Full steam ahead then for the 'Big-G' restoration project
Great to have all in agreement and all willing to help with the work

Current plan is it stands,

- Copper Braiding : I'll get some more prices and will get it ordered in the next few days

- SlotMaster system : Will be order today, got 1 - 2 weeks lead time on that

- Routing Bits : Jim is looking into getting these made and prices

- Router : Chris, are we ok to borrow your router for the work?

- Computer : Plenty of options here with people having spare PC's and Scott mentioned he has a spare monitor. Would be good to hook up 2 monitors, each side of the room so everyone can see times etc. Should be easy enough to clone the screen across 2 monitors with the right cable.

Bit of research to do,

- Braid Adhesive : Anyone have thoughts on the best thing to use?

- Anything Else??? Anything else that anyone can think of.......

Once we have a bit more info and some of the bits we can organise a day/ evening to make a start on stripping the track ready for the work to commence

It was good to see the spirit in the Club last night.. It has been my dream from day one to get to race on that track and now it looks like it may be happening after all...Well done to all.

Lee I have spoken to Sean this morning (before he'd had his breakfast I think) I should have a price soon...

T'was great Ian
Nice one...hope Sean was too upset about the early morning call

One other thing I think we should all consider....raising the weekly subs upto £3.

It's been £2 as long as I've been coming, and an extra pound from everyone each week would cover the extra electric etc that we'll be using on the track and during the work time....

what does everyone think to that?

I have a router, never out of the box, so that makes 2 or a spare.

Prior to starting this work are we happy with the track layout , I only ask as l've herad a few ideas for added/altered sections being voiced, I don't know how serious these were, but better to consider all options now rather than later especially if we are wanting to run events. IMO Its a point & squirt track with less techincal sections than we experience at SIC events.
after seeing the modifications to pendles track, its possible !!!!!

Go Lee GO !!!!!!!

Also like the idea of a CSCRA meeting

Ey Up.

I have seen a braiding tutorial on "Slot Car Illustrated" which uses double sided tape to stick the braid onto the lands.

I am a little concerned about the "under the bridge" section. One big job to cut the track and dismount for 500mm of each lane.

I have had a think about it and reckon I could "cobble-up" a router plane to do the braid lands by hand where the router can't access.

Alternatively, and this is a bit out of left field, we could leave the existing tape under the bridge !!??.
Drill a power point hole at each end of the section, and take braid and tape through and join up under the track.

Any of you out there reading this have any ideas for inaccessible areas ??.

Regarding the braid...I've asked the peeps I contacted to confirm the dimensions of the braid. I think it's 5mm wide x 0.75mm thick, but will confirm once I hear. Thought I better get that before you chaps start making router bits!!!

Chris - how would going from braid to tape affect the running of the car?

Got a few questions to answer for the SlotMaster system....LED positions, lane order, lane dimensions, cable length etc...so must remember a tape measure next week!

Unless Jim - do you have those keys? Could pop to track at the weekend to do the measuring etc.

but good news though, it's all ordered

Just a quick rundown the list;

Let's get the track up and running before we consider any changes to the layout we can always add them later as has been shown across at Pendle's. There are a few members that like it just as it is.

I'm pretty sure we can think of a way to get the underbridge section sorted as Chris suggests.

We actually need to have some braid present before we actually start any routing to ensure we get it exactly right.

Club subs two or three quid still much cheaper than most clubs, Michael your welcome anytime…as is any other Slotracer.

.........................

I think things will run much smoother now that we have benefited from our surprise, anonymous donor, we and he know who he is and we are all very grateful, Thank you from all the TEAM at Gainsborough and Lincoln Slotcar Club AKA G-Slot.

Agree with all that Ian...lets walk before we run and start changing bits of track. It's been one hell of a first day with so much already sorted, but there's still a lot to do.

I can see in the future that we'll change parts of the track, but it's still a good track as is and well suited for other events, if not exactly what we've experienced in the SIC rounds. After we've run a few events and got the interest there, then the development can continue.

There's a few decisions and confirmations we need to make about the SlotMaster set up,

Do we want all lights facing forward as shown on the SlotMaster web page or with F1 lights facing upwards?

What colour LED's do you want?

Need to supply a drawing of dimensions and distance between lanes showing which side the wire coming out, which colour where, which would be lane 1?

Assume 1.5m USB cable length and 1.5m track interface and bridge wire length will be OK?

Let me know your thoughts on the above.....

I would just like to start with a big
to Lee for really seeing this renovation kick off - with his research this last week and the very generous offer - we have a new lease of life coming Big G's way!

I am happy to offer my practical skills, tools and time to the project.

I will look into the router bits; there may be an off the shelf one we can use. I have the Trend catalogue - the daddies of routing. I will check. There is a stockist in Harworth so Chris could pick it up on the way thru one day.? - I will also talk to my local friendly cabinet makers.

One thing regarding Chris' idea of hand routing under the bridge - I dont think it will work so well with the chipboard. To handroute I think you need to be working with the grain of natural wood - like a plane - I think chipboard will just rip and tear?

We ought to do some test routing on scrap chipboard before committing to Big G!

Would be nice to put in a regulated PSU - £200 worth....but that can wait!

There was an issue with light colours which we must address I can't quite recall exactly what it was it was something to with those who are colour blind, lets keep it as simple as possible as much like little G as possible.

Will those wire lengths limit how far from the track the PC will be, as really we'll need it almost where it is now.

Ey Up,

1. The bridge lights should be facing forward, as the rostrum on Big G is raised, and "looking at" the bridge.

2. I think that the current Little G system is OK, with red LED's; and coloured to show top Qually and / or race leader.

3. Cable length of 1.5m is nowhere near long enough. This is a mistake I made with the SM sys for "Little G", in that I reckoned 5m extra cable length was plenty.
Paid extra for that, but in practise it was, and is, tight.

I would say, from the start line to the counter, to allow 6 or maybe 7 metres extra cable.

4. Jim, I had thought about this, you are right, and I reckoned that a brass bodied rebate plane with two pin guides let into the sole plate, could be modded to do the length under the bridge, but you are abso right, MDF is not like natural wood, I know this having worked with antique and contemporary (!!) long-case clocks for over 30 years !!, but we would of course try anything out on blanks before actually committing to the track.

5. Again, Jim you are right, a correctly regulated power supply is a must for us to consider future invite meetings, this will be done.

Between us this will be good !!.

Sorry forgot the bit about a drawing. I can do a CAD drawing showing whatever SM need to know. We can email it over, save a bit of time. I will try to contact moe and see if he is around to open up for me Monday to measure up.

Chris do you have the spare keys or moe? Would be good for me to have these to gain access conveniently over the coming weeks/ months.

Thanks Chris.

Theres a picture of the ideal bridge on the SM website...half way down this page

SlotMaster Bridge with Forward facing lights

The other things is....do we want the PC in the same place as the current counter? I would say no as that is usable set up space for event meetings. I would suggest having the PC over in the corner where Pete has been putting his box (sorry Pete
)

It's nicely out of the way there and one thing I learnt from the Slot.It night we had was trying to get passed people doing their car set up to input the results was a nightmare!!! Most other club I've been too have the timing PC etc well away from the set up tables

Would need more cable though!!!!
