back from the guide blade, ..
how many millimeters are considered "risky"?
Post below describes the IR LED positioning restriction for an unmodified ARC PRO... the above modification relaxes this restriction bringing performance in line with the APB C7042 in terms of flexibility of positioning of the IR LED.

Big thanks. Good mod, expecially that one with the microswitch.

I'm playing with the O2-TypeC chips over a non-Scalextric cars (Clio NSR), where the led falls a bit distant ..or too distant, if the chip is mounted transversal.

As I wrote, no problem with my APB but.. who knows.. one day....
Once we get past lock-down there is another variant of this mod to share which involves a small plug-in module and one solder point. This does the digital/analog switching automatically - no extra switch required. I have promised to send of these modules out to forum friends who have offered to test the mod. So hopefully I can update on this at some point over the summer :)

That sounds hopeful, thanks Dr C, look forward to your findings.
Hi Dr_C

I have slot.it and BRM cars that have the problem with the led and the new Arc Pro powerbase. i also have a old C7042, that I could use for this change. But my technical knowledge on doing those kind of changes is equal zero

Could you as a another example create a very good video for "dummies", so it was possible to create this change?

I am using Magic App for my Arc Pro powerbase, doing this modification would that have any impact on my Magic App RMS?

On my Scalextric track where the Arc Pro is connected I also use Oxygen system from slot.it, would that still work after doing this change?

Many thanks in advance

The photos in post #1 for this mod couldn't possibly be more clear, Anders. I don't see how a video would add anything. All you're doing is removing, or cutting if you want, that gray wire.

This should have no negative impact on your use of the MAGIC app or oXigen. The only negative impact is the inability to get lap counting/timing for analog mode.
This mod is only for ARC PRO... and it is intended to achieve similar performance as per the APB C7042 with v1.09 firmware.

The mod will work fine with both Hornby ARC app and Magic app. As mentioned the only down side is loss of analog mode - though that can be retained using a switch (as mentioned above) or using the small plug-in module which auto switches between digital and analog modes (still to be shared).

Thanks Mr F :)
Anders, my good friend. This is as easy as it Can be. Let talk on the phone, and I Will help you out.

Hi Anders hope you enjoy the mod... and thanks to Gysse, and others, for helping with details... I think once you see precisely what the photos are showing... it should be straight forward... just two screws to remove to access the sensor board in question...

Bit the bullet yesterday and did the mod (I only cut and taped the grey wire)...had a race this afternoon and not one lap lost...

... this also fully addresses the non-black guide blade issue - any type/colour of guide blade can be used. The modification switches off the side-facing IR LEDs effectively tricking the blade sensor into thinking a blade is permanently blocking the IR beam.
C
Just one point of further clarification...

This mod addresses the non-black guide issue when used with the Magic app. It doesn't fully address the non-black guide issue when used with the official Hornby app. Apologies for any confusion on this point.

It doesnt fully address the use of non-black guide blades for the Hornby lap because this app uses the exit sensors (which are blade detect sensors)... these are read to re-enable lap counting after an ID detect to avoid double counting of laps. The Magic app uses a simpler timer algorithm to avoid double counting.

Also, when I mention non-black this is in recognition that non-black guides e.g. white/red/grey etc are often more transmissive to infra red (IR) i.e. they often dont function with IR blade detect sensors.

Please remember the main purpose of this mod is to relax the IR-LED-to-guide-blade positioning constraints of the stock ARC PRO (v0.3 and v0.4).

re: Please remember the main purpose of this mod is to relax the IR-LED-to-guide-blade positioning constraints of the stock ARC PRO (v0.3 and v0.4).

I have some newish cars that are DPR.

Interestingly the hatch has been moved forward, slighty tucked under the front axle, making DPR chips a more "cosy" fit. At first I thought it was to allow more leg room for the driver, maybe not?

The hatch opening on the newer cars seems slightly smaller, as older hatch covers don't fit without a bit of sanding.
Thanks Neillie for sharing your user perspective on this modification - very much appreciated. Has anyone else given this a try?

Using this mod to switch the ARC PRO into APB-mode... four lane start/finish lines become possible... but with limitations...

Putting the sensor phototransistors in parallel collector-to-collector and emitter-to-emitter becomes possible with the ARC PRO to double up the number of lanes to four. The approach is exactly the same as often used for the APB. In the image below, 5 laps were recorded for each of the four lanes. I will do some high speed trials over the weekend to ensure the extra capacitance of four phototransistors in parallel does not significantly reduce the ID detection efficiency at speed.

So far it all seems to be working fine.

Next the limitations:

1/ The powerbase must be v0.4 or in the case of v0.3 only after making the 510 Ohm sensor circuit resistor swap-out.

2/ This four lane solution only functions with the Magic unofficial ARC app - not the Hornby ARC app. This is due to the latter using the exit blade sensors to avoid double counts.

Time for some four lane S/F testing... so an improvised four lane track... kind-of...
