Ninco have a purpose designed ball bearing set available for their cars but, of course, Ninco cars have a 2.5mm axle diameter as opposed to the Scalextric (and most others) standard of 3/32".
The problem you're likely to encounter with Scalextric cars in particular is that the wheels are moulded directly on to the knurled axle ends. Once removed they'll never go back on properly again.
My suggestion is to remove the whole rear axle, gear, wheel set-up and replace them with after-market stuff. You can always clip them back in if the changes don't work out.
