Bizarre US trend

I saw this magazine on the rack the other day and it shocked me. The popularity of larger diameter wheels and low profile tires has been around for a while, taken from racing wheels on touring cars and sports racers. This takes it to a new extreme! These are 80s and 90s full size American cars lifted only to be able to install the gigantic wheels, up to 30" diameter. They are not 4wd, but some have Lambo door kits and other weird mods.

Pete, I saw some of these on Discovery Channel (don't remember which show) about 2 or 3 months ago. It was a quick story on them. They said the mod is apparently worth a small fortune, is based on the opposite of lowriders (sorry, Lowrider!

) and makes the cars almost undriveable - well, duh.... no rocket science degree needed to see that!

Unfortunately, I don't have to buy a magazine to see these cars, there are quite a few in my neihborhood! I was passed by a girl driving an explorer with 22"s last night on the freeway! Problem is they don't reset their speedometer when they put the oversized wheels on so they don't realize they are goin 90mph instead on 65 & they wonder why everybody's driving slow!

Except on extreme examples, as you have shown there it rally does not change the geometry much because American cars especially older ones tooled around on higher side wall tires than most inport cars. As far as the handling goes it's much better than the lowriders with those little bitty wheels & 6" of spacers so they have to worry about clipping curbs everywhere they go! Even the modifications to the suspensions are fairly straightforward, not really any different than what they do for offroad stuff.

Actually most of them do! You would be supprised though, a couple years ago I was looking for a second car & I thought an older large V8 American car might be fun. I saw one on a car lot that looked O.K. & I stopped to see what he wanted for it, I expected $1,200 or $1,500? N0 like $3,500!!!!, I was like holy crap you gotta be kidding!, but 3 days later it was gone!!!!

I don't care as long as they do it on the right lane so that the seriously faster cars can go by those mastodonts. There is no speed limit in the southwest anymore, or seemingly so. When I returned from a slot car race in Arizona a while ago, we were doing 120 and being PASSED by TRUCKS!

As far as those stupid contraptions with 50" wheels, maybe they will replace Big Foot at the top of the mountain of imbecility, but you know what? It beats the heck of being stuck countries where they built Trabants, Volgas and Moskvitchs. And they pollute a LOT less too.

You are thus invited to be a passenger, then a driver, in several period and current American-built cars that will change your mind forever, beginning by a GT350 and ending with a Cadillac CTS. Get your latest M6 rocket pusher and hope that you can keep up.

You can also blow away a VW GTI with a simple and inexpensive Saturn sedan for $8K less. And by blow away, I mean cornering, braking and plain speed.
I just spent 3 days at Willow Springs raceway testing nearly 250 new cars, and the biggest surprice to me was how good some of those new US cars really are. For the old ones, I'd put a Mustang GT350 or a Ford Fairlane "Sport" against any period Ferrari 250GT. Actually I think that Clark and Jack Sears proved the point then anyway.
But I completely agree about the utter stupidity of these neo-gothic recycled vehicles with their 30" wheels and no-profile tires... and that's pretty dangerous too!

Aha!
I accept

I knew it would work one day, now when are we doing this test series?

Actually Herr Evil Dok I was stirring the wooden spoon HOWEVER I would totally disagree with anything claiming the CTS is a good car. Fast maybe but thats about it and yes I have driven one. Sluggish to drive, sloppy suspension and bad build quality were the impression I was left with. Same for the latest Mustang I am afraid.
Not that all non US cars are any better

You would not find me anywhere near a Golf GTI in any guise either

I was not too impressed either, what a pushy dog. However, I'll bench a CTS-V against the best 4-door sedan you can come up with any day... and it ain't no dog as clearly shown in the Speed Challenge races in the US where it cleaned the clock of the entries by Audi, Acura, Chrysler (Viper GTSR) and Porsche (twin-turbo). It may not be as civilized as a S550 as far as its manner, but it sure gets the job done.
As far as old cars, a GT350, Camaro or a Galaxie "Sport" were the class of the field for a while in the UK against the best Europe could offer. Look, I am a Mercedes guy and I am defending US cars here, because their image in Europe is far from reality. The reality is that there are good cars and bad cars EVERYWHERE. Mercedes makes some pretty poor sh*tboxes as well as GM. But GM also makes Vettes, and they are pretty darn nice cars, over-performing Italian jobs costing 5 times the price the name of which begins by an "F".

Hey Swiss,

How's things? Will you be in Bordeaux again next year?

As for the car compares, where have you driven American cars? If it's on our side, please remember that your roads are different so the suspension setup is totally different. Many of your roads are billiard-table smooth (unlike our tank ruts) and twisty-turny (unlike our Roman insired straight lines). Also, remember that our petrol is 87 octane for regular and 93 for premium (unlike your 95 and 98 for super), so engine performance will be different. I would tend to trust a true side-by-side comparison, which Philippe says he just went through (and Philippe has proven he's unbiased, yes?)

HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!

Anyway, I'm a Detroiter who's spent time in the auto industry, and NO self-respecting person would put 22"s, or "dubs", or "donks", on his vehicle. It looks STOOPID!

americans and taste ???????????????

fish n chips w/ mayo.

'nuff said

as to those mechanical freaks

check out the IQ of most of the drivers

although, in the 80's a speed shop around the corner from me dropped a Camaro Z28 body onto a Blazer chassis w/ a lift kit, put a plow & lite rack on it and used it as a professional snowplow. that was pretty cool

Heya Brad,
Already booked my bordello room for Turin, I booked you and Phil into their 'special' in case you were late reserving too

Yes I drove the CTS and Mustang over here on our silica chip, billiard table roads.
I agree a different setup is needed on each side of the pond but that isn't what's offered. We get the same setup as you which is partly why US cars tend to get slated over here.
Speed isn't everything, especially in Switzerland where they are still scared of suffocating at speeds in excess of a snails pace. Handling is alot more important and it is this that is missing in my opinion

What you all need to remember is I like winding you all up over the never ending car issue

You guys are too easy to bait.

Anyway, back to PeteNs original content (sorry Pete!)

Are these actually allowed on the road?
I am having trouble seeing the pics above as real. they look like photoshop joke pics, the second picture really cant be authentic - CAN IT????
