Are border lead-ins cosmetic or actually functional?

I bought some outer borders and some inners. They look great and are fun to slide out on. I'm trying to figure out if I want to spend more on the straight lead-in borders or not. They will also look great, but are they needed for driving. Perhaps only on the end of the curves and less so on the starts? This stuff is getting expensive ;-)

Borders won't keep the car in the slot.
I suppose it depends on what your definition of what ''borders' are?

If you have no run-offs but say have only the grey Scalextric Aramco barriers on a corner then larger 1:32 cars (such as Maserati Trofeos and Ford Gran Torinos), you will find you can rattle around that corner in the outside lane as the car will 'ride' the barrier stopping it deslotting giving outside lane a decent advantage.

This is what I refer to them as to stop confusion:

You don't need to buy boarders for the whole track, you can use the proper attached boarders where they are really needed and filling the gaps with home made from mdf or foamboard. If you don't mind the difference in grip levels you can use mdf or foamboard everywhere. The only problem can be if the track is subject to a large range of temperatures as the mdf or foamboard will expand at a different rate unlike the standard boarders which will normally be made of the same material as the track.

if your track is made so there wont be any deslots ,cos there are boarders everywhere , then whats the point .
a race track is supposed to have variety and challenges ,track limits comes to mind
So crusty what kind of track do you race on? Without a doubt it was a driving error. Look at the track and you will see it has plenty of challenges even with the borders. Those who race analog on big wide tracks with often 6-8 lanes have no clue what it’s about. Just to be fair I race on those too Transport hub Toy Urban design Landscape Engineering

If you're relying on a barrier that far off the track to keep your car on the track I suggest you do more tyre prep as it sounds like they're woefully lacking in grip because your car is going more sideways than forwards.

That's a nice layout!

Only comment I'd make is you could make the pitlanes longer by chopping off a 1/2 straight from pit lane in track

Um, I'm not, I'm talking about having just the Aramco barrier with or without the catch fence, I am NOT talking about using runoffs....
Is someone messing with this thread...editing posts and order?

Was going to write exactly the same thing ! But as an example (a very quickly made example mind you) this is one that i made out of mdf to replace a runoff section that i was missing. I already had the fencing (barriers), but you could certainly make your own as well. It is almost exactly the same height as standard scalex sport & I've not seen any noticable difference in traction between it & the plastic sections at either side of it.

That’s been changed recently and lengthened Along with lengthening the far end and centering the ess to make it a little more like the real track (Road America). You can see the new sections on my YouTube channel—Road America Northwest.
