Hi Jon
Firstly I am surprised that the Slot.It Nissan R390 is not much good as one of our crew has got one and it's very hard to beat in a race against my Carrera Nissan GT500 - even with a 25K motor in it instead of the standard 18K - The only thing he did was to replace the tyres with silicon and as we run Digital he added a Carrera digital chip.
One of the main things with other brand cars are that the guide is smaller in depth than the Carrera ones so they have to be driven into corners a bit slower.
On other brand cars the braids are generally closer together but all you need to do is tease them out a bit so they get good contact.
As my track is always digital I install a Carrera digital chip in non Carrera cars and have no issues running them.
After having so much fun using Digital I see no point in running an analogue track.
This link shows a number of non Carrera cars I have chipped and also some Carrera Evo classic cars that are also chipped but they were never intended to have chips installed.

Hope this helps
Cheers
