I'd say they are just following the very fine example of the Italian supecar makers who, especially in the 70s, turned out a succession of dross and to hide the dodgy engineering charged so much money for it only rich fools could afford it.
I having had and used a 1975 Ferrari Boxer, I know your are wrong. It was a great car one I would have any day over anything being built in Japan today. It had soul and was the most exciting thing I have ever driven.
It funny because I was only thinking the other day I would like another one.
