ok, so I have just opened the box, put in the batteries, set the magnetstrip under the lane, put the key in the right place. Then I take the car, check that the guide is neatly aligned to one side, put the car down in the lane and.... swish - it drives in full speed bypasses everything and does a great flying exercise beyond the first curve.....

So I cannot make my car LEARN?
Any suggestions - or is my car a 'monday' version?

Help appreciated indeed... getting very frustrated here now...

Thanks but...

Yes I have looked at the resource section, I have also looked at the previous discussion here. Most problems seems to have been AFTER the car has learnt the track. Well my car is going at full speed from the moment it touches the track, no matter what I try to do with it (it seems). Did I miss something in the initial setup? Or is there something wrong with my car?

I know the next paragraph is very basic but it is the simple mans guide to Challenger hopefully:-

The tower has to be on the same side as the lane in which the car is in and should be about 300mm from the magnetic strip with the lights pointing forward. The key to short the lane should be in place. You then make sure the guide on the underside of the car is turned to the right and place the car on the track at an angle about 300mm from the magnetic strip. The car is then released and it creeps forward to the magnetic strip and stops. You then press the top button on the tower and the car then learns the track for two laps. You then press the next button and it will do 20 laps at moderate speed, etc, etc.

Have you got good lane power all the way around the circuit? Take one track section out and make sure you can drive a normal car with a controller from the missing section to the missing section. Remove any crossover curves or anything with a gap in. This should not matter in fact but as a confidence builder its best to have a continious rail and to create a very simple circuit to start with, such as an oval.

The Challenger tips section is recommended reading.

What track are you running Challenger on by the way?

Thanks guys.

The problem is the car does not seem to ever creep.

Do I understand it correct? - When you set the car on the track - it initially creeps toward the magnetstrip? (mine does not creep - it always starts out with full throttle as soon as it is put on the track).

Its probably best if Peter sticks with the standard set up at the moment to get Challenger working for him.

What I would say Inte is that if I put the tower on the wrong side of the track then my Challenger won't work. The tower has to be on the same side as the car for my car to work properly. But thats my tower. Yours may be different.

Cheers

The car should creep very slowly towards the magnetic strip. It is positioned about 300mm from the strip at an angle with the rear pointing to the right and the guide blade located in the slot and then creeps forward by itself. Don't wiggle the rear end as you place the guide in the slot. This will fool the car into going at full speed when the motor is powered up. Simply place the car on the track at an angle and it will creep forward slowly.

This is the point at which the tower is critical so is your tower working? Check the batteries.

ok this is what I have done so far:

1) since the car was always going much too fast initially I changed the power to 9 volts (approx).

2) after this it was possible to do some testing without the car flying of at full speed (I did not want to trash the car before I even got it working right).

3) with the setup I found out the following.
a) when the car is put on the track it always makes a full lap before it stops after the magnet strip, it does this at what seems to be 'full' speed.
after this initial lap the car stops and then I can use the tower.

4) when trying the 'learn' button it goes two laps - also this at what seems to be a rather fast pace (not what I would call 'creeping'). It does two laps and then it stops.

5) when it has done its two 'learning' (?) laps i tested the 'slow' button. It does then start to race lap after lap - but it does not seem to ever slow down before any curve etc.

6) I have now tried this several times and it seems to do exactly the same thing every time I test it. At least it is consistent in its behaviour.

7) I have not tested 'fast' yet...

end of test so far...

peter, your car is broken.

change it for another. You have done nothing wrong, placing it on the track, it should always creep, never go fast. There is no way to make it go fast until it has crawled, unless another infra red device in your house is telling it to go.

To test for that, try covering the infra red sensor (in between the flashing lights on the top) with thick black tape. If it still zooms, it is definitely a faulty car. If it crawls, its either a faulty tower, or something else in your house tricking it.

ok tested the whole thing again. Followed instructions step by step etc. the results are the same as before. It does not crawl - ever. This time I tested everything - also the fast setting. Was too fast and the car deslotted at first curve... (obviously since it does never slow down - at least not that I can see).

Unless anyone has some very good new ideas for me to try out I will have to return the thing...

thanks for all your help anyhow - It seems as if it is not working the way it should - is then broken I suppose...
