I am just about to put an SSD chip into this car and I was quite surprised to see this type of drive train as I have never seen it before .....

Is this a recent idea or something that is quite old?

Also, how effective is it compared to the more normal pinion to gear-wheel configuration??

That's quite an old design that Carrera used. I have a Dodge Viper of their's that uses the friction drive system.

Looks like you've got an old Porsche which may be 12 years old. They run very quietly but are not the fastest cars.

The first three Evlution car types come with this kind of transmission:
- Dodge Viper
- Porsche GT1 '97
- Porsche GT1 '98

After that, they changed to a standard inliner setup.
