I sort of learned to drive in a Panda, I say "sort of" because my instructors car was a Maestro which I did more miles in (now there was a man's car to learn to drive in, the Maestro, no PAS, no ABS, you had to physically lift the entire gearbox to engage reverse and wonderful servo-assisted brakes that meant if you stalled the car trying a hill start you rolled back downhill with no foot brake at all!). The Panda was my Mother's car, 950cc of finest tincan steel that I attempted to get up hills on any given Sunday.
Postives - slab sided so dead easy to park you knew where every corner was at any given time Land Rover style, ran on air, never rusted (yep, surprised us too), sailed through MoTs, I could actually get my double bass in it and have the boot door shut.
Negatives - Dangerously unstable past 60mph, horrible driving position whereby you were almost standing on the pedals Transit van style, glacial performance, brakes with two settings - Off and Locked Up.
For reasons never quite explained (when a perfectly good estate car was available for use) my Mom and Dad drove from the West Midlands to Brittany in it, complete with two weeks worth of luggage and some furniture for their cottage in France. That must have been a epic.
As for a slot car version of it. Nah...... I'll carry on kit-bashing my Ferrari GTO thank you very much!
