I bought three Auto Art WRC cars (2 x Pug 206, 1 x Cit Xsara) with a view to modding them for digital. All are 4wd with lights, and the wiring side has gone swimmingly well, though the lights are of the Lucas variety (dim, flicker or off).

The digital chip has been fitted in OK, and the LED was fitted into the transit fixing screwhole, and is perfect.

However, it turns out that no less than two of the three rear pinions are knackered. One is split, and the other has a non-standard gap between two of the teeth.

Being new to Digital and to modding, I would be very grateful for any tips as to where I can find replacement pinions for these AutoARt cars, so that I can mod the other two.

And if anyone can suggest how I rewire the lights so that they stay on, I'd be even more grateful.

The spares supply seems to be erratic, with spares for some cars being excellent, whilst spares for others are virtually non-existent. Direct e-mails will be responded to and they will order non-catalogue spares but at very high prices, eg, a set of wheels and tyres for half the cost of the car.

I have a split pinion on an AutoArt car too, I'll check on replacements and let you know. That is, unless I am beaten to it....

AutoArt spares are very hard to acquire. The only retailer I know who supplies them is Pendles. I have a Subaru that had a split pinion, I replaced both pinions with Scalextric ones as thats what I had in the spares box. It works fine, just tyres to sort out now on other AutoArt cars.

Thanks, Peter. I have sent them a begging letter, as they don't sell anything other than a rear driveshaft, compete with spring and pinion. I will let you know if they oblige.

Thank you too, Matthew - a bit of a saints day, it seems. I have only recently got back into the Scalextric loop, so have no spares at all. So the AutoArt and Scalextric axles are the same diameter, then? I had thought that they were not. Where can I get Scalextric spares without paying through the nose for three bits of plastic in a £5 bag?

I bought an Autoart Xsara and did exactly the same as you and had the same problems.
I converted it back to analogue and then to 2wd to overcome the issues.
It's now relegated to can't be bothered.

Do you mean the pinions or the contrate gears? The pinions are the small cogs on the motor spindle. The contrate gear is on the axle.

Most 1:32 slot cars seem to go with the standard 3/32 axle (even if they are Johnny foreigner from metric land).

You should be able to replace both pinion and contrate using most 1:32 spares. Swapmeets are good for this sort of thing as is ebay. You could try car boot sales in the hope of finding a knackered car you can cannibalise.

The pinions are expensive on ebay at the moment but you can get 2 axles fitted with contrates for under £3 at the moment.
