Abertawe Slotcar Racers have decided to run a different kind of club this year. We want to make this club accessible for all racers regardless of skill and/or financial status as well as age. After weeks of discussion and reflecting with current members we found that slot car racing is a quite expensive hobby if we were to run the usual club classes and members tried to be competitive.
Beginners are confronted with cars which are around £50 to buy and controllers which are not cheap either and let alone the cost of tuning parts. Oh yes and there is the "how to tune up a car" bit.
Hence we will be running 3 classes with equally tuned up (so not out of the box) cars which will be provided by the club and 2 classes where members bring their own cars. With this format we will be able to provide a racing environment for younger racers as well as beginners and the racer who is shying away from the initial cost of our hobby. It gives those people a chance to take part in 3 out of 5 races with minimal cost. For the seasoned racers or pro's we have the 2 pro classes. In any case equal cars for all will show pure racing skills and not who has got the better tuning skills or tyre prep.
We are hoping to bring slot car racing to the broader fans of the hobby. Our calendar will be out by Friday here on the forum and our webpage. So keep your eyes peeled on how we are doing with our experiment and wish us luck.

Sounds good Sandra, let us know how the experiment turns out!

The nights I have attended Abertawe and run club cars have been a great success. Fun for all, a level playing field and some close racing with lots of laughs.

Good luck for 2018, I think this is a great idea.

Sandra that sounds a phenominal idea to attrack peop.e and hence potential new members.
Just wondering how you plan on getting the message out there.
Not being critical, in fact opposite as i think your lead could aid a lot of other clubs in pursuit of promoting membership .
Kudos to,you and the club on a great idea.

Hi Bob
We are trying to advertise via leaflets in various places. We had a few responses via mail, but people did not appear on the club nights. Hence we were wondering if cost was a factor. We would need to intensify our leaflet distribution again and change the design slightly to advertise the fact that cars are provided.
We have a club website which we will update in the next couple of days. On the leaflets is a QR code which links to that web page so people get more info.
I don't know what else we could do so if anyone has a clever idea.....
@ Martyn....you are always welcome for more fun and laughter this year
Hi Sandra, does your local radio station advertise community events. Or the local newspaper over here has a section for upcoming events . Now ours is done free as it is a community newspaper. Also Windo postings in some relevant shops may help out. Your local cou cil may even have grants for clubs for this sort of thing, If you have a local reporter who could be invited out for an eveni gs festivities to take part , im sure it would create an article and pictures for you.
Just some thoughts that i hope are helpful.
Kudos for the efforts , and i think that you are going in the right direction

Very good ideas Bob!

I know that here in France clubs get financial aid of different sorts from the municipality/region, but not sure that applies in the UK.

I can also share how I heard about slot racing, basically through related activities: as a kid, I saw a demo track at the Chicago Auto Show, and as an adult, again a demo track at the Paris Hobby Show.

In other words, any car/hobby related activiies can be used to inform people who already have a penchant for this stuff. Also, shows like hobby shows are often looking for "animations" (not sure that they're called in English any more...), and may well give you free space if you man a demonstration booth for the length of the show - I think that's what the French Slot Racing Federation did for a few years at the hobby show, but we also had a very dedicated president, ready to use his holiday time for this sort of thing.

It did spur a lot of interest at the time, not sure how many permanent members it attracted. .

We also had an "open house" at our club a few times, with cars available, and races for folks' old Scalextric and Jouef cars. Again, lots of participants, not sure if we got any members out of that!

Thank you guys, certainly food for thought . We will probably have a special event again in the spring, which we could advertise more innovatively.
