Hey there!

I made a bit of a boo boo today and admitted to my girlfriend how many slot cars I own

It all started when she told me how much she liked a recent pictue of a Fly Viper I sent her. Big mouth went on to tell her I had ten of these (well 14 as of this afternoon
). She was somewhat surprised as she thought I only had about ten cars or so in total. She then had a look at my website and things started to click into place. Then came the quick bit of math at approx. £25 a car and..... well she has been happier.

I hope she doesn't work out how much 22 metres of track and borders cost. Oh and the figures, trees and others bits and pieces.

Now I know of at least one person who sneaks things into the house when his wife is not around and was wondering how everybody else gets around this?

Cheers,

Stupid, stupid, big mouthed slik.

Poor Slik.

I'm afraid there's nothing for it but to get the GF hooked on slots herself. Has she a favorite car? (My daughter is/was partial to Vipers as well, so I offered to get her one to get her interested in slots, but alas, a boyfriend arrived...so her interests were engaged elsewhere.)

Barring that, I suggest a liquidation of assets at pennies on the dollar to blokes who will be happy to help you out, like me...

erm.. I dont quite know how you lot manage to fumble them!

mind you there's always the "I ordered it for Rob" then when they ask oh a new car? it's the old "nah, had that one ages"

It helps to have them in the room while you move them about because then there doesnt seem as many as you can throw them under the desk in draws and under rags etc

After I place an order, I check to see if the postman gets out of his van with any boxes, if he does, I get him as he passes my office window - before he can ring the doorbell.

The wife looks after the accounting so she finds out in the end, but if I can postpone her hitting me over the head then I do

Good thing is when you get a few cars, well people find it hard(er) to notice the latest additions.

Jamies' tips:

Leave them in the car, and sneak them in when other half is in bed.

Prepare for early mornings to "personally" greet postman (scaring him in the process)

Carry in with bag, under coat/laptop etc... leaving comp in car (which then gets nicked...)

Where do you hide the cardboard boxes these things come in? (tip: Buy a Hamster)

I just point out how much the very boring stones and things she buys for the garden cost. None of them are in scale with each other, they weigh so much the handling is woeful and you can't even off load them on e-bay.

Having collected over 100 slot cars, over 90 of them since meeting my wife, I think I can consider myself lucky...

I have probably received at least 20 of those from my better half and my 2 kids as birthday/Xmas/fathers day presents. In fact its my birthday next week so I have to give them a 'wish list' and I'm struggling!!!!!

I figure that there's no way i can hi-jack the postman as he/she arrives after I've left for work so I have to come clean about it if I buy a car myself...

Hi,

Today it is easy because I am single again
but in the past I used to bring them home along with our club order. Our club makes an order to Pendle twice every month and you can allways tell that these cars are for the other club members.

I think that she knew but didn´t really care

She allways thought that this is a hobby of not crown up men. She was right but the attitude was wrong.

Try;

" Made another contribution to our pension fund, dear"

And make sure to show her Ebay auctions like the NSCC Rover Jexy1 posted and add comments like;

" We have 2 of those, only paid 25 quid each, I'm sure the scratches on the roof will polish out, and new bumpers and mirrors are available for buttons" or " If their worth over £300 now just think what it will be when we retire"

In other words, lie, distort the truth, buy chocolate, do anything you can!

Mr Material you and i share that tactic

Women have been doing the same thing to us men folk when they buy clothes ever since we stopped skinning animals foe clothes.

Actually i am looky my wife doesn't mind me buying cars. At least (she thinks) it keeps me out of trouble

I guess we are in a fortunate position of both being in decent jobs and no kids to squander are hard earned

What i say is spend on
and remind her how much that last dress cost when she ask's the awkward question.

Jen doesn't mind, her attitude is that it's my money. She does, however, want to know which are valuable in case anything happens to me :)

She did get upset when I burnt the carpet with a soldering iron though.

I'm with Mr Material on this one.

First and most important - get everything delivered to the office! - someone is always in and wife works 20 miles away.

Pensions - as per Mr Material - it's an investment, oh and by the way we had better increase the contents insurance on the house!

Big sets (like the one i sneaked in yesterday from Hamleys! - massive set - three exclusive minis - £150!!!!) - bought it for the cars - sold the track already dear, didn't really cost anything!

The other trick your missing of course is that your not married! - get married then it's too late for them to complain - they will only spend your spare cash if they can, so get rid of it your self!!!

Funny topic.

I just plea mea culpa.

Luckily I have been self regulating the car purchases to 1 a month and doing o.k. with this policy. sure I've taken a few liberties with the defintion of "month" and "one" but not too bad. At 99 cars, it looks like alot but isn't totally over the top! (and i've been into 1:32 for about 5 years now, add gifts from the family at Christmas and birthday...).

I've also cut way back on mail order and tend to buy off the shelf. Its alot easier to sneak them into the house that way! Call it "under the radar" if you will.

Besides slots are a great family hobby. My girls like them, we've got two Fly 908s currently in the works for a Barbie and Dora the Explorer re-livery. Grandpa enjoys a lap or ten. Cousin Ben comes by more often. Time spent working on the track in the basement is usually done aside the girls who are playing in their adjacent playroom.

Besides its cheaper than Golf, easier to know where I am than say if I were in a Darts league or something, and finally ITS A HECK OF A LOT CHEAPER THAN HER FACE CREAMS, LOTIONS AND ASSORTED OTHER SPA TREATMENTS!!!!!!! (a point which she knows all too well and I reserve to use at my discretion if ever needed!)

Cheers, Ken R

(of course the 100+ HO cars (some rare and valuable) and original MIB Faller Grandstands etc tucked away deep in storage have dropped off the radar!)

Em's pretty good about it. I wouldn't be able to sneak anything past her even if I tried- she knows what i've got and not got, though with a relatively small collection it's not too hard to spot interlopers.

she's on a couple of occasions said something along the lines of "what have you got that for? I got you a car at the weekend" or something, to which I can usually reply, "but these were on sale", or, "i'd already ordered these". though I'll admit that on occasion i've artifically adjusted the price of an item downwards- the proto-slot 908 was a case. she seemed very suprised anyone would pay 20 for just a body- good job she doesn't know how much it really cost...

But actually Em's very supportive of my hobby. as I told the story elsewhere, she was egging me on at milton keynes somewhat, pointing out all the lovely boxed fly limited editions "well rich, you do like 917s a lot, don't you? and GT40s... ooh and there's a steve mcqueen one over here maybe you should buy that one..."

she's also a lot more understanding since we made friends with this guy who also owns a smart- he has a collection of over 200 1/18th diecasts (and not the cheap ones). which makes my shelf-and-a-bit seem a bit half-hearted.

If caught with a new car,

You may use any of the following at your own risk:

" I won it at last weeks race!"

" Wow what a deal! I got all five for the price of one. "

" Look, I won the door prize at the swap meet. "

" Oh, you mean this one? I won it in the club charity raffle. "

" New car? No way, I built it myself. "
