I've bought an Autoart Impreza with the idea of using it as a challenging rally car, I'm not looking for speed but something that will be a fun drive and a challenge, is this a good idea or have I wasted £15?

not a very good car; looks great, too much motor, horrible tires (w/ no aftermarket option). the MSC is the best looking Subaru & drives fantastic- you get what you pay for in this instance.

Many ways to skin a cat.
With my AutoArt Peugeot 206 I swapped out the gears and pinions for Slot.It and the wheels for Scalextric.
A simpler option that seems to work is to go to WASP for some decent tyres.
With the Subaru I'd be tempted to fit SCX axles.
Basically £15 has got you one of the best looking model rally cars in 1/32 scale. Now you just need to improve the running gear - my parts cost a total of £23.00 - and you will have a very enjoyable car for Scalextric money.

You haven't waisted $22 AUD just think of it as a learning experience ....... stick it on a shelf in plane sight so you can see it always, and it will remind you .... AutoArt is not for racing, it's for looking pretty
Save your money on the rebuild and start off with something that is already 80 - 90% there ie any of the Ninco range or SCX, Scalextric rally cars run a close second behind AutoArt, if you feel adventurous you could try one of the Advant slot, or MSC range

I enjoy running mine. I had to cut of the engine grid off the underside to get enough ground clearance for the elevations on my Sport track! It slips and slides but I enjoy it and it is a rally car. I think the tyres are the weakest link. Anyone have a part number for good replacements?

I've got 2 Autoart Impreza's and I they're fine by me. They may not be the fastest cars, but they oversteer in a realistic way for cars of that era and seem well matched. For £15 I can't see any problem. I also got a Tommi Makinen 2001 Mitsubishi Evo for just £10.
I'd say they are a better car from 'my point of view' than the Scaley Lotus Cortina which is rediculously fast.
I don't tend to mess with my cars however and mostly just run them as sold.

I too have the Tommi Evos. Bought three of them at a fiver each.
Luckily, bought a bag of old tyres for a tenner. It contained about 20 axle sets complete with gears.
Simply swapped them out and changed the pinions on the shafts. They seem to become quite toothless when I try and true the tyres! So just throw on an old scaley or Ninco pinion so they last.
I now have three great little cars that are evenly matched and I don't mind visitors smashing them about too much.

Your whole post has just hit the nail right on the head, especially from a hobbyist rather than pro racer point of view.
You don't have to spend a lot to make any car run fairly well, and you can use them hard without worrying about damage.
I won't let anyone else drive my MSC Cars because I don't want the risk of damage

Your whole post has just hit the nail right on the head, especially from a hobbyist rather than pro racer point of view.
You don't have to spend a lot to make any car run fairly well, and you can use them hard without worrying about damage.

Finally got round to trying out the Impreza, first impression is that it's smaller than the Ninco or Scalextric Imprezas that I've got, beautifully finished and has skinny tyres, it also relatively heavy compared to those cars.
Magnet removed, first few laps, it's okay but has a tendency to understeer not helped by the guide being a lttle deep for Classic track.
I remove the self centreing prong from the guide and fluffed the braids up a bit, understeer is now largely cured but the guide still clicks on classic track, it really needs sanding down a little but I think I'll just let it wear down.
It's a good car that's challenging to drive, with concentration it's quicker than my SCX Evo, but it's easy to crash, the grip of the tyres is improving with use.
