Greetings friends, I've been out of the slots since I sold all my Scx digital a couple of years back. My setup used to be in a hot garage down here in Florida. Anyway, thinking of starting over with a smaller layout in a bedroom as I noticed a 007 Skyfall set coming out soon. Getting the fever again as I miss the hobby......not sure how the wife will take it though! I'll be retracing all the great hints and tips I've missed.

Welcome back, will it be Dino Raceway mk2 or something completely different?
I assume you're a bit of a movie fan with all of the advertising boards around your old track and your mention of Skyfall and being Jawsfan.
Perhaps another movie inspired track? Deathrace could be an interesting one to do..

As for the wife, might be best not to mention it just yet.

I may go with Scalextric this time as I want the 007 cars, hoping there may be a digital Skyfall set rather than analogue. The tack will have to be narrow as I'll only have 8 x 3 approximate to work with.
Good advice on the wife for now!

So it looks like the Skyfall set is analog only (please correct me if I'm wrong). In the past I had the whole SCX Digital setup with the lap counter, so I'm familiar on how digital works. I'm leaning towards Scalextric this time as I'm looking at the cars available to collect. Couple of questions to throw out:

If I go with Scalextric this time and start off with the Skyfall (analog) set, is there a lap counter available for analog?

Can this set be made into digital down thew line? Or is it like SCX where analog track can't be used with digital?

hi
yes you can turn it into digital anytime you like by just adding the necessary parts.

and there is also a lap counter if you decide to stick with analouge.

It's made by scaley then chances are that it can be chipped, even the old classic single seaters have been converted.

as you have been away for a while the progress on scaley digital has come on in leaps and bounds of late with wireless throttles and modified chips to name just a few add on's.It may well be worthwile having a look through the scaley digital forum.

Does anyone know what track the Scalextric SKYFALL set will be? (Classic, sport?.....will it even matter?)
Also, is there a Digital set that anyone would recommend that will be compatable with the SKYFALL set ?(this way I will have a couple of extra cars and track I may need)

Although I won't be able to have a big setup like before, I know I'll be wanting to race at least 3-4 cars, so I know I'll end up going to digital in the long run and certainly want the lap counter option. I just want to know that I will be able to expand the SKYFALL SET. I'm looking at a 8 or10x3 narrow layout based on the space I have made in the room. My wife is growing more suspicious to my recent burst of energy in cleaning the room up! LOL

I was dissapointed in my visit to my local hobby shop today where I had purchased my SCX Digital in the past, they have practically moved away from the slot car scene and expanded into action figures. Plus the staff there did not seem too confident in what they were telling me about Scalextric!

Hi Jawsfan,

The advice on looking through the Scalextric Digital section of Slotforum is good.

The Skyfall set looks like it is Sport track. Sport track is identical to digital track - digital track is simply Sport track with digital features.

Conversion track pieces are available to connect the three different Scalextric track standards together but if you stick to Sport you will be OK.

The Skyfall cars appear to be DPR which means you can easily fit the digital plug to upgrade them to digital - this will take you a minute or two per car.

If you go digital then the Advanced Power Base (APB) will allow you to run cars in analogue (one car per lane if you have twin power supplies) or digital mode (up to 4 cars with a single power supply or up to 6 cars with twin power supplies.)

To convert your Skyfall set to digital you will need to add the APB, a suitable number of chips for your cars, digital hand controllers and some lane changers. That's all. Stick to straight lane changers if you want the analogue running option. Design in one full straight before a lane changer or you may find sliding cars missing the sensors. The same applies to the start/finish line or you risk not registering laps.

The APB counts laps and times them to 1/1000 of a second.

If you buy 3rd party software (SSDC for example) for about $100 you get a cable and software that will allow you to use your PC or laptop to take control of the APB and simulate fuel. Look at the SSDC section on Slotforum to get your mind blown.

Scalextric sell different types of chips which means you can chip pretty much any slot car from any manufacturer providing it has enough space inside the body somewhere to stash the chip.

I think there is a lap counter for analogue sport track but you might consider that to be lost cash if you upgrade to digital soon as the lap counter for analogue will be useless on a digital setup.

Start saving - it's probably even more addictive then when you entered slot rehab!

Possibly - it depends if the cars are going to be available separately.

Scalextric cars don't come in analogue and digital versions. This is because most (but not all) Scalextric cars are now made digital plug ready so it's easy to convert an analogue car to digital by inserting the chip. If a car is DPR all you do is remove a small panel at the bottom of the car, unplug the cable that is attached to it, and attach the cable to the digital plug which is a chip mounted on the same shaped panel so it just screws back into the car. You don't even have to remove the body (although I suggest you do remove the body to lubricate the running gear occasionally). By the way Pioneer license the DPR system from Scalextric so you can chip the Pioneer cars the same way. Pioneer do a nice range of American Muscle/Pony cars including the Steve McQueen Bullit car (seeing as you have a film bias!).

DPR is quite good because you can swap chips around and save some cash. I would suggest you get chips to permanently install in the cars you will race frequently and a few more so you can swap them around and drive your other DPR cars from time to time.

The non-DPR cars need to have their chips installed permanently so it's a chip per car I'm afraid.

This is why the analogue mode on the 6 car APB is so good - you can give a car a run out without having to invest in a chip just to play for a few laps.

AVOID the 4 car digital power base - it's a dead end. Some digital sets still come with this so steer clear, it's a waste of time as it has no features whatsoever beyond being able to drive 4 cars. With the 6 car base you can even change car power levels to make them more evenly matched or to limit top speed so small kids don't come off at every corner.

Thanks for your feedback Mr Modifier. It looks as if I should consider getting a digital set with APB and then buying the cars separately. Although I did like the idea of the jump and crossover sections in the Skyfall set. Does anyone still race in analog form with Scalextric?

Now I just found the Quantum of Solace digital set online which would get me up and running. Any feedback on this set? Is $329 too steep for this? I could then just order the Skyfall cars when released. This would give me 4 cars (which is the max I want to race with). I'm also thinking of getting track addition #C8514 which looks to be digital compatable, any feedback on this addition?
