Chaparral 2F

The Dapretto Chaparral 2F is now available in the UK. Rather steeply priced at £125 each, though.

On the subject of Chaparral's, pictured below is a 2J which Mark Gussin kindly built for me, based on one of Peter Pre's superb resin kits.

With kind regards,

Russell

Not about to sink another £100+ on a car. That windscreen/roof line looks a little odd....and I'm not sure I'd trust those wing supprts for long.
When's the MRRC version due?
I'll wait for the Top Slot kits, but in the meantime has anyone got any suggestions where to get some decent looking Chaparral magnesium wheels/wheel inserts for my Top Slot 2D and MRRC 2A?
Thanks, John. Yes... the Fly Capri fronts are fine with a coat of dull silver paint, if a little wide, but the rears are way to large for anything of this period. It's an expensive way to buy inserts! But thanks also for the pic of the BWA inserts, Russell. That looks like it might be the way to go, until the new Slot-it Porsche wheels are available.... I just saw pics of the 956 and they look perfect!

What do you think of the roof line on this model, though? I have no experience of this manufacturer, what their reputation is like, etc. But this don't look right to me. I know the 2F cabin was the same as that of the 2D. This doesn't look right for either. It also seems to be suffering from that annoying 'excess rear track syndrome' that all too many firms seem to fall into. Rear tyres projecting outside the bodywork is not kosher under any circumstances. Especially on a £ton+ offering. But the 2J looks fantastic! I hope Top Slot make a good job.

You could have a good game of 'spot the difference' with my 2F. I made it from a Lancer vacform (no- don't run away). I wanted the BOAC winner of course, but the intakes and details changed from race to race, and they're not the ones depicted on the shell so it's all a bit of a moosh-up. One day I'll figure out how to post pictures, then everyone can have a laugh. But it looks the part when it's going fast enough. I did want to make the flipper work, but I remembered the ones we did back in the 60s, when all you could see was the thing shake about a bit. It didn't seem worth the effort. But now I have a mind to convert the MRRC 2A into a flipper wing 2C, with the tall inlet pipes that Maxi-models do in white metal. And those BWA wheels of course. Could look cool. And this time I'd like to see that little flipper flip up at the end of the straight.
Those old Model cars plans are great...thanks again Russell! Do you have a loft full of those, and how much would it cost to get them all reprinted? I remember a great issue which had ALL the current Can-Am colour schemes laid out diagrammatically, in black and white! But what a great resource it was, and what superb posters they would make, blown up a bit! If you want to round up some subscriptions, I'm ready and willing...after Christmas, anyway.

A big up (as the young people say, m'lud) to Jim Hall, anyway. What a man!

Anyone else out there want to join me in nominating Russell Sheldon for an OBE on the new years honours list?
Talking of getting Model Cars off the shelf at the newsagent in the old days.... I used to get mine delivered a week late and a bit tatty. After the paperboy had read it himself. Nothing to do with anything else on this page though. Sorry. I'll leave you all alone for a bit
How often do you have your avatar, if you don't mind me asking?
Hi RichD

Thanks for your help. I tried to follow your instructions again, and THIS happened.......

Funnily enough, that's what was meant to happen. But I think I regret it now.... How do you chaps take such sharp photos? I didn't snip this out of yesterday's Sun, despite appearances.

Should anyone have any further interest and a very strong pair of glasses, the car is a Lancer 2F, with Cheetah power in a home-made brass sheet sidewinder 'rattler' chassis. Fly Porsche wheels were the best I could come up with at the time, but it looks as if they're destined for the spares bin now. Expect my order, BWA. The car has been raced loads, and spent a good deal of time skidding along on it's flipper ( so THAT's why they call it a flipper!). No structural damage incurred so far... and a propos of the discussion about shutlines elsewhere, I picked out a few on this model with 1/64th" pinstripe decals available from Hannants. But before criticising, remember this car cost about ten quid, plus scrap bin bits. Have fun with fault finding! Best suggestions will be incorporated in phase IX mods. Worts suggestions will probably worm their way under my skin and result in eventual complete nervous breakdown. Be gentle with me....it's my first time.

Thanks John.

Actually the car is an incredibly accurate model of the revolutionary lexan bodied 2F with which alt/Jim Hall won one of the parallel universe World Sports Car Championships. It is an interesting matter of fact that since there are an infinite number of alternate, parallel universes, everything is in fact possible and all models are 100% accurate. Except the Dapretto one. And in the parallel universe in which my prototype ran, there is in fact a strange twist in the physical laws which mean that you can run the airfoil upside down and still generate downforce. As I'm sure you noticed.

And I guess a digital camera is the secret, n'est pas?

Now get back to work everyone, and stop wasting your time reading this rubbish.
Thanks Rich, couldn't have done it without you. I've asked Santa for a digital, but I'm afraid I'm just going to get the digit.

Season's greetings, one and all.
