I bought a new Scalextric Porsche Boxster on Saturday and had a race on my track with a friend, did about 40 laps then the car seriously slowed down and now it barely chugs around! It's only 5 days old!

Surely this shouldn't happen, do you think I can take it back?

Personally, I would take it back - there should be no problem with doing that.

Sounds like it couldve thrown a winding in the motor, just take it back and explain how little you have used it. You just picked an unlucky motor by the sounds of it...

Welcome to the board Gunter.

I would take the car back and discuss it with your stockist. Any authorised Hornby stockist would be quite happy to discuss this issue. You might receive a free replacement motor instead of a replacement car however.

The same would apply no doubt to any Ninco, Fly, SCX or Carrera car purchased that suffered a similar issue and had not been fiddled with.

The real issue is for the stockist is that many experianced slot car owners start fiddling with their cars as soon as they are purchased, and as soon as you do this then you would loose any right of redress no matter how young the car is.

If you are known to your stockist as a fiddler then your chances of any redress will be limited.

However Gunter I do not believe this is an issue in your case and so the outcome of your discussions will no doubt be to your satisfaction.

I would say that any retailer worth their salt would resolve the situation to your satisfaction.

John P - if the violin playing is as bad as my guitar playing, then the answer is yes!

Been running these for a couple of weeks now without a problem and reckon you should get a replacement motor no problem. Whilst the fiddling point may be valid in some cases I don`t think anyone fiddles to make a car not work

DId you happen to crash it alot at high speed, or even crash it? I had a neighbour bring a mini cooper S to me which he had had about 10 days (was somewhat beaten up) and said the motor had died, well it would, the armature had well reupted into a large mess of wire.
Told them to take it back.. low and behold they said no they wouldnt replace it.

It has crashed a few times, and they do seem to be high speed bashes [although the body work is still crisp] It destroyed my VW Split Screen Pickup in one of the crashes

Yesterday the motor got really hot and it seems to have shorted because when I put another car on the other track they both stop going. I am running both off of 1 power supply.

I'll pop it back up the shop on Saturday and see what they say.

Are replacement engines cheap? I can't find anywhere that sells parts, just complete cars. This one was only £15 though.

If the retailer gives you no joy, Getslotted carry a range of spares as do many other retailers.

I believe Scalextric replacement motors are around the £5 mark.

Of course you should take it back. Consumers have rights, you know! (unless your racing style and mistreatment are the reason it's burnt out!).

Just thought I'd tell ya that the shop took it back fine, and I paid the extra £12 to upgrade to a decide car - the Starsky & Hutch model.

It goes a treat!!!

OK "IW". Now that you have had a quick go with an entry level car and a more expensive premium car, which do you think overall gives you the most satisfaction?

I ask this because it is always interesting to get the newcomers perspective.

Clearly its early days but first impressions?

Tonight I ran the second event this week using the Audi/Porkers in a one make, box standard class. The Juniors ran them on Monday and tonight Stratford upon Avon Round Table. They run well are durable and very fast. Good fun and not just for the beginner or home racer in my opinion and experience. Best of all no bits to fall off

Very interesting that distinction of "premium car" when they both carry the same 35 cent Mabuchi motor

. Just a quick question, did you check the guide/braid on the Boxter to see if you were getting contact? Common problem it is, just curious. By the way, welcome to the Forum and one of the fun pastimes left in the world. It can have it's troubles but overall, it beats a sharp stick in the eye!

The porsche was slightly smaller so got around the banked corners better [exhaust pipe doesn't scrape the track].

I also find that the GT launches itself off the track when going too fast, not too much hassle, but it's more effort to drive than the campervan, which goes full speed all the way around.

Just 2 days ago i had a similar problem with my fresh Auto Art Lamborghini
Countach.. Though this car uses a different way of powering the rear axle,
it just might be the same problem:

I found out that the motor pinion got stuck at the very beginning of the motor
axle.. This made that the pinion got stuck on the motor holder, which in turn
caused the motor to not turn anymore.
I used a flat screwdriver to move the motor pinion a bit further on the motor
axle.

Take a look at the motor axle and the pinion, it could very well be a similar
problem..
