Can we continue to use......... splash screen

2981 Views 38 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  CMOTD
is it just me, or is every screen refresh for others this evening coming up with that really annoying splash "Can we tailor ads......" blah blah blah?

This forum is becoming unusable for me at the moment. Can't see any obvious ways of stopping them, currently.

Hi folks. Is this problem still recurring? This messaging you've been receiving has nothing to do with the move to Google Cloud, it's related to the recent GDPR regulations. So basically, you're being asked to confirm whether you're okay for data to be collected for targeted ads as one measure the site needs to take to be compliant with GDPR regulations. That being said, you should only need to answer this question once, not on every page you land on. For those who have the screen recurring, what might be happening is, your browser setting might be clearing cookies automatically, so the information is not retained. Check your settings to see if that might be the problem. If it's not cookie related, please let us know and we'll take another look.

Cheers,

Erik
It seems to have settled down now, I've not had any messages since I clicked on the 1st one after I opened the page on the tablet earlier this evening.

Ahhhh, peace and quiet settles once more over the shire.

Whatever was done by whoever, thank you.
Being a grumpy git kinda fella with more spare time on my hands than is safe for the wider community I am absolutely having a ball with this GPDA (sic) malarkey and religiously getting the details and saying 'No' to all of it.

I know I can't stop it all and the Man is still tracking my every sneezle but I feel like I'm taking some control. It's about the only good thing I believe the EU has achieved in its long and illustrious.

?

:-D
Yes, still having problems. it's there every time I log in and it seems to make no difference whether I agree, or disagree then accept/submit, it still comes back next time I log in.
Doug, have you enabled or disabled cookies for the site? What platform are you viewing on?
How did you do that? It's stopped. Typical.

If it happens again, I'll try to make notes

Hi

working on Android tab again ok, but Windows phone which uses bing as it's browser means I get the yes no agree thing on every single page....
Windows 7 with IE, Chrome and FF all ok these days. This was the machine that generated the annoyance in the original post - I haven't changed a thing on it other than Microsoft patchday doing it's wizadry.
Splash screen is back again and I don't know why - or why it went away either

Doug, I strongly suspect this is a problem at your end as nobody else is currently complaining. It is difficult to advise as you have provided no details as I requested in my previous post #28 but the most likely cause is clearing history etc on your browser. When you click on 'I agree' a cookie is generated which remembers it and stops the screen appearing again. If that cookie is deleted then the whole thing starts all over again.
Hi

problem started on Android tab and whent away without me doing anything and has stayed away, not so on Windows phone,it started and has never ceased,it appears on every page whether I'm logged in or not..

Wasn't complaining, only commenting but you've pinned the tail correctly on it being 'my problem'. Regular - well frequent anyway - housekeeping on the PC deletes all cookies, so there we go. Stop housekeeping and all will be fine

(Don't think I will though. Just good to know what causes it now

I've got it back on all devices.

When the splash screen first appeared a few weeks ago, I just clicked accept on each device and that was fine. Now it's back on all devices every time I visit SlotForum.

Like Martyn most of my browsing is done either via phone, tablet or work laptop.

Apart from deleting cookies another cause of the splash screen recurring is a change of IP address which happens every time you switch your router off.
a change of IP address which happens every time you switch your router off.
That's only the case with some ISPs, not all. I've used several ISPs over the years. Some provide a dynamic IP address which changes as you mention, but others provide a static IP address which remains the same no matter how many times you disconnect/reconnect your router.
True, but the vast majority of users are on a dynamic IP address. Static ones are not usually provided by the big players by default. You usually have to hunt for the facility and pay extra to obtain one. I am with Plusnet and they hide it behind a door marked "Beware of the Leopard"!
